I think I'm the smiley smile drunk, but there is probably people here that can drink me under the table.
What's your beer of choice?

Hoegaarden is my favorite, but I like any except for US Macro Brews and IPA's.

Find myself drinking a lot of Guinness nowadays - however, if I can find Meantime Wheat Beer or Duvel in any boozer, I am on it.

Everyone is going to hate me.............Bud is my drink of choice.

I'd say that Guinness is my favorite. I really like the taste of Blue Moon. And there's almost nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold Budweiser after a long day of work! (runs away trying to catch up with over-and-over :lol)

Where's Hoegaarden? I don't think I've seen that anywhere. I'm always trying to find new beers.

I know what you mean! I've never understood the hate for Budweiser, but to each his own.

And definitely pick up some Guinness extra stout next time you're at the store - it's incredibly popular for a reason!

I don't know if you live in the U.S., but my brother told me that the beer at a grocery store has less alcohol percentage then the ones at "Beer & Tobacco" stores. Does anyone know if this is true?

Hoegaarden is lovely stuff, although not the best Wheat Beer imo. Blue Moon is great.... also, try Leffe if you haven't. Rich as hell.

Don't get the hate for Bud either, it's manna from heaven compared to Carling or Fosters or other 'standard' beer. It's a damn sight better than most American beers too (Coors should be illegal), although not as good as Sam Adams. Mmm....

Yeah, and Guinness! Best served in a pint, poured properly, rather than a can or a bottle but IDK how popular it is in the states. I don't know if they do it in America, but the Nigerian export Guinness is something else - 8% or something and incredible.... if rather effective  :lol

Seriously, any beer you have to put a lime in to give it flavour is simply not good beer.

For real!?!? Corona and lime is great! Lovely with a mexican dinner.

@over and over - The beer they sell in grocery stores is mostly generic and is about 4-5% alcohol content. The beers they sell at beer and wine shops are more specialized and some have higher alcohol percentage.

I don't why but I always had trouble drinking Bud. I do like the label but the corn in it just ruins it for me.  Hoegaarden is Belgium and is kind of like Blue Moon if a bit cleaner. Corona is fine to me because it's less sticky or bitter than Bud or Miller. Worst beer I had is probably Schlitz or Busch. Red Dog or Old Milwaukee is really bad.

I'm looking forward to trying that!

I've sampled some great and not-so-great beers, but one that I enjoyed as a surprise first-tasting more than any other was Grimbergen. Duvel is great as a treat. I love Guinness draft when it's done the right way. Hacker-Pschorr, Hoegaarden, several other imports: Great stuff. For domestics, Yuengling Lager was the staple for many years, but when they opened another brewery in Florida, rather than just the original location in Pottsville, PA, the quality of their bottled beer got a bit inconsistent. I switched to Lager cans, and they were a lot more fresh and crisp - that is my go-to budget domestic. For microbrews, the Brooklyn company is great: Their IPA is terrific, one of my favorite higher-alcohol beers. Yards makes a good brew, as does Stoudt's in PA. Harpoon I always thought was a tad overrated, especially in the Boston area where everything from that area is overhyped, including the damn sports teams. But Sam Adams "Cherry Wheat", served at the Sam Adams brew pub when it used to be on Boylston St., was one of the best tasting drafts I have ever had. Delicious. I avoid it in bottles because too many cases I bought have been skunked. Weyerbacher in Easton PA makes this sample pack called "Big Beers", including one called "Blithering Idiot", that will absolutely get you wrecked but you'll enjoy the taste of the beer in the process.

There was one beer I loved which only came in a sample pack case - from a microbrewery - I would buy the case in the Boston area, and this one beer in it was just terrific. Then I bought some after leaving Boston, and it was skunked - and the only way to get this one variety was in the sample case. I wish I could remember more about it - maybe that says a lot about how much i enjoyed that particular brew: It was so good, I can't remember what it was. ;D

My number 1 is Lost Coast's Great White. It's really really good. I'm also quite partial to pretty much anything by Lagunitas. And if I'm just drinking swill, first choice PBR, second Miller High Life.

PBR??? I was waiting for that to show up in this thread... :) Swill is too kind a word to describe that drink.

PBR is much better than the MGDs, Buds, & Coorses that seem to be as equally as popular. Quite an inoffensive taste. Heaters gonna heat.

I used to drink PBR and Rolling Rock constantly with my more hipster friends. PBR has quite the redneck/hipster following in my area. And inoffensive is a good way to put it. Not bad, not great, just right.

Why has Rolling Rock fallen off recently? When I was in school, that was the beer which was a step above the frat beers like Keystone, which were thin as piss and cheap.

MGD was tolerable in the 16oz cans for a cheap buzz that didn't sour the stomach.

The ultimate cheap buzz that tasted good was Haffenreffer Private Stock in the 64oz green bottle. :-D

I used to drink Gösser dark beer, but it's hard to find.

Failing that, Anchor Steam!  Mmmmmmmmm

It's definitely Grolsch for me, especially the Herfstbok (a seasonal beer, only sold in autumn and winter), but the Kanon (= Canon... yes, that name pretty much sums it up  ;D. )

Another great (and strong) beer is Kasteel (and - no - this a not Castle lager).
Other personal favorites: Palm, Hoegaarden, Leffe (Blond, or Triple)

Anyway, some of mine are Hacker Pschorr (the Oktoberfest and Munich Gold), Surly Furious or Surly Cynic, New Belgian Ranger, Brooklyn Lager, Deschutes Inversion, Schell's Firebrick. Generally not a fan of heavier darks, stouts and such. But I'm pretty easy to please: while I feel like I have some decent taste, I'll drink what I'm given without complaint. (Nobody likes a snob ... except himself.)

Speaking of Hoegaardens, I had quite a few last night, as a matter of fact. Not really a go-to, but hit the spot yesterday.

I've had that a few times and loved it.

PS: Thanks, over and over, for making this thread - I've learned of a few more beers I need to try in the next few weeks/months.

...And by a hot summer day with friends and a nice BBQ, I have nothing against a Budweiser or a Corona. I don't get the hate towards those beers - they're good for what they are, that is to say honest, almost "soft" beverages that go well with many kinds of foods but add a refreshing twist to them.

I have a preference for Pilsner Urquell - although it costs a wad, great flavoured brew and always a pleasure - good hot weather gear.

Did I notice some Fosters hate before? Well said, as most big brand Australian beers are completely rooted (beer scented water), although the boutique market is kickin' butt.  A case of ok beer is around $40-45 at the moment!!!

While our (Minnesota) most known current beer is probably Summit's EPA, I highly, highly recommend anyone who can get a Surly Cynic or Furious to do so.

I am terrible when it comes to local beers. Our famous local (central Virginia) brewery is Starr Hill - apparently they make some great beer, but I've never tried it. Perhaps this thread will get me to.

I'll bet you could find Summit in a decent shop. Surly...less likely. It's quite new (<5 years, anyway) and just gaining hold even here.

Thank you. I once tried a few styles of Hoegaarden that were really good but they don't sell them here. I think Grand Cru was one and then the other was Spéciale. I would love to have those again. Leffe and Grolsch are also very good. Like Luther I also like Hacker Pschorr a lot. I've tried about five kinds and they all are great.
Locally I like Two Brothers Monarch Wit and Ebel Weiss.

Same here man. I've really been out of the loop. Some of these beers I've never heard of, but at the end of the day, getting drunk is the goal.  ;D

I've got some New Belgium Dig (pale ale) here today. And with a forecast of sunny and mid-70s, I think it's going to be awfully good with some grilled food. (Eggplant--aubergine for some of you, I suppose--and portabellas with mozzarella and parmesan on a grilled roll.)

Another great ale is Old Peculiar, an English ale, of course.  Not sure if this is still made.  I used to drink it at the Harbor Inn in the Cleveland Flats.

Surly Furious is my favorite IPA.  Being in Chicago, we've missed their kegs for the past 2 years.  Thankfully there are a few online shops that ship!

All Cantillons are quite expensive compared to other beers but they're definitely worth the price. Nice to find another Cantillon enthusiast!  ;)

They don't even see the shelves in Chicago.  Gone in a whisper.  I'm down to one Cantillon in the cellar... but it's an '09 Blabaer!

I'm poor so I usually end up drinking Simpler Times Lager (Trader Joes), PBR, Yuengling Lager Drafts, or High Life tallboys.
I'll occasionally spend the $10 and get a Delirium Nocturnum. That's more of twice a year treat, though.

I just don't understand beer of food elitism. Sometimes a high life or Taco Bell can be more satisfying than their more complex counterparts.

Different strokes for different folks. Sometimes a Katy Perry tune can be more satisfying than a Bach tune.

I rarely do it, because it fodas w/my meds, but I do like a Fat Tire. Which I often mispronounce as Flat Tire.

You know you can find some good low priced beer. Trader Joe's is very decent.

If there was one nearby, I'd drink far more Trader Joe's Simpler Times than I do. Unfortunately the nearest one is a little over an hour away. I tend to leave TJ's with stockpiles of their peanut butter, junk food, and alcohol. I've had a few condescending stares.

Terrapin and Sweetwater are also local to here, so I'll occasionally catch a good drink special. I feel that both are overrated, though.

Being drunk is so amazing! It just makes life better imo. I know some people are sober or abuse it and make bad decisions. But if your a nice and responsible drinker like me, it is so great.

I've always like Guiness in a bottle, but never the draft. Out at a restaurant/brew pub last night I had their Chocolate Stout. It was very tasty! But I woke up with a headache this morning after only one beer. Maybe I can't drink beer anymore....

Just got day drunk off of Simpler Times since I'll be busy later today. I'm sitting here blaring 'Pet Sounds' and it occurred to me that i've never listened to this album intoxicated before. So good.

For the britishes here, there is nothing finer than drinking spanish beer with good company iin our newly arrived summer. San Miguel in copious quantities with good company bringing it. Very happy. (Despite a proper job interview in the morning....) Mahalo to you all on this fine board.

San Miguel is my favorite, too; it's a Phillipine beer It goes so well with cheese enchiladas.

I have about ten more sitting in the fridge, so I will test this theory at the opportune moment...

I just had my first Guinness draught in a bottle. You guys are right, Guinness is much better than any beer I've ever had in my life. I wish I could afford to drink it everyday like I do with bud, but I can't  :(

Quite fond of wheat beers, one of my favourites being Paulaner.
If I had to choose between American beers, I would actually go for Coors Light. That one is great in the warmth of the sun.

I love beer..  not as much as I love scotch, but there's nothing better in the summertime (except for perhaps Crabbe's ginger beer mmmm).  I can drink most beers as long as they aren't too "hoppy"   I love Guiness, quite like Corona and Grolsh, but favourites are the local beers here at Sail and Anchor and Little Creatures (pale ale)

I have a German housemate, who I hoped would bring some different beers into the house.. alas!  he has the worst taste in beer I've ever come across.. He drinks Aussie Emu Export (mud) and XXXX,  in fact the cheaper it is the more he guzzles it.  blech, rather not drink at all.

Sam Adams Octoberfest has a great after taste.

My best friend lives in Germany (his wife is a career army nurse) and he was miserable and swearing to leave his wife and move back to Los Angeles when one morning he finds a six pack of a assorted German beers on his door step with a "welcome to the neighborhood" note from the local door to door BEER DELIVERY SERVICE!!!!!

He is now in love with Germany :)

Gösser beer, from Austria, is a great one.  A sweet, very dark beer!

I'm getting quite into American Craft Beer atm, but as a mere British man my selections are limited. I do enjoy a bottle of Goose Island IPA, Blue Moon (really fucking nice Wheat Beer), the omnipresent Brooklyn Lager and I had a pint of some San Francisco craft that was so nice, but at £7 a pint my bank manager should have called me up and asked whether someone had stolen my card.

Well my local (here in Berkeley UK) does a rather nice 'Bud' on draught , got to say (don't know what lager it was) that the Lager we had on the boat (with all the German Lads) before/after after and after the Berlin gig was rather refreshing  :lol
