Title: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: WWDWD? on July 01, 2012, 06:16:00 PM This happened last night. It was pretty a good interview. Highlights were Brian having a bit of a sing and talking about making another song (cant remember that it was) as big as Kokomo and Mike Love doing some sort of physical feat of strength at the end.
Trying to find the video of it now. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Ziggy Stardust on July 01, 2012, 06:26:27 PM This happened last night. It was pretty a good interview. Highlights were Brian having a bit of a sing and talking about making another song (cant remember that it was) as big as Kokomo and Mike Love doing some sort of physical feat of strength at the end. Trying to find the video of it now. Oh?! ??? I don't think there is anything to get too excited about there... he was singing what seemed like a traditional song (i think) that he said he wanted to do a version of that could be as big as Kokomo. Kinda like another Shortenin' Bread. I could be wrong. The main thing was that Brian was very present and awake for a moment there singing and clicking away. Mike joined in for a bit too. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Quzi on July 01, 2012, 07:18:05 PM I think it was 'Honeycomb' by Jimmie Rodgers, Brian was extremely enthusiastic about it :lol. I would love if Brian could be given the artistic freedom to go in the studio and do songs like that, he sounded really engaged with the prospect of it and I don't doubt that if he had his way it'd sound a little more inspired and 'Brian Wilson' than some of the other things he's been doing recently. I thought the interview was pretty good, but they definitely gave too much weight to the early fun in the sun image of the boys. Oh, and I must say, it was very satisfying hearing All I Wanna Do being broadcast on national television!

I could totally hear Al singing that song! 8) Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: KittyKat on July 01, 2012, 07:33:22 PM Didn't Brian do a recording of that before with Sping or some other act?
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Ziggy Stardust on July 01, 2012, 07:34:43 PM Now i'm getting excited for another record!

Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: hypehat on July 02, 2012, 02:58:46 AM Brian looks like he's about to have a goshdarn heart attack in that wee backstage bit.
This is a great piece, btw. MIKE LOVE DOES HIS OWN STUNTS! Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Shady on July 02, 2012, 03:10:42 AM Bruce is hilarious
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: STE on July 02, 2012, 03:34:40 AM As I'm always saying, just make sure the interviewer is a pretty girl and Brian is gonna talk! :lol And the end was fantastic! :bow Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: seltaeb1012002 on July 02, 2012, 03:39:01 AM Nice! Thanks for posting. About to check this out
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Slow In Brain on July 02, 2012, 05:39:13 AM Good interview except Al didn't have a chance to speak and no mention of Carl. What Mike did at the end was :o :o :o
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Rocker on July 02, 2012, 07:28:05 AM I think it was 'Honeycomb' by Jimmie Rodgers, Brian was extremely enthusiastic about it Right -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xOkiO1TdX0 I never really liked that song and still don't listen to it very often. Does that mean Brian thinks about doing another 15 Big Ones ? I hope not.... Bruce, from "surfing Doris Days" to "surfing Disney land" :3d Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Autotune on July 02, 2012, 07:36:45 AM Boy, would like to see Mick Jagger try Mike's move in the end. Unless he's too chickenshit to try it.
Re. Honeycomb, I'm all for it. There's a bunch of unearthed -and apparently very cool- BW covers from like 2008-9. If he tries the same with the group, I know I'll buy it. But then, I bought Symphonic Sounds, so what do I know. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: bgas on July 02, 2012, 08:22:52 AM but that was only 12 minutes! where's the other 48?
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Roger Ryan on July 02, 2012, 09:38:50 AM I have to say that Brian's summation of what drug-taking did for/to him was the most succinct, objective and, apparently, honest response I've ever heard him give on the subject.
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: ontor pertawst on July 02, 2012, 09:48:14 AM That was great! Mike doing "The Monkey!"
I would sacrifice goats for an airing of "The Monkey's Uncle" just once. If Annette can't do it, hell, Taylor Mills. Or Brian can sing it to add even more disturbing implications. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: EgoHanger1966 on July 02, 2012, 09:54:08 AM Boy, would like to see Mick Jagger try Mike's move in the end. It's not an obvious song I would think of Brian to do, but I bet his arrangement would be really cool. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Justin on July 02, 2012, 09:56:39 AM Maybe my favorite interview of the tour.
God Bless The Beach Boys. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Shady on July 02, 2012, 11:54:11 AM I've said it before and I'll say it again. Put a beautiful woman in front of Brian and you won't be able to shut him up
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: J.G. Dev on July 02, 2012, 12:19:34 PM He needs to do that move on stage! Rock on Mike :rock
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: seltaeb1012002 on July 02, 2012, 12:47:19 PM Damn, Mike's got old man power. Inspiring stuff. I thought he looked pretty jacked at the Central Park concert.
Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Justin on July 02, 2012, 01:28:04 PM Is it just me or does anyone else find the crowd shots in that live footage to be pretty awful? If those are the kind of crowd reactions they have to work with---I say, keep the cameras OFF the crowd on any live DVD release! Hopefully they can balance out the crowd shots with the full range of fans of different ages and not just the baby boomers in the crowd doing the twist to every song.

Those crowds give a whole new perspective to our endless discussions on setlist. I don't think Brian has ever heard of or cares about AC, as much as i think they are great, Brian is just out of their league. He rather do 'Be My Baby' or more shortening bread rock n'roll, not indie Sunflower music. They need to have buses after the concerts to tote those old folks to the ice floes. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Justin on July 02, 2012, 02:56:51 PM I'm hoping it's just that the 60 Minutes camera guys aren't used to filming a concert since they're mainly a news program. Still though, they could've at least refocused the attention to the different types of fans out in the crowd. It looked like they were playing at a retirement home during the 1pm lunch break after that morning's Bingo game.
Paul McCartney puts out some great concert DVDs because they really capture the emotional connnection between the audience and him on stage. Although the crowd shots can be a little over-bearing and on the generous side...you still walk away knowing just how much Paul's music means to his fans. The same must be done with the Beach Boys. Their music is just as powerful, important and moving to fans--there's no reason why the live document of this tour should unfairly strip away all that emotion. Paul McCartney also uses audience plants for his crowd shots. Attractive young people, especially young women, get free seat upgrades towards the front when he films shows. He's not the only act that does that. That would be creepy if the Beach Boys did that. I'm sure it varies by venue whether they get many young people. Considering they chose Florida to film for one of their TV specials I'd bet the crowd skews old there. The program may have been given footage from that St. Augustine concert. Lots of snowbirds and retired people in a city like St. Augustine. Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: send me a picture and i'll tell you on July 02, 2012, 07:30:05 PM Now how many of you got down on the floor and tried that thing Mike did at the end?
I did. And failed. :old Title: Re: The Beach Boys on 60 Minutes Australia Post by: Doo Dah on July 02, 2012, 08:01:37 PM Great piece. Thanks for the link.
I'm a little uncomfortable with the ageism goin' on around here. When they put it all together on the DVD, it'll be fine. Some quick multi generational interviews - akin to the BWPS DVD. |
