The Byrds - Farther Along

For me, it was real hard when McGuinn decided to disband the Clarence White era of the Byrds.  They made a bunch of really great records, some of them not very well known.  Farther Along has Clarence singing the title tune as well as a beautiful weeper, Bugler.

"Dry your eyes and stand up straight, Bugler's got a place at the Pearly Gates, say goodbye, oh say goodbye....."

That was a gosh darn fine band McGuinn/White/Gene Parsons and John York or Skip Battin.

2nd for "LA Woman."  Also "The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus", which was essentially the last album by the original lineup of Spirit, though many other LPs came out under that moniker through the years.  And this doesn't quite count, but the half-LP for Otis Redding (other side Jimi Hendrix) "Live at Monterrey".  And does "Fresh" count for Sly and the Family Stone?

Oh, and shoot, the first AND last album by the Sex Pistols -- "Never Mind the Bollocks"!

LA Woman is my 2nd favorite Doors LP, after Morrison Hotel.  I really dug where they were going in the end; kinda paralleled the Stones with their blusier, more "American" LPs of that period.  Would have loved to see where they would have gone.  And I actually like "Other Voices" and "Full Circle"!  What can I say....

You can argue "Cry of Love" was Hendrix's last album proper, and its a goodun.

Syd Barrett - Barrett

Apart from a BBC radio session in February 1971, and an aborted attempt at recording new material in August 1974, this is Syd Barrett's last statement as recording artist, and a fine one it is too.

some groups just don't quit and keep releasing shitty music smh

Wow! I havent thought about Material Issue in ages. International Pop Overthrow was in heavy rotation in high school. I need to dig that disc out of the vault. Tragic story about their lead singer....

The last album released by Material Issue before Jim Ellison's death was FREAK CITY SOUNDTRACK which, for me, is their best album - about as good as power pop/rock gets. TELECOMMANDO AMERICANO is a collection of fairly polished demos recorded  several months before Ellison's suicide. Not as good as FREAK CITY (nor IPO), but a collection strong enough to confirm the band was still viable if unable to get a decent record deal.

"The Division Bell" by Pink Floyd is a good one, so is "Mystery Girl" by Roy Orbison. And there's "Abbey Road" of course.

But my very favorite? "Innuendo" by Queen (last album with Freddie alive). Solid album with great songs, the title track being possibly one of the best pieces of music ever made.

Damn straight! Nick's Smiley Smile, minus the joy and goofiness.

More love for Pink Moon here. I've shed the odd tear here and there whilst listening to it. I like the Smiley Smile comparison since the album doesn't feel like a natural progression from the first two; very minimalist and unadorned. Love it.

The only other ones I can really name are:
Synchronicity - The Police
Foot of the Mountain - a-ha
American IV - Johnny Cash (in his lifetime)

I second the Amy Winehouse, Smiths, VU Loaded, and Johnny Cash suggestions. Beatles is a good, if obvious choice. One of my all time favorites is the Zombies Odessey and Oracle. Talk about going out with a bang--a huge hit with "Time of the Season" plus an album full of AMAZING songs. I think it's admirable that they moved on despite having the biggest hit of their career.

This is a tough category since most acts don't know when to quit when they're ahead, but I came  up a few good ones:

The Beatles- Abbey Road (obvious)
The Style Council- Confessions Of A Pop Group
Pizzicato Five- Ca et la du Japon (Here and There In Japan)
Combustible Edison- The Impossible World

Yeah...but 'Oddessy' was released in 1967 and 'Breath In' was released in 2012 (w/o Paul--R.I.P.) so I think it's kinda goofy to include recent albums by 'revived' 60s bands in this thread. 'Global' is a great record too...but it is also something of a "latter-day" revival album that's missing some crucial Cowsill input. Blue Cheer additionally hit the revival circuit in the 80s & 90s with either Paul, Dickie or both recording and touring with various hack guitarists, but I don't believe that such enterprises square up with the original intent of this thread.
