I love Wendy, but it wasn't very strong last night. I'd love to see Kiss Me Baby. Playing Dance Dance Dance makes more sense to me than playing Do You Wanna Dance.

I hope they keep Kiss Me Baby to the end of the US leg of their tour.

How is the attendance for tonight's show, sold out like last night?

LOve that they added KMB.  Wish they had kept Wendy. I would vote off Why Do Fools  Fall in LOve.  Just prefer BB originals in the set over covers I guess....

Show just ended, I'll have the second set list up in a bit. I'd estimate there were 8,500-9,000 in attendance tonight. Looked pretty full.

Alright, the show didn't sell out, and there were some sections in the balcony that were empty or pretty close to empty, but the arena still seemed pretty full. The set list for the second half was pretty much the same as last night, except that they moved Good Vibrations up from the encore into the second set.

It's really great that they're mixing the set lists up and moving songs around...keeps things interesting.  I'm surprised they haven't hit autopilot yet.  Just add "California Saga" and we're all golden!

I suspect we'll see things tweaked throughout the run of shows. I bet it keeps Brian engaged, and a new song or so every three-four shows is just about enough to keep the band focused but not frazzled.

Glad to see KMB added. The funny thing was...when I saw the original tour setlist, Add Some Music and Kiss Me Baby were what I thought were two of the three most glaring omissions (and in the case of those two, natural choices for deeper cuts), with Darlin' being the other. At some point, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw that one as well. Sunny Californ-i-a, Good Timin' and Breakaway would be my other guesses in terms of potentials.

Now...it sure would be cool if they pulled a rabbit out of their collective hats...and went even deeper. But, I'm not complaining at all.  That's a helluva setlist as it stands. In effect, another "box set" tour. Who'd of ever thunk it?  :)

Suspect we won't hear Darlin' -- none of the original guys can sing it, and they've tried to avoid having the backing band sing leads. More's the pity, because Darian does an astonishing version of the tune.

And I can't figure out why. Both Darian and Cowsill can sing it great! Let one of 'em sing it! It's been a staple in The Beach Boys/Brian/Al band for years, even after Carl passed away. One of the best songs (hits) that they ever did, and they're ignoring it. For now....

Even though that song is so iconically attached to Carl, I personally didn't think that would be a deal-breaker. I also think it's one of the songs that Brian's been more comfortable with handling. IMO, it's one of the stronger cuts on Roxy. :)

Yeah, the problem is no actual live version sung by Brian has sounded like that.

The Roxy version is a pitch-corrected, empty theater retake taped following the actual shows.

Brian cannot sing the song anymore. Not in tune, at least. It was out of his setlist for years before Darian started doing it.


I agree that those two sound great. But they're trying to avoid backing band leads (I think DWB is the only one), to emphasize the "historic reunion" aspect. And have you seen how crabby people on this board get with the backing band members sing?

Well, duh, that's what the "auto-tune" is for.....lol. <sarcasm> :)

And, just as a side-note, I was aware of the touch-ups to Roxy ("Caroline No," etc.). I remember pointing it out to a certain "BE" years ago...back in the day of the PSML. In truth, that debut, experimental studio version of the tune with the 'Mints is wretched, pitch-wise. So...your point is well-taken!

I love "The Little Girl I Once Knew" and "Wendy" but knew they weren't really right for this reunion tour...not exciting enough for a live show with an audience this big.  Glad to see Dance Dance Dance return, and also Kiss Me Baby added.

I've never understood why Bruce has done the lead on "Wendy" since the mid-90s...I bet Mike could easily sing circles around him on this.

"Kiss me baby" - yeah !!  Hope they'll do "Wendy" again, as that's one of my favorite early tunes.

After hearing the Knebworth version, Darlin' is Carl's song. Leave it with him. I'd like to see them do Back Home.

It looks like they are adding new songs mostly during the two-nighters...second show at the Beacon, second show at Uncasville.  That would certainly make sense.  The gear is all set up at the venue, they can waltz in at any time during the day after the first show and work out another new one.  Maybe we'll get Darlin' or another new one at the second Chicago show on the 22nd.  Wow, they've got to do 28 or so more shows before I get to see them on July 1st.  These guys are keeping busy, for sure.  I do wish they'd have kept The Little Girl I Once Knew in the set, but they may change it up from time to time.  I sure ain't complainin' about the set list, though.  Hit after hit after hit.  Keep 'em coming, guys.

Nice to see Kiss Me Baby added, but I'd rather they'd kept either This Whole World or Wendy than added in Dance Dance Dance...

The perfect thing would be to keep Kiss Me Baby, This Whole World, and The Little Girl I Once Knew in the first set!

If they did all three of those when I see them Thursday, I'd just about piss my pants in excitement!  ;)

Considering the first show at Mohegan Sun was utter perfection to my ears, I had a feeling that the second show might not be as polished as the first one. There were lots of places in last night's show where singers came in a split second late or flubbed a line here and there. Mike had this happen to him a number of times, but overall it wasn't anything too bad. Brian sounded good again, except for his lead on Do You Wanna Dance, which was ragged and off key. Sail on Sailor was a little spotty as well, and we all know Brian has trouble with that song.

Al got lost on Cottonfields. He sang certain verses a bit too many times, but luckily the band kept playing along with whatever he kept repeating and covered up the mistake pretty well.

The crowd last night was a bit younger than that of the first show. Still mostly people above age 60, but I had a better view of the audience tonight from where I was sitting, and there were definitely more people under 25 there compared to the first show. I sat next to two crazy 25 year olds who'd be people I'd expect to find at a Linkin Park concert, not a Beach Boys concert. They were definitely enthusiastic, acting crazy and dancing throughout the show. They even brought their own personal beach ball that they inflated.

Mike dedicated Surfer Girl to all the mothers out there for Mother's Day. His banter was the same as it was the previous night, right down to the smallest of details.

When Kiss Me Baby was over, Al mentioned that they hadn't played that one in concert in a long time. Hopefully they keep it.

It was surprising when the band started playing Good Vibrations further up in the set list. They sang it much better than they did the first night. Unfortunately, Kokomo still seemed pretty lifeless when the band came back on stage for the encore. I think that was still the worst performance of the night.

That's what I'm hoping for here in Las Vegas.

A few more reactions:

Having Add Some Music open the second set is not only sentimental, but also really powerful. Having silence for ten minutes during intermission and then getting hit over the head with all 5 Beach Boys plus Jeff singing in perfect harmony really blows the audience away. Talk about tone setting!

I think the slow moving silhouettes of dancing girls that they broadcast over the Jumbo-Tron behind the stage during Do You Wanna Dance doesn't work. It doesn't match the uptempo nature of the song, and is kind of awkward to listen to and watch at the same time.

During Forever, the two 25 year olds I was sitting next to screamed out "Where's Uncle Jessie!?" Apparently in one Full House episode, the writers wrote a storyline where Jessie claimed to have written the song Forever. I never knew that. Luckily for all the hardcore Beach Boys fans in the audience, John Stamos wasn't anywhere to be seen last night.

Overall the show was awesome, and I enjoyed the second night as much as the first. But because the first show at Mohegan Sun was just so perfect, I have a feeling I'll be comparing all future concert to that one for a long time.

Why does Mike let Bruce sing lead on "Wendy". It's really disappointing. I love seeing the video of Mike from the 60s on Wendy. Making all the gestures about the other guy's future being dim etc....

I wish Mike would still do all his silly movements during Fun, Fun, Fun. blasting the radio, walking like an ace, whipping the horse, acting like a wild goose, et cetera.

Great music should never die with the person who created it our put his/her signature on it, I really feel.

Well  Mike could still do those gestures while Bruce sings lead. Would be weird, but could do it. I heard Mike sing lead on Wendy in 1994 and nailed it (still it's a tough one 'cause he has to jump from a high tenor to deep bass).

The shows were incredibly powerful.  Add Some Music with the band around the piano with Brian showed such  synergy that still must exist among them.  At the risk of dividing things along generations, 1960's and 1970's followers were less concerned about any errors, and more concerned that we heard such great classics (our classics) such as Sail On Sailor, Add Some Music, the SMiLE sampling, and I Just Wasn't Made for These Times or Cottonfields, which I think is such a neat song.  Brian sounds great to us.  

I've been getting emails all day from "contemporaries" who were at the show, and who are more than happy with the concerts.  They are delighted with Brian singing so forcefully at the piano.  Most of us aren't looking for perfection.  The effort of the performance, even if there are "mistakes" matters more.  We find the show just perfect.

It is such an emotional experience, perhaps at this point in our lives, having lived alongside Carl's draft woes, as headlines, when we had friends who were also in the same boat, or that whole coming of age, in an age where young people questioned authority.  We didn't call it "audacity" - we just lived it.   :lol  

One thing I found so gripping was seeing the band turn and face the videos when they were doing the Dennis and Carl tributes.  It can not be easy reliving that loss, via the tributes,  night after night.  Frankly, it feels like those few  minutes, are shared grief for those who either appeared physically invincible, as  Dennis' whole persona was all about physicality, as a surfer, a drummer and race car driver and Carl seemed to be spiritually invincible, holding things down and directing the band doing musical direction. And,  with a seemingly endless supply of grace.  For those few minutes, maybe under ten, total, there were tears in those audiences, or at least, profound reflection.  

It can't be easy for guys who were brothers or lived on-the-road as such, to bear that loss.  And it it a way to celebrate that Dennis and Carl, added to that whole "bubble" as David Marks called it, where they can zone in to work together and contribute to the band's dynamic.    JMHO

Aye. I hear ya. 8) I'm just nitpicking to be honest. :hat Both shows were fantastic, and Brian sounded great in both. I just felt like the first night was one of the greatest performances I've seen from any of them, and was kind of going into the second show with the mentality that it might not be as good. But it was excellent.

Nope. I recorded the set list with my phone as the concert was going along. I didn't hear it played the second night, but then again, there's always the small possibility that I could have missed a song. I didn't have my phone out as much as other people in the audience. So it's possible, although unlikely, that I missed it. But I doubt that. This Whole World is my favorite Sunflower track. I'm pretty sure I would remember if they played it, and I'm almost positive that they didn't. But I'm sure they'll bring it back. This Whole World was a huge hit the first night, I can't imagine that they'll take it out for long.

I honestly have no clue what people of my generation listen to these days. I only picked Linkin Park because an upcoming concert of theirs was being advertised at Mohegan. Whenever I ask my friends what they listen to, I usually get responses like "I like all kinds of stuff," or "Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Adelle/Jay-Z." These guys looked like they were into Modern Rock and Roll.

Seriously, people can like whatever they want. I'm not calling that into question. I'm 23 and I love the Beach Boys. Some of my very close friends are into classic rock, and they're all in their early 20s too. But I work on a college campus, and most people I encounter, whenever I tell them I like the Beach Boys, don't even know how to respond. So yes, they are lame.

They're playin' Don't Back Down?  Sweet!!  Hope they play that on 6/1 in Bezerkly.
