Hope this isn't a topic already, but I thought it might be interesting to call out some musical continuities between classic BB and TWGMTR.

First one off the top of my head - the little guitar line on "From There To Back Again" around 1:10 sounds eerily similar to the little guitar line on "The Night Was So Young" around :17 seconds (and repeated throughout).

Anyone else pick up on something?

In "Spring Vacation" Mike Love says "Good Vibrations" which was a song they made back in the '60's.  :)

I'm just messing with you.  This isn't as obvious and may not even be intentional, but at the end of From There to Back Again the music pauses.... and then repeats back again just as strong... just like they famously did at the end of "You Still Believe In Me". It's at 2 minutes or so in.   Probably more of a technique than a homage. 

The sparse snare drum reminds me a lot of the end round of "God Only Knows" too. 

that descending guitar thing is a brian signature in my mind.  love it when i hear that sound.  i'll listen for it on tuesday hehe

I don't know why but when i'm singin' Isn't It Time chorus i end up singin' Summer Of Love.

Isn't it time we dance the night away? Goin’ out and lookin’ for love (girls are always ready)

But catchy song anyway, i can really picture Dennis singin' some parts.

They quote the tag from "At My Window" early on in "From There."  I noticed "The Night Was So Young" thing too.

Yes! I felt the same way immediately after hearing the song for the first time.

From the clips, I think shelter has a ring of time to get alone, particularly the "now its 2o clock lines around the block waiting for the parade" I almost expect a "deep and wide" to come along. 

Daybreak over the Ocean - Bluebirds over the Mountain.

The beginning of "Shelter" sounds a bit like the beginning of "San Miguel". It's not the first time Brian's lifted that melody. But I like to look at it as a nod to both Dennis and Carl.

This album would have more groove if they added moog to it. Brian is a master of mooging.
I think 2-3 songs should've had moog bass. It's lacking that Love Yoy/Fairy Tale Music/Funky Pretty vibe... only needed a few songs like that, i think the moog era is more interesting than 1965 anyway so guess im biased...

There is a guitar lick on Strange World that is note for note the same as a lick used in Lay down burden.

The bicycle bell in Strange World is a nod to You Still Believe In Me/In My Childhood.

The stunted drum fills in From There To Back Again are reminsicent of Hal Blaine during the Pet Sounds era. He does it on a couple songs.

Also, the tack piano in Summer's Gone (hell, everything about Summer's Gone!) is similar to Caroline, No. Even the way they mixed it - harder panned to stereo than the rest of the album - very 60s-esque stereo imaging.

The tack piano reminded me more of the Bicycle Rider theme-- Caroline, No used harpsichord, I think.

At the beginning of Strange World, I expect Alec Baldwin to start talking about nature and crap.

Let's not forget that "I'll give you shelter from the storm" is "Don't know if words can say" from "Darlin"

I hear "Caroline No!" bit in "Summer's Gone" but also a little bit of "Lets Go Away For Awhile".  Beautiful mood.

It's similar, yes, but the melody is somewhat different.

True. He goes down on "the storm" instead of up on "can say". And it's a different key.

Does anyone else want to break into "Ohhhhhhh way ohhhhhhhhhh" (South American) right before the chorus of "The Private Life Of Bill & Sue"?

Raise "South American" up a step or two and you could probably do a mashup. "Bill and Sue" is more fun, though.

Shelter may possibly reference 'Lines', it has the lyric 'Lines around the block', bit of a stretch, but it's possible.

sounds like the melody for

"Lavender sunset / Silver pink clouds Park Avenue" from Rainbow Eyes

Maybe Strange World is influenced by the the last two tracks of REM's cd Automatic For The People:

The use of piano in Strange World has similarities to Nightswimming by REM.

& more obvious:

At the end of the song you'll hear a melodica melody that is also similar to the melodica melody of Find The River by R.E.M.

As I already mentioned, 'Daybreak over the Ocean' is just like 'Bluebirds over the Mountain' loosely based on 'My Bonnie'. But yesterday I noticed that it also has similarities with another Beach Boys song.

The synth (?) in Strange World around 2:37 is very similar to the "...and I know she loves me" line in Island Girl.

Shelter: "Do you still ever think of me..." similar to "Will I still joke around..." from "When I Grow Up".

Similar, but not identical.

And that whole chunk of "Shelter" has been haunting me so much the last couple of days.

The organ *blip* from Spring Vacation sounds a lot like that vocal *blip* from Friends. Both mistakes (?), but both very noticeable.

You can nearly sing "Lookin' At Tomorrow" to the melody of "Think About the Days." Same melody, just a bit different phrasing. Not intentional, I'm sure -- it's a very common melodic pattern.
