I still listen to several versions of Smile...I listen to The Smile Sessions, Brian Wilson Presents Smile, The Vigotone Smile album and a BWPS Live performance.  I don't consider any of them the definitive Smile, so I enjoy the diversity.

Do you have each of those complied in your own version of Smile? :) I'm sure I can't be the only one that does..

No I've never made my own version. I guess I'm too lazy. I just listen to everyone elses work.

Yes, yes, and yes.

I took the best of the fan mixes, some of my old fan mixes, and, of course, some of the SMiLE Sessions boxed set, and came up with one finished SMiLE. Well, it's not really finished because I keep tinkering with it! But, once I do finish it, every friend, enemy, co-worker, and family member is gonna get a copy - whether they want it or not. :police:

Whenever I want to listen to Smile, I sling on TSS - I got into it with BWPS, so it hits the spot.

The only fan mixes I really feck with nowadays are Seltaeb's amazing SMiLE 3.0 vocal mix, and the Big Grin mix - a perfect concise Smile. No time for hokey fan reconstructions any more, they seem to rub me up the wrong way now. Not inventive enough.


My one's alright, mind - but it's ridiculous! And now super out of date, post TSS - I feel ashamed with the amount of Purple Chick stuff in there....

I've never been a fan of the fan mixes before or after the release of the box set.  Most of them sound exactly like what they purport to be and that is someone's home made brew of what they think the session tapes should represent.  Then after the release of BWPS in 2004, there was a rash of fan mixes which replicated the BWPS track order down to a tee which I found terribly uncreative.  Now that being said there are some fans mixes which are probably still well worth checking out.  For example "Mok's SMiLE" was highly regarded back in the day for good reason as it was a very creative effort on the part of this particular SMiLEologist and the result was a very enjoyable compilation of music. 

Anne Wallace also deserves credit for being the first I believe to combine Brian's "Surf's Up" piano demo with the backing track for the 1st movement of the song.  But in reality accomplishments like this were few and far between.  I'm not trying to put anyone down but a lot of the fan mixes really don't add anything new to the story although I do miss the days of the old SMiLE Shop (pre 2004) where everyone discussed and debated what was what and what fit where.  Those were the days.

I still hold the Purple Chick version near and dear, on account of it being the first one I heard.

Same, as well as the Alternate Brian Wilson version. I bought the five disc set of The Smile Sessions and only tend to listen to the session material instead of the "completed" album.

I'm all about Smile and have been since 1979.  TSS allowed me to create the version I've had in mind for quite some time.  I got the box set for Christmas and within the next three days was finally able to put together the only version I've listened to since.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to decide on a final version of "The Elements" (which is obviously nothing but speculation on my part) or of all songs, "Wind Chimes"!

I just recently got my car back on the road and since I'm currently without an ipod, I burned a few CD's for the road; one being my Smile (as well as my "deluxe edition" of Holland).  After listening to it after a month or so of not, I may add an additional part to "Vega-Tables" but I stand by the rest.  To put it together, I used stuff from everywhere (the 93 box set, TSS, Purple Chick, stuff posted on here, etc.), but only ONE second of BWPS.  

Because of the missing stuff from the 60's, I made a second disc with more finished versions of "CIFOTM", "DYLW", and "IIGS", that were fleshed out with pieces (mainly vocals) from BWPS.  That's also where I put "Gee" and where I'll put one or two alternate mixes of "The Elements" once I decide which version is my final choice for the main disc.

Yeah, I listen to all of those except the Vigatone album, which I haven't heard yet. I agree about "enjoy(ing) the diversity..." Since we'll never know for sure how Smile actually would have sounded (or what the actual track order would have been) had it come out in 1967, we kind of have no choice, in a sense, but to appreciate what we can hear, so that's cool.  :)

I predominantly listen to my own fanmix. Unfortunately, I was lazy when I created it and I keep re-encoding 320mp3 tracks to tinker which means the audio is not as pristine as it could be. One day I'll source lossless components and tackle this beast properly and you'll all have your minds blown  :hat

so i just checked out smile ad 4.0 mix and i'm blown away :) i wish i could find that dude who mixed it and shake his hand!
the way he did citfotm is perfect..with the extra harmonies on the chorus!!!

I mostly listen to TSS. BWPS I primarily use as context to hear how the incomplete songs on TSS would sound like with completed vocals. Just about the only fan mixes I listen to now and days are The Completed Smile, with Jacob Borshard filling in the missing vocal bits from BWPS onto TSS, and some snippets here and there from Purple Chick. I kind of prefer the Ann Wallace mix of Surf's Up to TSS's version, although I like both plenty.

Some of the best fan mixes can be found here on this site, if you use the search feature. The Completed Smile was posted here by Jacob a while back. There used to be a thread dedicated exclusively to posting fan mixes (I think it was called "bring it on, Smile fan mixers" or something like that). I'm sure Google can help you find stuff like Purple Chick (which is kind of outdated now that TSS is out) or Mok's Smile fan mix.

That's one of Brian's vocals extracted from Our Prayer, time and pitch shifted to create a melody. Then I used the same bit to create a harmony.

Nice to see SMiLE A.D. getting some love a few months down the line.

Shoutout to JMZ who did an amazing job pre-TSS and actually already executed some of the ideas I did (such as the Wonderful vocals on Look, stereo Cabinessence, etc). Hadn't heard it until recently, but I really love the vibe of that mix.

I actually combined elements of different SMiLE AD mixes into one mix. I like certain things from each one. Although I lost all of them in a hard drive wipe, I still have that mix of my favorite stuff you did and it still blows me away. Looking forward to any new mixes of Beach Boys material you do, it's great to have someone with so much talent and love for the music sharing his gift with fellow fans. Rock on!

i love that harmony so much :) i just dislike how it sounds like too much going on in "i love to say dada" it sounds too complicated smh...but the mix for look/holidays are perfect!

See what you mean about that Vegetables remix - love that fade! That's one of the really beautiful, wonderful things about SMiLE, it's like the gift that keeps on giving! Surely no other album in history has been - and continues to be - subjected to so many different interpretations.

Yup. Personally, I thought the live version Brian did on that first tour had the most natural progression into the song proper.

Out of the album version and the alternate mix I just posted, which do you prefer?

I actually prefer the album version. I don't like the Desper-style instrumental opening or the interlude. I get it, it's an alternate way of hearing the song, but it robs the song of momentum and doesn't add anything that wasn't already there. It's cool that people do this kind of thing, because it means that BBs music inspires others to explore what can be done with music as well. But this one just doesn't do anything for me, and I actually consider the Surf's Up mix to be un-improvable.

Nicceeeeeeee!!! :) Keep up the good work I already have two of your mixes(Look & Holidays) on my ipod.. Can you do one more mix of "i love to say dada" just like the tss version(same intro same everything) but with the harmony I said i loved oooohhhh ha ha ha haaaaaaa..at  :20 -37 ? the one thing I wish you changed in your mix was the intro of cool water...if it started like the tss version it would be perfect..(imo even better than the 2004 version)
Also on "Holidays" you should've added the vocal part of the 2004 version that goes

That would go with the version you did as well plus so far no one has done it yet..It's genius..I think your version of holidays is slower than the 2004 version but you change the speed of it and make it fit in there somehow..

Hey man, Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you found some elements of my SMiLE mixes that you enjoyed. And as much as I love your enthusiasm and cool ideas... I'm actually content with what I did at the time, and as of right now my SMiLE fan mixing days are over. Working on too much other stuff at the moment to make custom mixes for you, sorry.

Not to mention all of the pieces are scattered across various hard drives since I got my new computer, and it would be a complete hassle to locate and/or cut up and edit everything again.

If in the future I get the time and enthusiasm to create a new SMiLE mix, I might use the Holidays lyrics idea, but realistically I wouldn't count on it happening through me, if ever, any time soon.

In the meantime, you should start throwing together your own mix. That's where the fun lies ;D

well out of all the mixes i heard yours had to be the best I've heard yet....Brian Wilson would be proud man!..and I would love to do that but i don't know what program to use or where to get any of the vocals or how to creating harmonies with it like you did :/

Google is your friend, brother. You can do some pretty robust things with software that's free or minimally expensive. As far as vocals and backing tracks, the stuff's out there. Quite a lot can be done using just what's on TSS.

I'm definitely going to have to do my research now and see what I come across :) and yes time to hit the lab and experiment lol

The only fan mixes of Smile I ever listened to was Mok's Smile and Purple Chick's Smile and that was only because no 'complete' Beach Boys version existed, since The Smile Sessions came out I really don't see the need or point in Smile fan mixes but each to their own.
