'Across The Border' by ELO completely rips off Heroes & Villains. Give it a listen and see.

Also, 'It's Not The End Of The World?' by the Super Furry Animals steals the melody from Forever during the verses.

Related to this one would be:

"Forever" by Roy Wood (heavy BB influence along with some Neil Sedaka)

"Oh What A Shame" by Roy Wood (play that one after Heroes & Villains- definite influence there)

"The Way Life's Meant to Be" by ELO (play that one after "Oh What A Shame" and note similarities to that one, H&V, and it borrows the "Be My Baby" rhythm)

I agree re all those. However, Across The Border doesn't just have a slight notciable influence, it's just exactly the same tune! Jeff Lyne is a thieving toerag!

"Shannon" by Henry Gross

Every time I hear "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" by Paul McCartney I think of The Beach Boys. Any of you Sir Paul diehards out there know if there was any influence ever mentioned?

well... it's not exactly the same tune. the beginning of the verses in Across the Border is pretty similar to the verses in Heroes, but there's a lot more to Across the Border than just that. also, I've heard similar melodies in other songs, too. it's just a typical southwestern sort of theme.

REM's "At My Most Beautiful" is probably my favorite Beach Boy's influenced song. It sounds like it could've been on Pet Sounds, Love You, or BW88

I met Paul Williams the other night at Cinefamily and he mentioned loving the Beach Boys... certainly his little tribute to them from "The Phantom of the Paradise" pretty much nails the formula:

As a Tears for Fears afficianado I can tell you (and so could anyone really, the title's pretty obvious) that "Brian Wilson Said" is indeed a tribute to Brian Wilson (*gasp*) taking on a similar approach to "Jackie Wilson Said" by Van Morrison. It's a great song, a very homely and spacey feel, the rest of the "Elemental" album has a similar vibe.

Glad you agree and decided to check out some Van the Man. Sorry if I came across as a bit of a jerk in my original post, wasn't my intention.

Definitely Moondance and Astral Weeks, the former is more accessible and R&B/Poppy and the latter is a powerhouse of raw emotion. "Into the Mystic" from Moondance is easily one of my favourite songs ever. Those two albums are a gateway to the rest of the discography IMO but I'm sure there's others here who know more about Van than I do so it'd be interesting to see what they say (search out or make a thread in the General Music section for best results  :-D )

I second those suggestions. Moondance is the perfect album for capturing the best of what people typically think of as Van Morrison's sound. Astral Weeks does not but it probably profoundly affected me in a postive way as much as any album ever could.

Lindsey Buckingham, something of a "genius" in his own right, borrowed a ton from Brian and the Beach Boys.

Just two examples: "Trouble"

and
"Surrender the Rain" off Out of the Cradle
