Interviewers and the BBs themselves keep saying that the last time the BBs played the Hollywood Bowl was June 66 but as some of you will recall they played there in September 82 and again with Chicago in May 1989.  Memories are fleeting,

I didn't know that. Are there pictures around ?

Nice photo! It looks like Carl is playing a Guild Starfire guitar. I had never seen him with one before.

Not sure if Brian was at the Sept 82 Bowl show-as none of the LA papers deigned to review the show (BBs were off the radar in 82). Anyone on this board know????? He did, however, play a solo set at the Hollywood Bowl show in 89-which was one of a number of CA shows being filmed for the summer BB TV show.  Actually-in the recent piece-the interviewer said "The last time you played the Bowl was in 1965" and Bruce corrected him-"1966-June 25" so he recalled the date of that show-but has amnesia about 1982 and 1989.  Also-in various interviews it has been stated that this is the first album everyone has participated in "29 years." In another interview it was "24 years."  Brian said he hadn't played with the guys in 20 years.   In actuality-they all played on Stars and Stripes in 1996 and that was the last year Brian played a BB show-so the correct answer would be the first time in sixteen years.  Hard to believe that 1996 is now sixteen years ago!! Makes me feel old.

Yeah it's funny how they keep tossing the decades around when figuring out how long they haven't played or recorded together.  ;D Fact is: this line-up has never been onstage together before 2012.

Right-I suppose it is more relevant to say that for the first time since August 1997 there is a Wilson onstage with Mike Love.

Not to mention that Mike appears to be holding a guitar, as well.

The Hollywood Bowl themselves cant seem to get it straight. Their sanctioned history book sold in their gift shop listed the Beach Boys FIRST appearance there as 1965. The correct year is 1962.

Hmm always thought it was 1963. Guess I was wrong..  ???

I only have this picture of said appearance, and Brian looks rather '63-ish to me. Maybe it was in late 1962?

I think Mike's hairline is a more accurate way to pin down the dates of these things. :lol I think circa mid-'63 Mike had a little less hair than he does here. Based on that alone, I'd guess the image was take in late-'62/early-'63.

They played two Y-days at the Bowl, on successive years. Why is there controversy about this here?

The picture is from their SECOND appearance at the Hollywood Bowl in October 19, 1963. The FIRST appearance was on October 27, 1962. This is fact.

I didn't say it was from their first appearance at the Bowl, I just said I was pretty sure it is from 1963.  ;)

Yeah, badly phrased in that context - sorry Jon.  Who knows what exactly I was referring to there.. At least now we're clear on everything @Bowl.

You know, for years, the date of that picture was thought to have been November 1, 1963. I think it was even documented in a couple of books, and/or magazine articles/CD liner notes. Then further investigation by a researcher (Ian Rusten?) was done and the October '63 date was solidified.  One of my favorite pictures of The Boys.

One of the intriguing things about that photo is that Al is playing a Gibson (SG style Les Paul) which no other photo shows him playing. Also...this is the first known Beach Boys gig following David's Oct. 5th departure from the group. BTW All of Al's prior appearances with the Beach Boys in 1963 had him playing bass, so here's his first known photo on guitar with boys.

Not at all. Normally I cherish accurate wording myself, but everybody has his weak moments, I suppose.  Thanks for pointing out mine.  ;)

Do we know if it was his' (Al's) guitar or if he loaned it from someone else ?

Maybe this thread could be renamed ("Beach Boys gigs at the Hollywood Bowl" or whatever)? This would make future references and searches easier. The current "Completist in me feels obliged to mention..." is not very telling.. maybe Ian himself could do that?

The recent ZinePak says that they last played the HollyWood Bowl in 1967.  :lol

Well, in those photos of the guy from Eddie and the Showmen backstage (one has Carl in the background smoking a cigarette), the guitar looks very similar.

EDIT:  Steve Hoffman was able to contact Brett Brady (of Eddie & The Showmen), who lives in Hawaii now, and he can confirm that Al Jardine was using his Gibson SG Custom on that day back in 1963..:

"yeah... that's my '62 Les Paul SG.. what a "fun fun fun" day!"

I had never heard the full gig.  Very interesting to listen to the Jan & Dean and Honeys sets, but also the Surfaris, the Challengers, Duane Eddy and the Fleetwoods (love them!).

Fascinating, just terrific to hear that. It sounds like some of the bands couldn't handle their endings of songs very well... :)
