Title: Do you think "You Still Believe in Me" was directly influenced by "In My Life?"
Post by: Al Jardine: Pick Up Artist on May 04, 2012, 08:03:58 PM
I was listening to Rubber Soul the other day, and while listening to the track "In My Life," it hit me like a ton of bricks. YSBM is Brian's response to it. Think about it. Melancholy lyrics. Slowish, nostalgic feel. YSBM was originally titled "In My Childhood," which looks like a glaring reference. What is your opinion?

Never even thought of it, but when I read the title of this post it clicked. Makes sense.

Are the first two notes the same?

Edit: I can play In My Life on my guitar, I think the melody goes C#, A... C#, D, E, F#.

I've never played the melody on You Still Believe in Me, somebody help me out.

No, YSBIN wasn't directly or undirectly influenced by "In My Life", not by any song on RUBBER SOUL, at least not musicially.

Why?

"In My Childhood" was recorded November 1, 1965.

RUBBER SOUL was released December 3, 1965.

Ok, the lyrics came later.

My favourite response to a Beatles song is "It Ain't Me Babe", Dylan's response to "She Love's You" The "No No No" melody is "Yeah Yeah Yeah"

The backing track is unrelated to The Beatles in any way and really follows the funfair influence that you get on the California Girls intro.  The vocal melody sounds like something Mike improvised on the piano with single notes, as shown by the fact that the intro was recorded by plucking the strings.

Another difference is that I think Lennon wrote the lyrics before Macca helped him with the tune, whereas lyrics are last with Brian.

For a long time, I thought it was influenced by Darlene Love's "Strange Love", but I just found out that that song was unreleased until 1991 when it came out on the Spector Back To Mono box. How the hell do you have a song that good and not release it!? Baffling.

Strange Love was on The Wall of Sound Vol. 5, Rare Masters, which is a (not-bootleg) vinyl compilation from the mid-70s, and one of the most incredible  records.  It's indeed unbelievable how much incredible material phil spector didn't release in the 60s - and your point of course still stands.

Thanks for correcting me. I always thought Rare Masters was a bootleg since it has that crazy bootleg-y name. Good to know!

The "No No No", is the same melody as "Yeah Yeah Yeah", not the whole song.

In your defence it's a different chord pattern underneath though, which can affect how you hear a melody.
