Title: Setlist thoughts...
Post by: Andrew G. Doe on April 08, 2012, 11:18:04 AM
Firstly, the cast-iron certainties:

Good Vibrations
I Get Around
Help Me Rhonda
Kokomo
California Girls
God Only Knows
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Sloop John B
Surfin' USA
Surfer Girl
Little Deuce Coupe
Catch A Wave
Heroes And Villains
Fun, Fun, Fun
Barbara-fucking-Ann
Rock And Roll Music
Do It Again
In My Room
Surfer Girl
Don't Worry, Baby
Darlin'
409
Surfin' Safari
track from the new album - "Radio", probably

Highly likely...
When I Grow Up...
Shut Down
Be True...
Good Timin'
Wild Honey
Sail On, Sailor
I Can Hear Music
Getcha Back
The Little Girl I Once Knew
Let Him Run Wild
Break Away
California Dreamin'

The 'signature' songs:
Disney Girls
Then I Kissed Her
Caroline, No
Why Do Fools Fall In Love
(one for David)

That's 41 without any deep cuts - add two 'tribute' songs and you're up to 43. "Their Hearts..." will be 44. "TWOTS" makes 45.

Any more suggestions ?

I wouldn't file "R&R Music" under "cast-iron certainties". And "California Dreamin'" as highly likely? Have Mike & Bruce been playing this regularly?

There will be more than one song with David on lead (maybe two or three, I hope) in the general repertoire. Mike will be singing lead on most of the faster stuff, obviously, so there might be a few more songs included for Brian to take the lead on (than the ones you have suggested). What comes to mind is stuff like PLMW, ASMTYD or "Marcella".

General additions: "Salt Lake City" and "All Summer Long" - those I think are also highly likely.

Oh, and let's hope that they drop "Kokomo" for a few shows.  :P

There's already a thread about the very same subject:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,12291.0.html (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,12291.0.html)

They played it when i saw them last July at Epsom Downs, although it was dedicated 'to British weather'

Oh, that corny Beach Boys concert humour.  ;D I hope Mike's having a good day in Berlin in August.

But yeah, I doubt they'll be playing "California Dreamin'". It's not a Beach Boys song (despite the 80's cover version), and this reunion is all about the Beach Boys legacy.

Gimme most of that list, and then make sure to include "Please Let Me Wonder", "This Whole World", and maybe something like "Cool, Cool Water" would be a cool surprise. And maybe to open this second set after an intermission with something like "I Went to Sleep" would be cool to start things slowly before going into a rockin' song.

The setlist ought to be based on the best vocal work that they can do today given their ages and what they have left in the tank with their voices.  I doubt Mike Love is up to singing lead vocal on most songs the way he used to, but Al Jardine can.  Maybe David Marks can contribute some too.

They've played it every time I've seen them since about 2003, and that includes in the States.

I'm not even going to include hits because it's obvious that's what 95% of the set will be.

It's OK
You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Johnny Carson
Ding Dang 20 minute extended jam
The Night Was So Young
I Know There's An Answer (Hang On To Your Ego would be better tho)
Gettin' Hungry
This Whole World
All I Wanna Do
CHUG-A-LUG
Wonderful
Surf's Up
She Knows Me Too Well
Country Air
Here Comes The Night (disco version)

If I get a chance to meet the band before a show I'm going to beg them for some Love You material.

One should hope they'll mix it up a bit , then, and leave it at home. personally I don't care a bit, as they're not playing here, but for the unlucky souls who will otherwiset have to sit thru a standard BBs set, I hope they'll play at least 6 songs from their "new" release.( probably just going to be TWGMTR, DIA, and 8 or 9 other reworked older songs)

Sure Mike's up to singing lead vocal on most songs he used to.  ??? See recent Mike&Bruce shows. Al will sing lead on the signature Al Jardine songs: "Rhonda", "Then I Kissed Her", "Sloop John B." (maybe shared lead vocal with Brian), perhaps "Cotton Fields" etc.

I still think my original guess is going to be pretty close:

Repeating my earlier guess:

California Girls
Sloop John B
Do It Again
Break Away
Come Go With Me
In My Room
Little Deuce Coupe
God Only Knows *
I Can Hear Music (Jeff) *
Do You Wanna Dance (Bruce) *
Forever (David) *
Heroes And Villains
Wouldn't It Be Nice (Jeff?)
Disney Girls
Sail On Sailor (David)
Rock And Roll Music
Cotton Fields
I Get Around
Don't Worry Baby (Jeff)
Darlin'
Surfer Girl
Help Me Rhonda
Kokomo
Surfin' USA
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring (or Graduation Day, or Our Prayer, etc.)
Good Vibrations
Barbara Ann
Fun, Fun, fun

...Along with a small number of new songs (including the new single, obviously) to plug the new album.

* "Tribute" portion of the show

And as evidence seems to point in that direction, probably TLGIOK & TWOTS.
I also think "Surf's Up" could be possible too.  Wouldn't it be...great to see all five guys doing the different parts in the tag?!

Would love to see Brian leads on PLMW and Caroline No! Gotta toss Bruce a few Disney Girls and DWD maybe Wendy. I would say David gets 1 lead.  I hope Al gets a fair share of leads here as his voice is the best.  Rhonda, Then I Kissed Her, Honkin , Cal Saga maybe? You're  So Good To Me, Sloop, Heroes shared with Brian.
I'm REALLY hoping they can Why Do Fools Fall in Love?? REALLY hoping! Randall Kirsch sings it and he's likely not in the reunion band so maybe we can lose it.
Not sure about Wild Honey ( who would sing it?) or Getcha Back. Mike hasn't sung that live in years so who would sing that?

I think so too.
Like "God Made The Radio" it has a Mafia-connection. It was written the day JFK was killed. So the BB were already in touch with the Mafia in 1963.
Another song they'll perform for sure is "Good Vibrations", can't wait to see both Mike & Brian doing their hand choreographies during the chorus.
As mentioned before, "California Saga Pt. 3", what else?
"Do It Again", "Barbara Ann"

Why do people think that they would end the show with Love & Mercy? That is a Brian solo signature song, if there ever was one, with which he has ended most of his solo shows for a decade! There is no way that will happen. There's no need for it to happen either.

Mike?
How 'bout Carl?
He led the band for a couple decades with that as an encore. I think the tag lending itself to endless repeat made sense as a concert ending.

I agree it would be a kick-ass way to start a show. However, they've usually favored medium tempo songs as starters.

Title: Re: Setlist thoughts...
Post by: HeyJude on April 09, 2012, 07:27:40 AM
I think the main factors in actually guessing an accurate setlist (as opposed to just naming our own personal favorite songs) would be:

1.   The Obvious Hits – This will account for the majority of the setlist

2.   Recent “Non-Regulars” that Brian and Mike (and Al) have performed in the last few years – This would be stuff that we didn’t necessarily hear commonly at a BB show in, say, the 90’s, but aren’t necessarily totally out of left field, stuff like “When I Grow Up”, “Good Timin’”, “The Little Girl I Once Knew”, etc.

3.   Lead Vocal Features – Songs included more to feature specific lead vocalists. For Bruce, the obvious guess would be “Disney Girls.”

I would imagine there will be something that seems an obvious choice that they will leave out, and probably at least something that seems slightly surprising as a pick. I could picture them doing “Add Some Music To Your Day” since it’s a good pick for multiple lead vocalists, and Brian has done in solo. Same could go for something like “Forever” as a Dennis tribute perhaps. Maybe “Good Timin’” for Carl.

I would guess the setlist will skew more towards Brian’s setlists since it’s largely his band performing. While Mike would likely insist on doing “Kokomo”, I wouldn’t be surprised if they drop stuff like “Rock and Roll Music” and maybe even “Be True to Your School.” That’s my wishful thinking anyway.

I would hope they would dispense with most of the covers. Maybe “Then I Kissed Her” since it’s a good Al vocal. But I could do without “Rock and Roll Music”, “Come Go With Me”, “Do You Wanna Dance”, and certainly covers that weren’t ever even on BB albums, like “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” or “Surf City.”

Another random thought: I think we’re less likely to get songs in the setlist that Carl sang that Brian has never done on solo tours. I don’t think they’re going to be handing lead vocals to non-BB’s (other than partial lead vocals for falsetto parts, like “When I Grow Up”), so stuff like “I Can Hear Music” or “Wild Honey” seems less likely for this reason.

i don't get where mike got the thought that "fun fun fun" is a good ending track.  it's a great first song!

Mike?
How 'bout Carl?
He led the band for a couple decades with that as an encore. I think the tag lending itself to endless repeat made sense as a concert ending.

I agree it would be a kick-ass way to start a show. However, they've usually favored medium tempo songs as starters.

I'm gonna say mike since he just said it lol

No way. We need more ammo for The Best Of Mike Love, part 2.

There's not enough Mike Love leads in most of these set lists. We're just gonna need to hope for some more obscure songs with Love on the lead IMO! Because he'll want to sing a lot of leads I bet.

p.s. I just said "lead(s)" a lot.

Wouldn't make it to the end of the 24th.  ;D

Probably not. :-D
Another great idea comes to mind: Why not performing the complete discography in a marathon concert? That would please everybody and would get them in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Honestly, I don't care that much about what they play, it's great enough that they do a tour together.

I really hope the setlist isn't too Mike centric.....that is one of the major causes of the decline in the BB live act in the 90's. I know Mike will probably get more leads than the other because he sang more but I do hope it's balanced and not the 25 Mike, 3 Al, 2 Carl specials they were pulling by 95.

Lol I hate that the band refuses to acknowledge that Surfs Up is the reason they had a "rebirth" in the 70's

Come on guys, swollow the bad vibrations and play the damn song.

IMO "Surf's Up" is not only their greatest song, but the best rock era song period.

It is a shame that it has not been performed by the group snce 1972.

It is a shame that 85% of the people who will attend the shows are probably unaware of the song's existence.  Kind of like a Beatle's fan being unaware of "A Day in the Life" or a Springsteen fan being unaware of "New York Seranade" or a Colts fan being unaware of Johnny U.

In an alternate universe Mike Love's RRHOF speech goes something like this - "I know we have not always gotten along but we here we are so all you other people getting inducted can f*** off becasue we did "Surf's Up" and you didn't and even if you wanted to you couldn't unless you could raise Mozart and Bach and bring them into your group."  Then, when the furor dies down , bob Dylan shrugs his shoulders and says - "he might be a grade a ahole, but he's right.

I think "All I Wanna Do" would be a really nice example of a good obscure song that Mike could still do leads on. Man, I would love that.

I do agree that we're probably less likely to get songs that had a signature vocal from Carl/Dennis. I don't think they'd give the lead to a BB band member who isn't a real Beach Boy, but maybe Brian or David or one of them could do it?

I really want to hear Bruce do Disney Girls. I'm hoping for a variety either way. David said it'll be the hits, and by that I hope he means the biggest ones and not ALL of the hits. Though, they could play Summer In Paradise in its entirety and leave town and I would still be happy I got to see them play together with my own two eyes.

Another thing to keep in mind concerning the setlist is that, if the report that rehearsals start on the 15th is correct, then that is not a huge amount of rehearsal time to learn a lot of non “meat and potatoes” songs. Granted, Brian’s band can pick up anything pretty quickly most likely, and the actual BB’s mainly need to rehearse the vocals. Perhaps the backing band will be rehearsing before the BB’s get there (some bands have done this, such as Paul McCartney’s band), and I can only imagine the BB’s have started to formulate a basis for a setlist prior to the actual rehearsals starting. But I don’t see a hugely expansive setlist outside of the norm forming with only about nine days of rehearsals at the most.

It’ll be interesting!

Brian's band hasn't rehearsed for years. True fact.

Nine days will be more than enough time.

They won't need that much in the way of rehearsals -- both bands know all the core songs and have been playing them regularly. There's also a second group of songs that both bands have played, albeit not necessarily as regularly -- stuff like Til I Die, Here Today, You Still Believe In Me, Forever, Good Timin', Heroes & Villains.

If everyone knows the material, nine days will be more than ample. As a comparison (and I know people got annoyed when I brought them up before, but...)  last year's Monkees tour was organised very much on the same lines -- a band that hadn't performed together in ten years, with a large backing band consisting of almost every member of one of the solo bands (Davy Jones'), plus token members from the other members' bands (I think Micky Dolenz's guitarist and a sax player from Peter Tork's band, something like that anyway). They did a forty-song set including a *lot* of rarities and a performance of the whole Head album, with costume changes and dance routines, keyed to video footage, and they had only *three* days' rehearsal.

Given that we're not expecting this to be a great multimedia spectacular, that the musicians in the band are far superior to the Monkees' musicians, and that you could easily name a 25- or 30-song set that this band could go out and do *right now*, with no rehearsal at all, and do a competent-to-very-good job on, if we don't get at least ten or so decent rarities it'll only be because the Beach Boys themselves can't be bothered, or they think the audience don't want them, not because of lack of rehearsal.

Other than the nine days to rehearse, you would also think that they could pick up a few things while on tour (which is good practice in itself). Also, the bands are probably well versed in the majority of the catalogue, including deeper cuts, I would think. They could learn additional stuff on the road maybe.

Bruce Johnston

I hope they Do do "Cabinessence".  I think there's a high, high chance they may.  If anybody can get it through to Mike how fucking awesome it would be to hear him do that on stage, I think he'd do it.  Hell he did it the first time.  I think Brian/Bruce/Al would definately be down for it.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the song, it's kind of one of those that after you've heard it a few times and experienced it, you don't really need to hear it again because it's not really 'fun' or anything, it's just a musical feat.  It would be amazing to see Mike sing on it, though.

I thought it'd be cool if Mike pulled this out especially in Chicago when originally the city was scheduled to host both the G8 and the NATO summits this May.  There were groups threatening to shut the city down and riot throughout the entire week of the meetings.  No doubt it'd be "best to stay outtasite."
