Title: Phil Cohen
Post by: Autotune on May 10, 2012, 07:16:24 PM
Could somebody kindly explain what the problem with this person is?
I (voluntarily) skipped the hundreds of TSS discussion pages, but I understand this has to do with it.
But why so much hatred towards a person that seems not to be doing anything to anyone?

Essentially, Mr Cohen has spent the last year or so *insisting*:
That the Smile Sessions box wouldn't come out at all
That the reunion wouldn't happen at all
That there would definitely be no reunion album

He appears to have a personal grudge against Capitol records, and has claimed over and over that they're messing things up, not promoting things properly, announcing projects that they then decide won't happen, and so on. He was still insistent a few days ago, for example, that the new album wouldn't be ready for June 6. This is *after* Amazon had the album up for preorder with that as the release date, it had been announced as the release date in the press, a TV special had been scheduled for a couple of days before, and so on.

No amount of evidence appears sufficient to convince him that it is even *possible* that anything could *possibly* go right, and he keeps insisting that X will never happen, where X is the latest good thing to be firmly announced, right up until the point at which it does happen, when he moves on to the next thing.

Full moon tonight, everything's all right
Baby come on back to Phil Cohen
If you want yourself a day man, well I don't mind
You just ditch him when the sun goes down
'Cause the moon shines bright
and everything's all right
When the Cohen, he creeps into town

Now you maybe want a man who throws round his money
But he ain't as cool as Phil Cohen.
And you might want yourself a man
who don't act so funny
But he ain't your fool like Phil Cohen

You maybe think you know what love is about girl
But it's nothing 'til it's  Phil Cohen
And everybody knows, you go round and shout it
That your only thrill is Phil Cohen

Full moon tonight, everything's all right
Baby come on back to Phil Cohen
I may miss your loving while I'm on my back
But you can't escape from Phil Cohen
You can't do this to me

Look me in the eyes baby, now you cut that jive,
You know Cohen's just about the number one cat alive!
You got my great big eyes spinning round in my head
How could you love another man instead?

Release dates are never changed, nor are they ever announced months ahead of time to build anticipation and for promotional purposes.

People give him sh*t because he's like Eeyore, except he's not cute nor cudly like Eeyore is.

I'm telling you Lenny, that's exactly what it is, it's a perfect metaphor.

People are bullies and like to single out someone who doesn't fit in.

Phil made himself a target over time.

Look, when Al first let slip that the Smile Sessions were coming out, my initial reaction was "I'll believe it when I see it". I'm sure I was not the only one who thought this. However as the weeks progressed and other band members, the record label, the media and certain insiders gave us very positive insight into the upcoming project, we as a fan community became delighted that an imminent release was forthcoming... All except Phil who insisted that it wasn't going to happen - even up to the point of Amazon accepting preorders.

The final straw was when Phil demanded that AGD spill any inside information he may have on a public message board, just to satisfy his own unfounded insecurities!!

In Phil's defence he has never resorted to attacking people on line with name calling or threats and has remained a gentleman, albeit a absurdly pessimistic one.

Phil had a habit of presuming to speak for the fan community. Therefore his frustration became our frustration; his problem with the label became ours. He called for a boycott of Beach Boys product in the hope of, erm, forcing the label to release information about the upcoming SMile release.

Never was content to wait it out like the rest of us.

I take exception to being told what to think - to being told what I'm thinking in fact - and to act in ways I've no interest in doing.

Read the threads though, don't take our word for it as we're all bullies.

This Phil Cohen stuff is becoming very tiresome. Over the course of several months of posts, it's become quite obvious to me that Phil is just putting on an act. The more annoyed and downright pissed off people get, the more he puts on his act. People fall into his trap time and time again, and it just eggs him on even more. He feeds on our comtempt for him. The funny thing is, if everybody just ignored every single post he makes, he would most likely get bored enough to leave.

but now mere mention of his name has become a running gag. and our ever pleasant Andrew G. Doe has a particular grudge against him and AGD's mentions of Cohen have outnumbered the amount of negative posts that Cohen has made.

True. I wasn't going to be the one to bring Andrew's name into it, though.  :lol

I'm a n00b so what do I know? Having said that...

I don't see what the problem with him is. He's only expressing his opinion (even, though, yes he is IMO overly critical of Capitol records and in general is pretty negative), he's not attacking or insulting other board members or doing anything I'd consider rude or unacceptable. The worst part about having him around is that whenever he makes one of his comments a whole thread gets derailed for a few pages while other people tear his post apart (and often insult him on a personal level), but that's the fault of the people who take the bait and respond, not his.

Phil’s a nice guy, resolutely so. People have harshly attacked him and he has not once wavered from being completely civil. It’s baffling that people allow themselves to get so upset by his incredulity. If you think he’s crazy, ignore him; it should be easy if he’s saying the same thing over and over. Meanwhile, a lot of people kiss the ass of a dick. A dick that calls more attention to Phil Cohen than Phil Cohen himself.

By the way, next month, there's going to be a reissue of "Sounds of Summer" with an added T-shirt. Is that the "commemorative" product Capitol spoke of? What a letdown. But as I have said, if the archival products that many hoped for(or even the 50-song hits compilation that Mr.Doe hinted at) don't materialize, I won't be broken hearted. At least we did get "Smile".

I kind of wanted to put this in the Made in California box set thread, but figured that would just be stirring the pot.  Seems like Phil let himself get pulled in over the last 9 months ...
