Post by: Newguy562 on April 16, 2012, 07:00:22 PM
I know some of you won't care much for this thread...the beatles are hugely recognized as the best to ever do it in rock & roll..
i'm curious to know what song by them is considered the most known/most popular they did? there's so many flowing through my mind it 's impossible for me to name just one.

Yesterday is the one covered the most, but so many are popular. It's just hard to make a statement like that about anyone with more than one hit.

Yeah, I'd say Let It Be. That doesn't make it the best by an incredibly huge margin, mind.

As far as radio goes I would say Revolution and Hey Jude because they're played on both oldies stations and classsic rock stations.

My mum and I did a pilgrimage to Liverpool August last year as we both love the Beatles (and my grandmother was born there)   One of the best moments of my life was being in the Cavern (not the exact same one, but next to it) it was full of tourists from all over the world and they had a guy singing Beatles songs,  he asked everyone what they wanted and it was almost unanimously Hey Jude.  Being there with my mum with everyone singing Hey Jude at the top of their lungs was something I'll never forget.

It depends on what year you're asking this question.

At one point in the mid-60s, I'd say "She Loves You" was  the song everyone knew by the Beatles (the "yeah, yeah, yeah" refrain is referenced constantly in pop culture at this time). By the late-60s, "Yesterday" was probably the most recognizable due to the many cover versions that had come out. By the early-to-mid 70s, I think "Eleanor Rigby" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were identified as being what the Beatles were all about. Today, it's likely that "Here Comes The Sun", "Let It Be", "Hey Jude", "A Little Help From My Friends" or "A Hard Day's Night" are the most recognizable Beatles tracks.

Personally, "A Day In The Life" remains the track...but "Paperback Writer" isn't far behind.

According to last.fm (which if you don't know is a social network type site that monitors what music you play if you sign up, and then suggests more music you might like), the top 15 Beatles tracks among its listeners are, in order:
1
Come Together
2
Here Comes the Sun
3
Let It Be
4
Yesterday
5
Help!
6
Something
7
Eleanor Rigby
8
All You Need Is Love
9
Yellow Submarine
10
Hey Jude
11
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
12
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
13
Can't Buy Me Love
14
A Hard Day's Night
15
Get Back

2,787,827 of last.fm's members have listened to at least one Beatles song, so it's probably a large enough sample to say that those are roughly right, at least for last.fm's demographic, which appears roughly to be 16-35 years old and slightly more female than male.

(In comparison, 1,763,739 people had listened to the Beach Boys, and their top 15 is Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations,I Get Around, Sloop John B, California Girls, You Still Believe In Me, That's Not Me, Barbara Ann, Kokomo, Surfin' U.S.A., I'm Waiting for the Day, Heroes and Villains, Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder), I Know There's an Answer )
