Not strictly. It's Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and David Marks of the Beach Boys saluting NASCAR. A strange release, entirely dreadful but strangely listenable if you're in the right sort of mood.

This is NOT an entirely dreadful album, as a Beach Boy detractor and possible Mike Love bigot stated.

It's very listenable and as rewarding an experience as any 'recent' Beach Boys product.  It does rock, which is more than can be said for the current album.

Just listen to that GTO clip originally posted. It in fact rocks in no way whatsoever.  The drums sound like they're from 1985 instead of 1998 and the vocals are terribly mixed/processed...it's a mess.

It sounds really dreadful.

It's too metallic-sounding. But there's dignity and pride to Mike's vocals. Specially the "shut you down" part.

Mike sounds great here, though. Almost the same as he did on songs like "409". Impressive.

Very similar to Al's PT Cruiser as well, which I kinda liked (prefer it to Drivin' of his album).

Ballad of Ole Betsy on the Nascar album is cool, because Mike sings it.

I have the cd and not too impressed but this song and GTO are the only two good songs on it IMO...and GTO is only decent because it was never recorded by them in the past like the other songs on the disc...

I don't know what's dreadful about it. It's a fun little early 60s style song. I prefer PS and post PS Beach Boys, but even so, this is an enjoyable if throwaway rock and roll song.

Nah I was talking about the record as a whole. Little GTO is probably the highlight and as someone else stated that's only cos it's a song they'd never recorded before and as you say it is a fun song.

strange times on Smiley Smile when people believe this piece of crap is art that needs to be listened to.

If anything it shows just how great Mike and Brian's voices were back in the day. Like a lot of BB soundalike songs from that time the lead sounds really dated and the falsetto never seams to soar in quite the same way Brian's did. If you listen to Mike's leads on stuff like I Get Around it still sounds really fresh and vibrant even today.

I am not a Mike Love bigot, like so many here, but in all honesty, to me, his voice sounds congested and weak. He gets there, but I wouldn't call it vibrant.
