Title: Waves of Love
Post by: southbay on April 03, 2012, 08:42:15 PM
So now that we have it in our hands nobody wants to talk about it?  Carl's all over it as it turns out, sounds pretty good for how it was recorded. Hardly a classic, but I much prefer it to DFTS.

It's not in my hands....    :(

It can be purchased on iTunes as a single track. Worth the buy.

Carl sings the chorus / bridge (possibly with Matt doubled). He sounds a bit thin to me, but certainly passable.

It's okay. Not great.

Is it over .72? The last thing I wanna do is have to buy a $15 iTunes card to buy one track.

Ninety-nine cents.

No way will the BBs album version have the "Help Me Rhonda…" riff start.

I hope…

Carl's vocal has a demo quality in the delivery, to my ears.

That's because it is.

Does Paypal work with iTunes? Does the account have to be verified? I've got a couple bucks on my Paypal.

NEVERmind.

Yeah, apparently you can, unless they changed it. The first google result was 5 free songs but that expired in 2005.  ::) Go figure it's the first result.

This song is rather intriguing.  For the most part, I find it to be rather predictable, lifeless, dad rock (which is to say, it doesn't rock at all), but the rather low, sloppy production values might play into that.  Al also sounds like he's singing out of his range and doesn't sound that great.  But the song does have its merits.  The melody is solid and catchy, and I really like Carl's part a lot; it actually sounds like something Brian would write.  Very pretty chorus.  So I think with a much better production and, through fleshing the song out a bit more, it could actually be a rather solid track.  It definitely has potential.

Carl's bit is nice, but on the whole: underwhelming.

It is what it is, a nice pop song, it's not going to change the world but I like it, it's pretty.

I've been listening to it and trying to like it (I have a soft spot for Al's solo album btw) but it all just falls flat for me. I think there's a reason Al didn't include it on the album itself, his singing doesn't sound as good as it usually does and the song itself is pretty boring. I can't see this being anywhere near the new BB's album unless it's undergone a serious rewrite.

Waves Of Love = starts like Help Me Rhonda, then California Girls, Bye Bye Love on the chorus... more tunes?

On that amazon preview there was a phrase that seemed like it was lifted from Queen's "You're My Best Friend", the line "whatever this world can give to me".  In the Al song he sings "I never thought I could love you more" to the same melody & rhythm.

Valid points. I think the download version is *significantly* better. A different key, much punchier, etc. The CD version is rather flat, limp, etc.

I still think the track is better than a few of the tracks that ended up on the album. I'll take it over "San Simeon" or "And I Always Will."

Downloaded the three 'new' tracks and Waves Of Love is quite good, as HeyJude has said it's better than tracks such as San Simeon and the horribly derivitive title track. The new version of California Dreamin' is damn good too with Glen's vocal in particular a stand out, this is my favourite version of the three Beach Boys & related versions. The new Sloop John B? Well it's inoffensive and jaunty but seems pointless to me.

Man i've had the new California Dreamin' on repeat, I absolutely love how stripped back it is. Al sounds great and Crosby's weary sounding voice adds a lot. Like you say Glen sounds great, I can't believe he's in his mid 70's! Is that Sloop John B exactly the same as the one from Al's kids book? It's not that it sounds bad but because the words are different I can't sing along!  :lol
