I notice that TWGMTR made it into the Target Sunday circular ad (with the CD priced at a dirt-cheap $7.99).   That should help spur sales a bit on Tuesday.

TWGMTR is all the way down at 20 on the Amazon UK bestsellers list currently, which is disapointing to say the least. Still I don't seem to recall ANY promotion whatsoever for the UK. (Not counting the recently announced Wembley Concert)

This is really cool.  I think they'll definately be top 5, and hearing that they're in the Target circular is really cool.  If it made it into that ad,.... that means that Target is treating it as something that they'll stock a lot of, you know what I mean?  They won't just have 3 in each store if they're advertising it in the circular, they must have quite a few of them in each store if they're pushing it like that.  Hell yeah!

Why isn't this being promoted much in the UK? The Wembley gig seems to have sold well so people are interested. I remember when Smile came out there was very little in the shops and you had to look for the CD. I did go into HMV today though and they had it as a new release and were playing a few songs. I suppose that's something. More promotion, more sales. People need to know it's out and how good it is!

Actually, you're incorrect: on the front page they advertise prominently all the upcoming releases. The Beatles' Yellow Submarine songbook (which will also be released tomorrow) has been the most easily viewable thing on that whole page for weeks now. But there's no sign of the Beach Boys, even when you navigate to the music only page of the store.

In general, I think many people on this board tend to see through rose-colored glasses. It's understandable given that by coming to this board every day, you're basically surrounded by those who've drunk the Kool-Aid. But when it comes to the Beach Boys' overall stature and presence in the public mind, I find there's a gaping discrepancy between what people here want to believe and what the truth actually is.

Well you don't have to lump me into your generalization after one comment.  I don't go on itunes' home page much, and after I looking at it, i suppose you're right.  That doesn't mean I'm clueless on the Beach Boys' public stature (or have Anyang to do with it).  Please tell me what you think I believe about the band's public stature.

Actually I think the Promo work in the UK has been the best since 15 Big Ones IMHO , for example:

1) Radio 2 have been playing the single an awful lot for the last couple of weeks ( even my local Radio is playing it )
2) The new album is this week  'Album Of The Week' on Radio 2
3) Nearly every daily newspaper has given ( in some cases not great ) the album a review
4) The Sunday Times ran a 6 page BB's article yesterday
5) Why do you think the Wembley gig sold out so quick ? Radio 2 plugged it a few times earlier in the week

So yes , Radio 2 are plugging our Boys  ;D

Maybe EMI should commission a short TV Ad , but hey that's damn expensive - But wouldn't it be nice to see an Ad on UK TV for the new album after the VW 'God Only Knows' Advert ?

No, you're right, it isn't my place to articulate what your individual view is, and I certainly didn't mean it to read that way. My apologies for not being clear.

They were two separate thoughts:
I was responding to you specifically in the first paragraph, yes. Then, thinking about the lack of marketing muscle in iTunes, it reminded me how in general, my experience is that Joe Q. Public doesn't know/care all that much about the BBs, at least not as much as people like us (meaning you, me, and other fans that are likely to visit this message board) would like.

Great to hear!! I will have no problems whatsoever saying "I was wrong" when this happens.

I'm enjoying your book by the way Mark. I'm reading a few each day - it was Alice Cooper, John Sebastian, and Hal Blaine this morning. It really is an effective, fruitful concept you've come up with - the 50 different songs, 50 different interviews. And I'm impressed by many of the people you enlisted. Your narrative is toned just right to guide the reader through anecdotes from the interview subject while at the same time telling a story and relaying background information. But most of all, it's just pure fun to read. Thank you!

Wow, it wasn't even in the top 200 when I noticed it, 30 minutes ago.  Being #16 on iTunes is more impressive than the Amazon rankings.  This album should definitely hit the top 5.

Also cool to see "Sounds Of Summer" and "20 Greatest Hits" charting on the bottom end of the top 200.

I will admit to being an early fan  of Chasing Pavements way before she was part of the mainstream American scene, and she has a few songs on each album that are pretty good, but- meh. She has a good voice, but I don't think she's made a good album yet. Again, I apologize to all the scads of Adele fans apparently following this board that I insulted by calling you zombies. Because The Beatles just issued "Yellow Submarine" on Blu Ray.  I believe it had gone OOP on DVD awhile back as had the soundtrack.  There were rumors floating around that both MMT and LIB are next to Blu-Ray so we can only hope for that.  It would be nice to have a complete collection of Beatles flicks on Blu-Ray.

Record company greed marches ever onward while tens of millions of people spend their entertainment dollars elsewhere.

So, there are 3 big releases this week.  Beach Boys, Neil Young, and Alan Jackson.  I'm on Amazon.com, and  they have the Beach Boys album as the 'new this week' link, with a picture of the album, and then have Neil Young and Alan Jackson listed in text below that.  So apparently Amazon thinks that's the big release this week.

Also, all three albums came out today... but the Beach Boys are sitting at #1 on their Best Seller chart.  So that leads me to believe that IN FACT the Beach Boys will outperform every other album released this week, and get the #1 spot on the Billboard charts.

On Amazon.com, as of right now, 26 people have reviewed the Beach Boys album, 15 have reviewed the Neil Young album, and only 3 have reviewed Alan Jackson's album.  Now I realize a lot of Alan Jackson fans may just buy the album at Wal-Mart instead of buying it online... but that's a pretty big discrepancy.

Beach Boys?  #1?

when does Billboard information update?

We've got to give it a week.  Next Tuesday, we'll find out where it hits the charts.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it. I believe Wednesday is the date, as the above poster mentioned.

i don't think i'm confident enough to say that Beach Boys will be #1, but a top 5 seems possibly reasonable if they keep it up for the week.

Top 3! I don't see Neil Young outperforming the Boys.  I guess, maybe Alan Jackson? I don't see that either, though I could be wrong.  So, unless Adele goes on another rampage, I think we're looking at a number one album.

We'll know roughly what the first week sales will be tomorrow or the day after when hits daily double release their "one day sales" estimations, which are nearly always accurate

That's true, Hits Daily Double has it down to a science.  With that said though, there's a couple things still in the bank that they may not account for, like that kick-ass 1 hour special they did on QVC and sold 18,000 copies.  Hits Daily Double probably won't take that into account, so add that onto whatever number they come up with.

I think the top three, will be in some order or another, Beach Boys, Alan Jackson, and John Mayer (who's first week was last week, and was really good).  Top 5 will be Beach Boys/Alan Jackson/John Mayer/Adele/Neil Young

I do not understand how Yellow Submarine Songbook is #5 on iTunes. This stuff has all been available for 43 years or so. I love The Beatles but WTH? And a brand new Beach Boys is only #14? What a world!

That's not surprising. If the Beach Boys released a greatest hits compilation AND an album of all new material today, which one do you think would sell better? I'd bet money on the compilation; people like a sure thing.

Isn't Yellow Submarine largely instrumental music composed by George Martin?  OK, half of it anyway.  The Beatles can sell anything....  :)

Not the "songtrack." The soundtrack has the Martin instrumental material.

To be fair the Beatles thing is just a rerelease of a rerelease of a rerelease of their worst album.  So.....

Not sure why, but I love that picture.

The new album has dropped way back to #14 on iTunes.  :-[  Maybe because Amazon is kicking their ass on the price (only $4.99)

I'm certain that's what it is. Amazon gets you the same songs, at the same speed--that is, instantly--for half the price. Why wouldn't someone who wants to download the album do so through Amazon?

I still think they're going to grab #1.  Hits Daily Double (where all this is coming from) predicted John Mayer would sell 20-30% more last week than he did to get #1, and were off 10,000 or so on some of the others, so I think the QVC numbers are going to push them over the top.  Plus, this Amazon thing... Amazon dropped the price to 4.99 and they've been stuck at #1 ever since.  They're sitting at #1 above Adele and above Alan Jackson, and have been for 3 days.

Either way, a Brian Wilson written, arranged, produced, and sung Beach Boys album is about to go back into territory they haven't seen since the 60's.

It's well worth noting The Beach Boys had no Amazon number ones in the sixties. Reason enough to have a drink!

What's interesting is the album's lead on Jackson I believe is higher on Amazon than how far the album is behind Jackson on iTunes, no?

It's really hard to tell one way or the other, they may be wayyyyy ahead on amazon.  I would think most people would check both places before buying it... so hell they may be outselling #2, 2 to 1 on Amazon and making up for any shortcoming on Itunes.

Title: Re: Number #1

Also i'm pretty sure Amazon is more likely to sell a lot more full albums.

That's interesting too.  I'm not hip on the new technology, though... would people who usually use Itunes

1. buy an album, instead of just seperate mp3's, and

2. Know that you could also buy mp3's on amazon?

It has probably already been mentioned earlier in this or other threads, but stuff can chart really high on Amazon and not nearly as high on the Billboard chart. I've seen some relatively niche stuff make it pretty high on Amazon's charts. But these sources that predict chart placements are, for better or worse, usually pretty accurate. Considering that this BB album is getting a lot of press but still not nearly as much as a number of other hit artists currently, I think anything in the Top 5 or 10 is pretty impressive.

I hope if nothing else that a high chart placement will lead to more recording and touring as a unit. That's the only real reason I would care about the charts.

I'm pretty sure they would, but I think your more likely on itunes to have more casual fans pick the single and maybe some of the other tracks over an album whereas with Amazon there's a lot of older people who might not know about buying individual songs or just want a physical copy of the album.

Frankly, until I came here, I never considered buying mp3's from Amazon.  Though I prefer entire albums, when purchasing mp3's I still almost always purchase them from iTunes.  I have an account, a gift card, it's easy, and I would imagine most young people purchase their music through iTunes.

It's still sitting pretty at #3 on Amazon's chart almost two weeks after it's release. Guess the TV exposure is paying off.

Even Sounds Of Summer is at #40 now. In the UK however TWGMTR has dropped to #24 but I can see it selling for quite a while though what with the September Wembley concert and i'm pretty sure they'll promote the album when there over here.
