Title: Re: TWGMTR Debuts at No 15 on UK Album Chart Post by: SamMcK on June 10, 2012, 11:04:52 AM Not bad, it would have charted a lot higher if it actually got promoted though.

Sorry but in my opinion the album has seen a fair amount of promo here in the UK , certainly most since 15 Big Ones IMHO 1) Nearly every major newspaper has done a review 2) Radio 2 have been playing the single on a regular basis 3) Radio 2 Album of the week Etc etc I call that promotion I have even had quite a few mates ( in the small Town where I live ) tell me that they have heard that the BB's have a new album coming out , and they are not even fans Title: Re: TWGMTR Debuts at No 15 on UK Album Chart Post by: Ziggy Stardust on June 10, 2012, 11:26:37 AM Let's celebrate this, guys :

Title: Re: TWGMTR Debuts at No 15 on UK Album Chart Post by: absinthe_boy on June 10, 2012, 01:37:35 PM The album has not received much in the way of promotion.
I do not count press reviews as promotion. The mainstream press and music press here in the UK always review anything Brian or BB related anyway. And bear in mind some of the reviews of TWGMTR have not been positive. I am thinking of paid promotion, paid for by the vested interests (record company, management, Mike Love's Lawsuit Fund). Have you seen an advert? A TV spot? A promotional event involving supermarkets or HMV or Virgin Megastore? Nope. Nothing. Not even a phoned-in interview on The One Show. Yes Radio 2 had the title track as single of the week but I only heard it once. No doubt it got more play than that, but it wasn't enough to make the single even crack the top 100. What we have is the fact that there are sufficient Brits who love the Beach Boys enough to keep themselves aware of what's going on, and go out and buy a CD. Debuting at 15 really is good, and as Andrew says the highest chart position achieved by a non-archival Beach Boys release since Surf's Up...indeed it equals Surf's Up. So it ties with Surf's Up....we have to go back to 20/20 in 1969 for an album of new BB material that betters TWGMTR's chart placing in the UK. Pretty impressive stuff. No doubt it got more play than that, but it wasn't enough to make the single even crack the top 100. I heard it twice, in a total of four hours' radio listening last week. And my dad (not a fan, but listens to Radio 2 in the car a lot) phoned me up to say how he'd been hearing it a lot and it had grown on him. But Radio 2 listeners don't buy digital downloads, so it's hardly surprising that the single didn't chart. They seem to have gone out and bought the album though. Reviews ARE part of the promo process - review copies have to be sent out, review streams organised etc. Also the major features in many of the mags and papers (Sunday Times, Mojo etc) don't usually come about on an editor's whim - the record company will have flown the journos out to The USA and hosted them. Given though that the band hasn't toured here yet or done any TV interviews, they've notched up a good chart position. Hopefully September's activity will give it a second burst of life. Title: Re: TWGMTR Debuts at No 15 on UK Album Chart Post by: CarlTheVoice on June 11, 2012, 12:30:40 PM I don't listen to Radio 2 so that means I missed all the promo here. Apart from seeing the CD on the shelves and one review I have seen nothing else. A quick TV/radio advert or even tagging the new album on the VW advert would have covered the majority of the UK and opened it up to non-Beach Boys fans.
If they create some noise about the gig and spread some of the good news from the US charts surely the public will listen? |
