Title: SiriusXM Beach Boys Weekend LIVE as it Happens...Post Here
Post by: SloopJohnnyB on May 25, 2012, 03:29:03 PM
I'll be streaming the Beach Boys Endless Summer Weekend Special and concert as will many of you and I thought it would be cool to post and comment on whats being played .

What have you heard?

So Far:

I Get Around
Surf's Up
Be True to your School

Bruce did a promo/tag.

I don't care to hear the hits from other artists but what can you do. I want a 'All Beach Boys' channel! I'm hoping that they taped some interviews to play between songs.

Let's see what the weekend brings. I'm hoping for more deep tracks. On this 60's Hits station 'Surf's Up' IS a deep track.

TWGMTR is playing now. Nice.

Al Jardine promo!

'Don't go near the water' playing now! Wow! They are going deep!!!

Caught me off guard...and I missed the first 5 minutes of my recording. Hopefully (or perhaps obviously), they're re-running it throughout the weekend (i.e. the aforementioned 12/26, noon airing).

Wait, so they decided to add pitch correction to these vocals after they played it before the tour started?

Wait, so they decided to add pitch correction to these vocals after they played it before the tour started?

Considering that he show was recorded in late April, they could've gone back and done a multitude of things -- beyond pitch correction -- in the studio as well. Some tracks sound more tweaked than others. Some not as much.

It will repeat at 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern Standard Time (Saturday Morning) and 'throughout the Memorial Day Weekend'. I'm sure the 12:00 p.m. listing is still a go.

This IS a nice summer themed program. I'll be listening all weekend.  :rock

Remember that the concert was recorded before the tour even started - so it may sound the way those first few concerts sounded. (i.e B-Pain?)

Like I said...a few things sounded like they may have been laid-in after-the-fact or were canned. For example, Brian's bridge on Do It Again. "Radio" sounded more like a layered studio recording than what we've heard on the TV performances so far. Though, there was audible auto tune as well at times.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'd rather have certain things sound more polished than not to the masses. I'm sure the PBS show will be heavily post-produced as well. I believe that's going to be out on DVD, too.

Not LIVE but part of the SiriusXM playlist:

Long Promised Road
Friends
Almost Summer (Mike Love and Celebration...I still think this song should have been released on a Beach Boys LP)
Break Away
Palisades Park...Wow...didn't expect to hear this one!

A deep playlist? I say yes. Still waiting for 'Funky Pretty'!  :o

Yeah, I wish they would play some of these songs on the current tour.

I swear that I heard Jeffrey Foskett's version of 'I Live for the Sun' which is really good by the way. Maybe it was The Stingrays.

Nice hearing 'Beach Baby' by The First Class.

SiriusXM is doing a nice job.

On the way home from work tonight I heard Long Promised Road, Graduation Day (studio), California Saga, That's How God Made The Radio, Keep An Eye On Summer, Surfin' Safari, Cottonfields, and Wouldn't It Be Nice. Mike discussed the lyrics to Wouldn't It Be Nice before the song was played. I expect the "interview" segments will be like this - song discussion intros by members of the band. The programming of this is very well done. No commercials of course!

Wish I had a way to "record" this.

Nope, all you need is your email address: http://www.siriusxm.com/freetrial They'll give you a password and it's yours free for a week.

I'm really impressed with the songs they've been playing! Wish I had Sirius for a normal radio...I plan on being outside all weekend and don't trust my laptop by the pool.

Signed up for the free trial - pretty disappointed. It's ridiculous that this is I'm 60s on 6 and that they dont have their own channel. The garbage that they're playing in between the BBs is for the most part, just that, garbage. If they want to play beach boys RELATED material, that would be cool. Like tue honeys (which I just heard). But that's not generally what I've been hearing. Eg I like CCR but NOT on a supposedly beach boys endless summer weekend!!! It's very annoying. I also want to hear more rarities and other such things. That what they did a couple years ago with McCartney when he was promoting the fireman (and of course he had his own channel unlike the beach boys).

Now they're playing wipeout (the original). I can dig that. But little freakin red riding hood - which I've heard twice now??! WTF?!?! When they play s--t like that it makes me want to put a double barrelled shotgun in my mouth and pull the trigger. (I'm very passionate about the proper treatment of the beach boys:))

Not to mention that they should be playing tracks from the new album plus rarities!!! This is a real misse opportunity. Although its better than nothing, I realize.

OK, I've got the free trial. What channel is the Beach Boys concert running on? 60s at 6 is playing Frankie Valli right now and the earlier press release said the concert should be running right now.

Edit: It just came on on 60s at 6, appropriately enough, 6 minutes into the hour.

Just as an FYI, when they replayed the show at 6am (ET) this morning (5/26), they only included the concert portion. No interview. So, some re-airings *might* do the same. They simply listed it as Beach Boys in Concert.

Thus, there's just been the two complete airings w/ interview so far...for those keeping score (i.e. listed as Artist Confidential). :)

I recorded it. If there's enough demand, and if someone doesn't beat me to the punch, I could upload it. Though, in good faith, I suppose I should at least wait until it's done airing this weekend on Sirius...lol. Is that acceptable practice around here?

My recording came from Dish Network. One of the slight advantages there is that Dish broadcasts it at a slightly higher bitrate than the internet feed (192 kbps vs. 128 kbps). I've recorded from both and personally prefer the Dish feed.

Let me know, folks, if there's any interest for an upload (or if someone else plans to do it)?  :)

Geez, tough crowd. I don't have an issue with it - they play great songs, many not played on your local oldies station. Heard "He's A Doll" and "Surfin' Down The Swanne River" by the Honeys and "Summer Means Fun" by Bruce & Terry, "Hey Little Cobra" and a coupla Jan & Dean songs. Not bad! This morning Brian gave a little intro before one of the Beach Boys songs and he sounded like his old '74 voice! Anybody else notice that? Beach Boys deep tracks are very cool! But you know, the hard cores here have heard 'em all anyway so don't be too rough on Channel 6!

Personally, I think the BB's playlist over the last few days has been quite good. Here's a nifty tool that shows every BB's track that was played on Sirius, on every channel, in descending order. Channel 6 is obviously the biggie this weekend.

Many deep cuts.

There must be some rationale for the playlist, since it is 60's music format.  It might be to hear the Beach Boys "in context" of music that was highly played and recognized in that era, even if they are the stars. These were the songs that the Beach Boys were competing agains for chart position.  It sounds kind of cool, as it was an old hand-me-down AM transistor radio that brought the music to this kid in 1965!  It sounds like vintage AM hit parade radio.  Now, that was really FREE!

This is Sirius Free trial!

Still sounds like the price is right!  ;)

i used to use a program called polderbits to convert tapes to mp3 or wav files. if i remember correctly it would also record streaming feeds. it comes with a 7 day free trial. so maybe one could download the program from the net and record the concert. i can't remember if it had a limit of file sizes so one may have to save part of the show and start another recording. it has been 3 years since i used it, lost it and my computer it was on in the fire. but it was a great program.

Here's a few ways to record a stream:

Look for the input for headphones on your computer. Purchase a line that has the RCA plugs (red and white) on one end and a headphone jack on the other end. (Radio Shack in the U.S. will have it). Plug the headphone jack into the computer headphone input hole. The RCA plugs can go into an input on your stereo. If you have a recording device on/in your stereo you should be able to record. You can enjoy the stream audio through your stereo as well.

Those same RCA plugs can be plugged into a DVD Recorder. You can record many hours of audio on a DVD-R. Yes, it has to be played back through the DVD player but it can also be played through your Stereo if the DVD player is hooked up to  your stereo.

Also, you can purchase software for your computer. I use a old version of MAGIX Cleaning Lab which I use for converting my Records to CD. You can record 'in line' straight from a stream with the software and then burn it to a CD.

Hope this helps. For home use only!   :smash

The John Stamos interview with Mike and Al repeats Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (and probably Monday, too)

It has BB music throughout the interview. I only caught a few minutes at the end but it sounded good.

I think Stamos sounds really sincere when he says that the BBs are his idols. He's a big fan just like the rest of us.

Looking forward to the interview show.

I've gotten several PMs about my recording, so I'll be uploading it in the next day or so. I'm working on it right now. :)

Really nice to listen with headphones. Beautiful stereo mix...even with the requisite lossy compression scheme of Sirius. I wonder if Mark L. had anything to do with the mix? Some of the stuff has been "tweaked" a bit in post/in the studio (e.g. Brian's bridge vocal on Do It Again and pretty much all of TWGMTR, some vocals, etc.), but most of it still has that nice, live feel to it. As I've been away from home this weekend, I would love to hear any sort of recording, if possible.

I'm really impressed by John's drumming and Dave's guitar work. It cooks!

Thanks so much, man  ;D I caught a small part of the first section of the concert, and I gotta say they sounded pretty great.  Whatever post-production stuff they added seems to blend pretty nicely, as far as I can tell.  There's no glaring use of pitch correction either, well, at least on what I heard (through Little Deuce Coupe). Maybe it gets worse later on...

pitch correction would seem to be a good thing asssuming pitch was incorrect.     one usually wants to hear good pitch.  No? :p

Let's not get this discussion raging here like the other threads, but blatant, robotic pitch correction is never a good thing. Subtle, tasteful pitch correction can go a long ways.

What's the policy on something like this, Billy? I'm an old PSML guy from the 90s who just joined up here recently. Is this considered a no-no in terms of posting a public link?

It's kind of a grey area in this case. I mean, for a while, BRI was pulling You Tube clips, and I think some of the initial tour footage was pulled. However, since then, it seems to have stopped. I guess posting YouTube links is okay with them now, but not from filesharing sites.  Meh...I'm tired and prob should go to bed. :lol

Did anyone listen?

OK, so the Stamos interview repeats Monday at 6 PM Eastern Time, correct?  Is there a schedule posted somewhere?

So far we have:
-- The Jim Ladd interview with the entire group (20 mins) which preceded the original Artist Confidential concert broadcast
-- The Artist Confidential concert (33 mins)
-- The John Stamos interview with Mike and Al (80 mins)
-- Plus some snippets prior to various songs throughout the weekend.

Anything else?  It is cool that they are doing this , as Beach Boys Memorial Day weekend specials used to be quite common, but it's been a zillion years since I last heard one.

Also Thanks to SloopJohnnyB for pointing out that you can get a seven day free trial of the internet feed, and to Dave Modny for pointing out that the internet feed is 128 kbps and the Dish Network feed is 192kbps.  I subscribe to Sirius XM in my car, but the over the air satellite sound quality is really quite poor, probably 64 kbps max, and much lower than that on the talk/sports channels.  Listening online today, even though the feed is only 128 kbps, it sounds significantly better than the over the air satellite feed signal in my car.

Lads, here in LA this endless summer weekend is a joy. I has the car radio version but upgraded for 30 bucks to the internet and thus smart phone ap versions, so I can stay connected constantly.  The Honey's on now.

If you want to distinguish between enforced nostalgia and the BB, listen to "Beach Baby," a terrible retro song, which I heard yesterday.

This is a great tribute; concert was excellent. I do hope someone posts the link on the site--if appropriate. I have no idea what the future bibliographic status of the concert will be, so I hope to be able to hear it again.  But I follow the lead of my brothers here; I don't want anything inappropriate.  Please advise.

I have never started a thread and do not know how to do so, but I am bound for the santa barbera show and will report in on Tuesday.

I know it ends soon....

But I would settle for a complete recording of the whole weekend program.

Wonder if Sirius might sell a package?

It's near midnight est and now we get 'David Marks Remembers' clips. I've been listening as much as I can throughout the weekend but this is the first I've heard these interview clips. Fantastic!

David obviously has a great memory of the early years. He just talked about the car engine on the beginning '409' being recorded late at night and causing a disturbance. Cool hearing David talk about the early years.

The play list is a bit repetitive but just when I'm ready to turn it off something new shows up.

The Stamos interview was good. Try to listen tomorrow.

The Beach Boys All American Summer Special can be heard tonight at 7:00 p.m. streaming on a radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was able to just catch it at 11:00 a.m. on another Cumulus station. This one was hard to track down.

They spend a segment discussing and playing clips from the new album. At least 4-5 songs were featured. TWGMTR, Spring Vacation, Summer's Gone and more. This is the first interview that I've heard where the new album was discussed in more detail.

Listen Live at 7:00 p.m. est tonight:

Holy B-Pain!  ;D

Like I noted earlier, in a few cases, it goes beyond that. For example, the Brian vocal bridge on Do It Again sounds like it's simply a flown-in studio vocal. Listening with headphones, the tone of the vocal completely changes to everything else around it (it's also doubled or has some kind of doubling effect effect applied to it), but more importantly, it's abruptly and unnaturally faded out at the end. Some other stuff, too (e.g. TWGMTR). :)

Still a great show though!

That Cotton Fields single (the version of the song Al reworked and they released) is the one that was released worldwide. It got to #1 in Australia, South Africa, Norway, and Sweden. #2 in Denmark, #3 in Ireland. Top 5 in the UK, Japan, Spain, #12 in Holland, #13 in New Zealand, and #29 in Germany. Yet is failed miserably in the US at #103.

And as said above, Cotton Fields was added to the international release of Sunflower because it did so amazing overseas.

This concert will forever go down as the Auto-tune fuckfest. It was sooooo bad and soooo obvious, robo-Brian and robo-Mike were in FULL effect. I know it was recorded in April but geeze the auto-tune never had to happen. I feel especially bad for the crowd at the first few shows where they used it. That night in Pittsburgh they were all so strong with their vocal deliveries, I would never of thought they would have considered it. Basically, f*** Joe Thomas. Time changes vocals (except Al) over time but the tone and overall vibe of their voice (i.e Mike's nasal delivery or Bruce's shimmering voice) is always there. I just think auto-tune was/is a horrible decision for anything live. The album, whatever, just never again live. I'd rather hear the air puffs from an oxygen tank while these guys are celebrating their 60th instead of any B-pain bullshit!

I'll tell you what's wild...I'm listening to this Stamos-Al-Mike interview that was done for SiriusXM, and at the end of the interview, they're playing what sounds like one of those home-brewed **stereo** mixes of Good Vibrations! I did some research and apparently this isn't the only "unofficial" creation like this that Sirius has in their playlist library. Pretty bizarre to say the least.

Hell, maybe someone on this board did the actual mix that they're playing...lol.

I think the concert itself is great and lots of fun. The autotune (or whatever it is) was also used on at least one of the Mike & Bruce shows Sirius broadcasted and I think it's common on such radio shows. It only got a little annoying on California Girls imo.

And kudos to Stamos for bringing up an on stage fight between Mike and Dennis right at the beginning of the interview  :-D
