Surprised that "Please let me Wonder" isn't there. And where's "Kokomo"??? Just kiddin'. "Surf's Up" at #1 is great. Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Ovi on April 26, 2012, 07:21:19 AM Pretty good list, except maybe for 'Barbara Ann'.
#1 and #2 are the exact same as my two top favourites. Thanks for sharing. Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Liamo on April 26, 2012, 08:21:42 AM Decent list from a decent magazine, but Bruce gets as many entries as Dennis! Would have included Slip on Through or Little Bird at least
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: PongHit on April 26, 2012, 08:27:06 AM Interesting to see the European perspective. Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: cablegeddon on April 26, 2012, 08:32:43 AM They missed Kiss me baby...and I would put Kokomo on that list :p
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Lowbacca on April 26, 2012, 08:35:28 AM Here's Mojo magazines Top 50 Beach Boys tracks. What'd you think? PLMW belongs in any top50 list. Apart from that... BA? TITM? LDC? ICHM? Don't know about those in a top50 list. Well, at least CUDDLE UP is in there, and a few other awesome album cuts.1. SURF'S UP 2. GOOD VIBRATIONS 3. GOD ONLY KNOWS 4. CALIFORNIA GIRLS 5. FOREVER Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Cabinessenceking on April 26, 2012, 11:09:24 AM I'm surprised that The Night Was So Young, I Bet He's Nice, Johnny Carson or Had To Phone Ya are not on the list. They all beat anything by Bruce.
Otherwise I think the list is rather well done, perhaps too heavy on PS and Smile? I wouldnt put Let Us Go Away For Awhile in the top 20, nor would many other! Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Justin on April 26, 2012, 11:14:39 AM That's a pretty great list and I'm glad they weren't afraid to go for the deeper cuts. "Cuddle Up"? "Wind Chimes (Smiley Smile version)?" They get brownie points for those. You compare that to a list made by a magazine based here in the US like Rolling Stone and it'd probably be completely different (and not in a good way).
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Chocolate Shake Man on April 26, 2012, 11:54:02 AM Interesting list but you can almost hear the affected and self-conscious discussions when they decided they were going to put every Pet Sounds song on the list. I mean that almost has to be something decided on in advance.
The order is really strange, for my own personal tastes. It's odd to me that someone would consider Wouldn't It Be Nice only the fourth best song on Pet Sounds, and Sloop John B. the second worst (I feel that that comes as a reaction to the age-old misconception that the song wasn't supposed to be on the album). Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: lance on April 26, 2012, 11:56:52 AM Pretty good. If it gets peope listening to something a bit more obscure I'm stoked. Of course tehre are a handful I might take off and replace with something different. And I'd probably put in my room higher.
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Smilin Ed H on April 26, 2012, 12:24:58 PM I could think of ten or twelve things I'd like to add, but I don't think any of these aren't great.
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: EgoHanger1966 on April 26, 2012, 12:35:00 PM This is a very die-hard centered list, though. Not an accurate representation of anything at all (IMO). I mean, you have to be REALLY into the BB's to put Do You Like Worms? on a top 50 list!

Why is That's Not Me always considered to be the worst song on Pet Sounds? Because it has a significant Mike Love lead? That's Not Me is great! Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: The Shift on April 26, 2012, 12:47:50 PM I'm surprised that The Night Was So Young, I Bet He's Nice, Johnny Carson or Had To Phone Ya are not on the list. PS and SMiLE account for the bulk of the top 25 alone. Why is That's Not Me always considered to be the worst song on Pet Sounds? Because it has a significant Mike Love lead? That's Not Me is great! I don't think that's the reason. But while I do like That's Not Me, there is seemingly less going on with it than on other tracks -- it has a fairly simple set up, instrumentally. In that sense, it seems to fit the least with the Pet Sounds aesthetic. Lyrically and vocally though it fits in perfectly. Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on April 26, 2012, 03:23:18 PM My own thoughts:
Every single Pet Sounds track in the top 50? Yes it's their seminal album, but this shows a somewhat limited imagination doesn't it, especially as... There's NO tracks from side two of Today! included, at all. No Please Let Me Wonder. No Kiss Me Baby. No She Knows Me Too Well. Are these list compilers even Beach Boy fans?? According to this list, the best track on Sunflower is.... Tears In The Morning. It ranks higher than Cool Cool Water and Forever (This Whole World doesn't feature at all!) Dennis is utterly sidelined - he only just manages a single track in the top 40 (bearing in mind Bruce has two!!) A very unusual list then, which somehow manages to be surprising but unimaginative at the same time. Still, it's still great to see such a big feature on the BB's in such a highly regarded music magazine, and on the cover too (pity Brian's face has been weirdly-photoshopped though). Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on April 27, 2012, 12:18:22 AM Mojo asked for Beach Boys fans to let them know what song(s) they should've included but didn't. Email at: mojo@bauermedia.co.uk (keep it brief)
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Dunderhead on April 27, 2012, 12:29:04 AM Good list, but it lacks personality.
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: stack-o-tracks on April 27, 2012, 01:07:24 AM Mojo asked for Beach Boys fans to let them know what song(s) they should've included but didn't. Email at: mojo@bauermedia.co.uk (keep it brief) Everybody send them an email and tell them Kokomo, Everyone's In Love With You and the '79 version of Here Comes The Night should not have been excluded. Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: Dunderhead on April 27, 2012, 01:41:07 AM Here's something like my top 25. Doesn't match up that well with Mojos...
Time To Get Alone I Went To Sleep Slip On Through Let's Go Away For Awhile Good To My Baby I Can Hear Music Little Bird I Just Wasn't Made For These Times Be With Me I Know There's An Answer Girl Don't Tell Me Anna Lee Airplane 'Til I Die The Trader Busy Doin' Nothing Just Once In My Life All I Wanna Do Leaving This Town Don't Talk Funky Pretty Little Pad Break Away Add Some Music Surf's Up Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: phirnis on April 27, 2012, 02:11:25 AM Tears in the Morning but no Roller Skating Child? Oh please! :)
Title: Re: Mojo Top 50 Post by: lance on April 27, 2012, 04:50:29 AM Definitely Tears in the Morning is the first to go in my fantasy correction of this so-called list.
