Review was along the lines of: 'The Beach Boys reuniting with Brian Wilson onboard ought to be as exciting as a Smiths reunion, however after three decades of terrible material that's not the case. ... There's good songs on the album, but sadly it soon reverts to familiar '80's MOR'. It's a bit like the guardian review, they slate the sh*t out it and then give it an almost decent score. Critics are going to be put off madly by pure cheese like "Spring Vacation", and the initially calypso sounding "Private Life" (though that has really grown on me!) The second half is heartbreaking, brave and beautiful, and I'm amazed if any Beach Boys fan would fail to be moved by it. A seven seems perfectly reasonable coming from reviewers. |
