That little snippet about the copyright lawsuit probably makes the most sense of the copyright lawsuit so far. I don't think we've yet got a good handle on how it was and what it really was all about. Title: Re: Mike Love interview Post by: Ron on May 31, 2012, 08:10:29 AM Cam, you've probably seen it, but if you haven't: there's a blow by blow account floating around on the internet from somebody who went to court everyday, it's a very interesting read. It really made me see things differently. Supposedly there was a moment where Mike stood up in court and told everybody what assholes all Brian's handlers and lawyers were at the time, and how he wanted to settle out of court for a token amount but Brian's lawyers wanted to keep manipulating Brian for money, etc. , so Brian (who appeared on the stand and basically said Mike wrote everything) ended up losing four or five times what Mike wanted to settle for out of court.

What I'm not sure on is who was being sued? Brian no longer owned the publishing did he? I know there was a suit of Love v. Irving Music et al with Brian being one of about 7 or 8 et als [most being subsidiaries of Irving]. Was there a separate suit against Brian? There has only ever been one suit discussed. If the Love v. Irving et al was the only suit, who pays, would Brian pay part, would he pay anything? Anyway, maybe it is just me but could Brian chang the authorship on music he no longer owned, if he didn't own it? Seems not. Wouldn't Mike have to sue the owner [Irving?] to change the authorship? Aww, f it. I thought that Brian sued Irving, and won some amount of money. Then Mike sued Brian for a portion of that money, because he had written some of the songs in the Sea of Tunes catalog. |
