Title: What Love You song should be added to the setlist?
Post by: stack-o-tracks on June 23, 2012, 08:23:14 PM
They're going to have to add one eventually.

I vote for Johnny Carson and Ding Dang.

Honkin' Down The Highway would probably make the most sense in the context of the show.

How about giving Brian a shot at "The Night Was So Young"?

The Night Was So Young or I'll Bet He's Nice

"Let Us Go On This Way"
"Good Time"
"Ding Dang"
"Honkin Down The Highway"
"The Night Was So Young"
"Airplane"

Brian has played The Night Was So Young, so that would be no problem.

I'd prefer I'll Bet He's Nice complete with Mike's hoots of approval during the bridge... like the demo version.
When the song is over Mike can announce: "SH!T. That is a motherf*cker!"

It'd be pretty cool to see Bruce wail "WELL IT'S YOUUUUUUUUUUUU" as well. I reckon he'd nail that.

Honkin' would be the logical one since it's on Al's album down at the merch stand.

"Let Us Go On This Way" would probably sound amazing live with the vocal blend they have these days. "The Night Was So Young" is the best song on the album, so that would be amazing, even without Carl to do the chorus.

For my money, though, I'd want to see "Roller Skating Child" with Brian on bass doing that pelvic thrust thing he did back in the day.

Airplane, definitely.

or Johnny Carson. but they'd never play Johnny Carson. they have played Airplane.

Honkin' down the highway

The harmonies on "The nigt was so young" would be killer though. And also "I'll bet he's nice"

The Night Was So Young is the only song that has a chance of being added to the setlist, I'll Bet He's Nice would be too difficult to pull off.

Brian would do a killer version of "The Night Was So Young" - wish there was a realistic chance of them doing it but I won't hold my breath.

I thought Mike said that after Brian played "I'll Bet He's Nice". Could be wrong though (should listen to those demo's again)

If Brian goes solo again, he should do a Love You tour! The remaining concert should be arranged with lots of synth/moog heavy arrangements. I would include Sweet Mountain and Mt Vernon & Fairway!

Actual Chance of Being Done (in order of possibility, keeping in mind Mike's in charge of this):
1) "Honkin' Down The Highway" - on Al's album, if Al wanted to give up "Cottonfields"
2) "Rollerskating Child" - could see Mike agreeing to do it if they cut a post '67 song (that's not Kokomo)
3) "Let Us Go On This Way" - could be cool to hear Brian singing this. Also, was co-written by Mike, so maybe.

Would be cool to hear live:

1) "The Night Was So Young" - they could kill this one!
2) "Ding Dang" - that would be a crazy song to stick randomly in the middle of the second half of the set
3) "Johnny Carson" - maybe they could change the lyrics to "Jimmy Fallon" if they ever go back on his show
4) "I'll Bet He's Nice" - would be cool to hear this around the "Pet Sounds" songs, done in that style.

I would shell out V.I.P. type money to see Brian perform one Love You song, "Roller Skating Child", but under the following conditions: He wear shorts, strap on the bass, and do his "hula hoop" dance!

I said the same thing. Absolutely agree.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing him revisit a song or two from that whole mid-late 70s era. I was stoked to see "It's OK" in the setlist on and off. How about a little "Had to Phone Ya"!

This!

Frankly, I'd be in heaven if they did some kind of tour re-evaluating their whole 70s output. I mean, they're basically ALL deep cuts, but Jesus, they're rewarding songs. So much variety.

I change my vote to Honkin' Down The Highway. It's a good amphitheater song. And they're playing a lot of those!!!! I don't even care if I don't get to see it in person if there's footage of it existing someplace on the internet.

At Christmas they might give Child of Winter & The Man with All the Toys - my favorite songs of their Christmas album - a try. Encore - Winter Symphony and Santa's Got An Airplane. Why not?

Why wait? I seem to remember Brian doing summer gigs the year he released What I Really Want for Christmas, and he just sort of said, "Well, it's summer, but I released a Christmas album this year, so we're doing a Christmas song anyway". ;)

If Brian does another solo tour, he should do the entire Brian Wilson 1988 album live. Ever since he started touring on his own I've been waiting for live versions of Melt Away, Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long, and especially Rio Grande. Then follow that up with a BW/VDP live OCA tour.

This rules. Brian's totally unhinged vocals with Mike's calm lead with flute. Good sh*t.

Well I think Let Us Go On This Way, Solar System, I'll Bet He's Nice, or The Night Was So Young SHOULD be added. But one i'd like to see added (even though it wouldn't be appropriate or easy or really even possible without Marilyn) is Let's Put Our Hearts Together. That's my favorite song on the entire album.

Honkin' Down The Highway is a great song when it's done live. They could throw it in the second set and it would be a real highlight of the show. The Night Was So Young could be really great too. Brian and Al could trade between verse and chorus. Andrew G Doe needs to be a special guest artist for at least one show, to sing Solar System.  ;D In all sincerity, he really does do an awesome job on the song.  8)

"Roller Skating Child" - Ridiculous lyrics but judging by the live clip I've seen of this from 77', It would kill live. Could you imagine 2012 Brian doing the ROLLLLLLERRR SKAAAATINNNG CHILLDD tag?!

"Honkin' Down The Highway" - Al can still sing this so effing good. I don't understand why they won't do this. I yelled this song out in Pittsburgh and Al acknowledged it with a mumbled "Oh yeah..". Dust off the Moog Taurus for this one.

"The Night Was So Young" - This is a beautiful tune and Brian could sing this easily. Dave doing those guitar licks in the verse.

and/or

"I'll Bet He's Nice" - Quirky as hell but it really encompasses all the things of Brian's writing at this time. Bruce doing the "Well it's yooooou" at the end. I wish.

Actually, I don't see them doing any of these anytime soon. Maybe HDTH just because Al has been doing it for years with his own group. If Brian goes solo I'd love a LY tour  ;D

Due to this thread and the combining albums thread, I've been listening a lot to Love You. And, my vote now has to go with "Johnny Carson".It would be so off the wall and so much FUN!

I can picture Mike having a blast (tongue-in-cheek) with the lead vocal, "He sits behind his microphone...", and then the group answering him, "John-ny Car-son". I can see Brian playing those piano chords, and Cowsill pounding the drums and cymbal, and everyone on stage singing/laughing, "Don't you think he's such a natural guy, the way he kept it up could make you cryyyyyyyy....", and then Bruce getting everybody to clap along to "Who's the man that we admire...Johnny Carson is a real live wire...". It could be classic, might even get a standing ovation!

Thanks for the info! I'm only a 1-year-and-something fan of the BBs and have little knowledge regarding what they performed in concerts - together or individually. So that's interesting to read about it.

This is just one show at that time in which he played "Little st. Nick":

I did a cover of that song for my exgirlfriend (her name wasn't mona but i loved the simple song with the catchy melody, and of course the lyrics! so i just changed the name) it's a lovely song, and the fact Dennis sings the song is even cooler!
