Title: Striped Shirts
Post by: Moon Dawg on June 18, 2012, 03:48:55 PM
Anyone a fan of the striped shirts?
When did The Beach Boys first don the stripes? 1963 or 64?
Should they have stopped wearing them sometime in 1965?
Did the long sleeved striped shirts of 1966-67 w/ white pants look a bit hipper than the short sleeve model? Or were both hideous?
Was the European tour of May 1967 the last hurrah for the striped shirts?
What's your favorite/least favorite wardrobe era?

I'd say they held on a little too long with it, but I'm guessing they dropped the sychronized stagewear roughly on par with all the other bands who were doing it.  It'd be interesting to compare & contrast.  The Beatles changed their outfits year to year but still had matching outfits when they quit touring.  The switchover to street clothes or hippie fashion seems like a post-Monterey, post-Hendrix thing.

1967 was far from the last hurrah of the striped shirts because Mike was wearing one (long sleeve) Friday night in Maryland and as I recall Bruce wore one too. But that may have been because their usual garb was in the wash...they'd worn the usual shirts that morning in Central Park.

I loved and still love the surfer shirts. In 1965 my mom bought me a red one and a blue one. I think that was the coolest look.

I don't think I've ever seen the Beach Boys wearing 'surfer shirts' on stage. Brian wore a black one on the 'All Summer Long' photo shoot. And he also wore a red and yellow surfer shirt when they sang 'California Girls' on the Jack Benny show. But as a group, I don't recall any 'surfer shirts'.

Candy striped shirts (ala: Kingston Trio) are not surfer shirts, of course.

But to answer the initial question. yes, I like them Striped Shirts. Very practical. High visibility, but not distracting.

(hawaiian shirts are for barneys)

Hell yes I loved the striped shirts, and  what's up with "(hawaiian shirts are for barneys)" That's all I wear . Wore a BB Hawaiian shirt to the Meet and Greet made by one of MLs ex's and he thought it was pretty cool.

Well, that is special. How about a picture?

I thjought the white suits were the bomb; wish they were wearing them on this tour, or, really, any outfits( for the five of them)  to make them stand apart from the backing band.

That's an interesting idea. The white suits were interesting. Striped shirts today would be a bit cliche. The Pendleton shirts would be way too hot (trust me, I have some).

But it looks like their current 'uniform' is really gaudy printed shirts untucked. I'll accept that as a way of conforming, yet being individualistic.

No accounting for taste. Al Jardine often wears really awful clothing, and has for years. Carl and Dennis really were the only Beach Boys with what I'd call great taste in threads. Brian had his dad and Marilyn to help, but on his own...? scary.

Say what you will about Murry; he knew about presentation.

Of course matching guitars and amps and striped shirts seem hopelessly dated and corny.
That is, unless you follow the current crop of surf-rock bands who aren't afraid to get white levis and surfer shirts going. But white levis and surfer shirst are clothes for young men, not seniors.

Regarding those shirts, it appears it's also style to have the sleeves several inches too long, so you have to fold them up, only to reveal a contrasting print!

I say they wear the classic striped shirts one more time. (just have them be cut baggy like hawaiian shirts.)
