Title: An excuse for everyone to say how much they dislike the NME
Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on May 31, 2012, 03:59:45 PM
Average NME review for TWGMTR:

6/10. Review was along the lines of: 'The Beach Boys reuniting with Brian Wilson onboard ought to be as exciting as a Smiths reunion, however after three decades of terrible material that's not the case. ... There's good songs on the album, but sadly it soon reverts to familiar '80's MOR'.

Well it's not as bad as they make it out to be but it's not a top 5 BB album or all time classic by any means

8/10 on a good day

6 out of 10 isn't that bad!
It's a bit like the guardian review, they slate the sh*t out it and then give it an almost decent score.
Critics are going to be put off madly by pure cheese like "Spring Vacation", and the initially calypso sounding "Private Life" (though that has really grown on me!)

Y'know what 6/10 in high school was? 60%? You basically failed, but hey, at least it's a high failing grade.

;(

Love how the NME feel they have to point out to their ever-patronised readership that BW writing and recording for the Beach Boys again is A Good Thing, like a Smiths reunion would be.

The only good reviews NME gives out are to bands they've over hyped as the next oasis

Well, most of the record does sound like "80s MOR" and 6 out of 10 isn't too bad either.

After listening to the CD 5 times in a row I gotta agree with this. I'd give it a 7/10, though. It's pleasant enough.

The first half is pleasant enough. The second half is heartbreaking, brave and beautiful, and I'm amazed if any Beach Boys fan would fail to be moved by it.

I've never needed an excuse to say how much I hate the NME.

"Brave"? How..? Anyway, I hope I'll still get around to feeling what you describe about TWGMTR. It has its beautiful moments, sure, but heartbreaking? Not so much.. the only moment that kinda moved me was the last few lines of lyrics in "Summer's Gone".

See! I think this is fair. A six, that just seems a bit low. A seven seems perfectly reasonable coming from reviewers.
