Some things are just too good to be hidden in that thread.

Any video of Tues Dodgers appearance will be front and center on the 'General On Topic Discussion' site I suspect, however board admin may think otherwise.

I don't see them as being hidden, tho; they're easy to find, one just has to look.

I posted this in the YouTube thread, but it might as well go here too. I wonder when that Carl Wilson clip came from? I would give a semi-educated guess and say 1994. Carl seemed to be really struggling to hit some of the higher notes. Perhaps he was just having an off day. Other than the 1977-78 period, you rarely hear or see a film or recording of Carl not sounding his best. Even in the few recordings I've heard from 1997, he still sounded amazing

Made my day. Thank you.

And thank you Carl for singing it so well in 1966 that it was released with your voice on lead and making this truly beautiful song your own.

Off day?  Are you serious? It's 1993. In 1994 he was coloring his beard.

I'd go earlier on the date of that performance, around 1990, based on Carl's physical appearance.

But -- wow!! What a find!!

Thats fantastic. wow.

I didn't realize though Carl  had to sing falsetto on this song. Always thought his voice was higher.  Unless its just  age?    That of course takes nothing away from Carls talent.

yeah, could be around 1990/91. I should have simply said pre-94

Oh thats right,  he smoked like a factory.   with all the stress, probably needed to.   The more and more i find out about what  really went on,  I have no idea how they did it.

And for Carl to do this,  it had to be bad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE9xv-VcH3w

Finding out Dennis was homeless after the Holland (financial) disaster and and how much they must of lost by BUILDING A STUDIO in Holland and the record being rejected.   Man.
I am sure they made it up by heavy touring.  But still.  I think the Beatles fights are nothing to the Beach Boys problems.   Watching let it be (and the outtakes), I have seen much heavier fighting
in bands i have been in. :) :)   But, I know, i wasn't there.

Glad I got out of the music business early in life.

I think it has to do with not having warmed-up his voice for this. Or maybe this was during the morning. Or he had a sore-throat. I heard him sing efortlessly his high and soft part in Under the Boardwalk. Now singing that is difficult as hell, and nailed it every single time. Same with his other leads.

A relative of mine was classmates with Carl and he said as young as 14 or 15 years old he would come into class reeking of cigarettes. He definitely smoked long enough to have his teeth stained.

Why are we even talking about this? It's not like the way his teeth look detract from the beautiful performance we're very lucky to be able to watch.

This doesn't seem to be an actual Beach Boys show. The only member of the group I see is Carl. Also, note the absence of a lot of the backing vocals near the end.

Carl certainly got better looking with age. As a pudgy, bearded man, it gives me hope. I just wish he hadn't started buttoning the top buttons on his collared shirts. That never looks good without a tie, and is only fashionable in certainly parts of Utah and Colorado.

The Wilson brothers knew what was up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIYFmG7HbBc Compared to Mike & Bruce. I'm so glad that terrible decade is over and here in 2012 we don't have to witness Bruce wearing tiny shorts dancing behind his keyboard.

Perhaps I'm blind but I don't see that something would be wrong with his teeth here.
When I was 15 I had classmates with much darker teeth then Carl here.

What I really wanted to post: Great performance!

Not trying to get off topic and turn this thread into talk about Carl's dental history, but earlier in the thread somebody had made a comment about his teeth. I personally don't think they look too bad, but it makes sense that they might be stained from years of tobacco use regardless if he had stopped smoking years before the video was filmed since he apparently smoked from a young age. Smoking obviously had more deleterious effects on his health, but again, that's not what the thread is about.

BEAUTIFUL performance. I wish somebody would come forward with information about where and when it was filmed. It's truly a shame that his voice will not be present during the 2012 tour because after Brian's disinterest and Dennis' passing, he was the only shining light in a sea of mediocrity.

Probably not a big factor, but that's a really sh*tty mic he's singing through in that video.

Nice catch. Yeah, doesn’t appear to be the industry standard SM-58 mic. The event is clearly some sort of wedding-type function with a presumably nice but still modest (compared to a “real” concert) setup. The whole thing is actually kind of surreal. Carl singing an amazing song in an intimate setting; we’re watching on an intimately-shot video, yet there are banquet/catering dudes in the background milling around getting ready to pull out the spiral-cut ham or whatever it is they had going on back there.

I know a lot of people understandably would like to see the whole “set”, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Carl didn’t do a lot of songs. May have been a quick setup for the small band to do a few songs. It would be interesting to know how much they played, and how much Carl was involved in their set.

Except for the Australia gigs in the 70s I think every other video/audio of GOK is absolutely flawless. That is such an amazing thing if you think about it. Carl just had something that made every performance great. Yes his voice was angelic but it's the passion that makes it reach another level.

I think he sounds absolutely fantastic! Playing for the chefs might not have been exactly inspiring, but we need to realize just how easy it ISN'T to sing such a song perfectly each and every time. When singing, each little emotion one feels in the moment can dictate where the notes go. It takes intense concentration to pull anything off 100% like the record every time.

What was this for, BTW? Did Brian drag Carl along to some restaurant as his personal entertainment while he scarfed down steaks and cake?

Thank you for all the comments. The performance took place at a private function and I would like to keep it that way. This was the only song Carl performed. I feel blessed to have been there and I can't say enough about what a nice person he was.

Agreed. I've always marvelled at Carl's unique guitar chord shapes, particularly the way he transitions from D to Bm6.

Billy Hinche, Carls ex brother in law was playing at the grand opening of one of Dennis' sons restaurants Carl stopped in and played just this one song.Having met Carl several times I for one can tell you he was a very humble and sweet man. I've been watching this YouTube video for going on three years now, and I doubt I'll ever grow weary of it.  It's beautiful and, at the same time, sad.  I simply can't watch this man perform that song in that setting without coming to the sudden and sad realization that the passing of Carl Wilson effectively signaled the end of the Beach Boys.

I was fortunate (and blessed) to have my daughter surprise me at her wedding in 11/12 with this as our father/daughter dance.  Only 100 people at the reception in a small setting, but the entire place sang the sang as we danced.  Shortly after the wedding, I found this You Tube link and listen to it quite often.  So neat reading everyone's posts about Carl.  Yes we lost a fine fine gentleman.
