"Pet Sounds" and/or "SMiLE" in their entirety? 

Given the warm reception the reunion tour has gotten, it's reasonable to think that perhaps this might not be the final Beach Boys tour inclusive of all the band members.  I'm wondering if they might consider giving one of those two records a go in their entirety maybe in a one night only special event type setting?  Thoughts?

Pet Sounds - 40% chance they would.

SMiLE - 10% chance they would but only after they do Pet Sounds first.  So in a word..no?

Hope so, but Mike Love isn't one to perform pet sounds or SMiLE.

Could they?

Yes, of course. They would need some strings and horns for Smile but there`s no reason why these musicians couldn`t play those songs.

Would they?

No. The reason Brian played them is because his management new it would sell tickets and now that he`s done it that novelty has gone. The ticket-buying public wouldn`t be that interested so neither would Mike.

I doubt they will, because it would be a bad idea.  Pet Sounds & Smile are largely "Brian" dependent, and he's already done them.  They'd make much more money doing either new material or travelling jukebox stuff.  


Now I would like to see Brian & Mike do "I'm Waiting For the Day" or something.  HELL YEAH

I don't know...do you think Brian Wilson could become a popular solo performer, and record and perform Smile, not to mention a string of solo CDs', and Dennis Wilson have a reissue of the year in Rolling Stone and Mojo, and a top 20 CD in the UK, and the Beach Boys release a Smile sessions box with a completed Smile LP edit which is also a reissue of the year in Rolling Stone, and the Beach Boys reunite for a wildly successful world tour and record and release a hit album of new material produced by Brian which becomes their highest charting debut of their career and highest charting LP of new material since 1965? I'll never say never again.

I don't think they'd do SMiLE, simply because I don't think very many of them, including Brian, would WANT to.

Now, Pet Sounds is different. I'm not holding out much hope for Brian to be touring with The Beach Boys after this reunion tour. But, because Brian calls the shots as to if and when The Beach Boys are reuniting, if - IF - he would ever want to do some shows with the guys again, I could see him wanting to do something other than a "hits" show (been there, done that), and could be inspired to resurrect old Pet Sounds.

I think the chance would be much, much, much, much higher that he'd want to do a new album live.  Think about his Modus Oporandi, he does that all the time.  He did Pet Sounds live.  He did Smile live.  He did TLOS live... He did Gerswin Live, and I think he did the Disney album live as well! 

It's completely possible, and I'd say it's HIGHLY PROBABLE that in the future Brian will write, produce, and then tour with the Beach Boys a new concept album ala Smile, or TLOS.

In one of the pre-tour interviews, I remember Brian being asked if they would play SMiLE because of the success of the recent box set, and he said no way, he wouldn't want to do that. Then Mike said something like, "well, we should at least do 'Heroes and Villains', Brian", and Brian clarified that he wouldn't want to play the whole album. As for Pet Sounds, frankly they'd need to reassign the songs, or you'd end up with Brian singing, what, seven of the songs, at least. More, if he did all of Carl's parts, with Al doing WIBN, part of "I Know There's an Answer", and Mike doing maybe a verse here and there and then "Here Today"? And what would the Boys be doing during the two instrumentals? I don't think Brian would even want to ATTEMPT "Don't Talk" given how much of the higher notes he's delegated to Jeff over the last five years. If he doesn't want to try singing WIBN live anymore, I doubt he'd try "Don't Talk". So I think the real reason why not to do that album straight through would be how little of the rest of the band would be on there.

Bruce actually wanted the band to do Pet Sounds live in the late 90s, so I could see it happening.

I hope they tour back-catalogue albums only once they've exhausted their ability to make new albums. On current form, I can't see them getting around to it!   ;D

Unless they chose totally arbitrary albums to perform in full. Shut Down, Vol. 2 for example.

My vote goes to The Beach Boys Perform Summer in Paradise Live in full tour. Brian takes Carl's vocal parts  ;D .

Don't forget KTSA and LA light concert with the full HCTN.

If they were 60 years old instead of 70, I could imagine a Pet Sounds tour of small venues to capitalize on the waves of critical acclaim its gotten in the past couple of decades. But, at this age, IF they decide to do another tour it would almost certainly be the last and I don't think they would want to end their career with a handful of intimate engagement Pet Sounds gigs.

But who knows. We're under four years away from the 50th anniversary of the album now....

Mike has performed on at least six songs from Pet Sounds in concert over the years, three of which are still concert staples. Wouldn't take much for him to add the other five.  But if you mean the regular BB touring band, don't look for it anytime soon. And what would be the point?
