Title: YOUR ideal Vault/Unreleased Compilation Tracklisting
Post by: punkinhead on May 16, 2012, 11:15:18 AM
Since lately, we've all been discussing what should or shouldn't go on a future comp...I'd like to see what your ideal release should be....whether it's 1 disc or 5 discs...it's up to you...I just wanna see a tracklisting...in some form order, chronological or whatever you want...I really get a kick outta reading this kind of stuff... doesn't matter if you've heard it before or not (not revealing sources or anything like that)...just a fantasy post like I always post every now and then.

I'll post my soon

14.  Come To The Sunshine
15.  Oh Lord

I know nothing about 'em other than they're in the vaults and i LOVE the titles. The rest of my choices i've either heard and think they deserve official releases, or i've not heard but am dying to hear (WIBNTLA obviously). But no, the above two i know nowt about other than Brian wrote 'em and they've got great titles!

I've probably missed out a few.

Of the top of my head - Back Home I, Awake, Soul Searching, Walkin', Lines.

Title: Re: YOUR ideal Vault/Unreleased Compilation Tracklisting

1. Burlesque
2. WIBNTLA
3. River Song - as mentioned above
4. Thank Him
5. Still A Mystery
6. Can't Wait Too Long - a finished one
7. That song from the SnS era - but the original mix that people were raving about; lyrics by Tony Asher
8. Dennis' soldier song - or has that come out?
9. Had to Phone Ya - early version w/more backing
10. Sail On Sailor - the "cut the crap" composition cassette
11. Any live studio rehearsals of new songs, if that exists - TWGMTR would be fine, if that's all there is
12. It's A Beautiful Day - that hasn't been collected anywhere yet, right?

That's all I can think of; I may be wrong about releases, etc., so don't kill me if I am!

OK. I'm gonna try to be as realistic as possible, in somewhat chron

"Back Home" (1963 version)
"All Day, All Night" (Smiley Smile outtake)
"Where Is She" (Sunflower outtake)
"(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" (Surf's Up outtake)
"California Feelin'" (1974 demo)
"You're Riding High on the Music" (1974 demo)
"In the Back of My Mind" (1975 recording)
"Come to the Sunshine" (15 Big Ones outtake)
"California Feelin'" (L.A. (Light Album) outtake)
"Boys and Girls" (KTSA outtake)
"Goin to the Beach" (KTSA outtake)
"Sweetie" (1981 recording?)
"Wouldn't that be Cool" (Made in USA outtake)
"Dancin' the Night Away" (1995 recording)

Gimme this and I'll be more than happy. Obviously a few I don't know the quality of, but I'll take that chance.

Maybe also the nice Surfer Girl w/Brian on piano--this was in the American Band film, but I believe comes from the Cinemax or Showtime special that was made for KTSA--what was the name of that show, anyway? I feel like I never see it mentioned.

(Thank Him For) Our Love - "Marvelled at this feeling we share". Aaah.

You're Still a Mystery - Enchanting.

Back Home (Sunflower version) - Better than the released version.

Ten Years of Harmony [1981] official double album comp.

"Recreation"
"Gonna Hustle You"
"Black Wednesday"
"Witch Stand", "Girlie", and "Hot Harp" for The Survivors

Also, everything already mentioned and anything I missed which is probably a lot!

Let's not forget Dennis's "I've Got A Friend" instrumental track, supposedly stellar. If the live performances are any indication, I'd put that among the very best unreleased stuff along with WIBNTLA and Brian's "California Feeling" demo. "Solar System" with unexpectedly creative backing vocals only is supposedly terrific as well.

Title: Re: YOUR ideal Vault/Unreleased Compilation Tracklisting

I think mine is fairly easy.  I'm not asking anyone to really go mining too far into the vaults.  Most of this stuff should be easily accessable.  I'd rather have high quality versions of songs I know (or heard reputable sources report) were good, rather than risk disc space on something that could turn out to be the equivalent of "Teeter Totter Love".  Not that I wasn't happy with TTL's inclusion on the Smile sessions, I'm just thinking it's very doubtful we'd ever get a Vaults collection that spanned more than five CD's (I'm thinking two at best) so I'm trying to think economically here.  A lot of us probably consider most of these "easy" to find but I feel all of it deserves to stand in the band's active catalog, in release level quality.

Back Home (first and second versions; maybe one on each disc)
Thank Him For Our Love
Sherry, She Needs Me (completed with a "sweetened" 2012 lead vocal from Al)
I Guess I'm Dumb (regardless)
The Letter
Can't Wait Too Long (pieced together and "finished", if possible)
My Solution
Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again
Carry Me Home
It's A New Day
Big Sur (original version)
We Got Love
Hard Times
Wild Honey (live with lead vocal by Blondie)
Jumpin' Jack Flash (live)
Honkin' Down the Highway (with Billy Hinche lead vocal)
Ruby Baby (Love You era)
It's Over Now (in the correct key)
Calendar Girl
California Feeling (incorporating Brian's demo vocal, if possible)
It's A Beautiful Day
Stevie
Runaway (live)
Any number of songs from Summer In Paradise (preferably Island Fever, Walking In The Sand, or Under the Boardwalk) completed by putting the 1994 vocals onto a new track arranged and produced by Brian and recorded by his band
Dancin' the Night Away
You're Still a Mystery

Not a problem. It's just that most of the songs on these lists have been booted before (with exception to "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again", the 3 Survivors cuts, and maybe a handful of others) in addition to a couple on YouTube, so we already know what they sound like and would like to see them formally released. If you've never heard them before, how can you recommend them for release? And basing your selections on "loving the titles" is a little bit childish, don't you think? And you say you don't know anything about them so I assume you've never even read about them, so why list them? Just wonderin'.  ;D

Yeah, obviously Alan's the guy to ask about those, but I don't remember hearing or running across those titles when I was working for him—and I don't have my notes real handy.

Stuff like that, though, if all we know is the title and that it's in the vault, usually ends up being some sort of Shortenin' Bread or Ding-Dang related noodling.

If only, although I'd settle for stellar unreleased versions of songs we might be familiar with, like the Surf's Up on the Smile Sessions.

See, this is why the Beach Boys Central site was such a great idea. Instead of having to press a shitload of CDs, just offer the tracks for download in FLAC and mp3 and let people "roll their own", as Mark put it.

I gotta say, "Rooftop Harry" is one of those really interesting Brian titles. Who even knows if they tracked it entirely, much less got to a vocal? I have the feeling "Is Jack Rieley Really Superman" probably was never recorded, and was an off the cuff joke, but there are a few other ones that really interest me, such has "Burlesque", "Funky Fever", and "Pattycake".

For a 1-CD, strictly studio collection (no released solo --  e.g. Sound Of Free, original stereo version of Lady, etc. -- included)...give or take:

Sandy (or Sherry) She Needs Me (finish it with Al)
CIFOTM (original Smile mix)
Barnyard (original stereo Smile mix)
With A Little Help From My Friends
The Letter
Mona Kani
My Solution
Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again (well, duh!)
Walkin'
Back Home
Big Sur (4/4)
Seasons In The Sun
It's A New Day
I'm Going Your Way
Carry Me Home
We Got Love
Hard Times
California Feeling ('74) (or obviously any other/better surviving Guercio sessions of merit)
In The Back Of My Mind (remake)
Shake, Rattle & Roll
Mony, Mony
Sea Cruise
It's A Beautiful Day (full version)
Runaway (well...it *did* have some studio overdubs)
You're Still A Mystery
Soul Searchin'

Of course...any of the mythical, yet unheard-to-the-masses stuff, too. Game Of Love, Where Is She?, Burlesque, etc.

I also wouldn't mind:

I'm In Great Shape (have Al put on a new lead vocal)
CIFOTM (have Al add a lead vocal)
Barnyard (have Al or Mike add a lead vocal)
Do You Like Worms (have Al add a lead vocal)
Love To Say Dada (have Al and Bruce add lead vocals)

or:

Had To Phone Ya ("strings up" backing track only)
Just Once In My Life (backing track only)
Let's Put Our Hearts Together (backing track only)

or...or.....or.........

Oh hey, by the way, according to ESQ, it looks like the only Beach Boys stuff we'll get this year is That's Why God Made the Radio, a greatest hits album with a few new songs, and the box set.

So presumably our only chance to get vault material is the box set. I kinda wonder how many unreleased things we will get. I think we got approximately 25 unreleased cuts on the Good Vibrations: 30 Years... box set. Can we hope for that many this time? I hope they don't repeat ANY of the previously unreleased tracks from that set. I hope they do all previously unreleased stuff, and even use alternate versions of the "hits" so we can have new things. If we got 20 to 25 basically "new/unreleased" songs, I will be over the moon. Let's hope.

Yeah actually, I'm pretty sure the box set was announced in the press release that announced the reunion of the group. There haven't been any other real details on it, but I'm assuming we will get a nice amount of unreleased stuff.

There's a fairly large stack of tracks in the vaults from the 1980's. And it all seems to be really bad!! So yes 70's, yes - 80's no.

Title: Re: YOUR ideal Vault/Unreleased Compilation Tracklisting

I'm sure it's been proposed a number of times already, but hey..

A single CD / mini documentary "Brian Wilson: The Lost Years" documenting the early - mid 70's could be incredible.

Without a doubt the best way to present the unheard (and possible sub-par quality) unreleased Caribou era stuff.

A lot can be tracks we've already heard, but in much higher quality.

Awake (demo)
Good Time (original mix)
Sail On Sailor (demo)
Mount Vernon And Fairway (demo)
Daddy Dear
Good Timin ('74 rough)
California Feelin (demo)
In The Back Of My Mind ('75)
etc, etc......

All the way up to the Love You demos.

The definitive "Brian's Back" story, told through audio & visuals.

Any takers? Possibly with the initials M.L. and A.B.?  ;D

Quick change of ideal Tracklisting, make one disc of unreleased solo items by each member.
