That is considered their peak, but anything from the London years (which includes ("Beggars" and "Bleed" I know) is right up there.  That said, I've always been an "Exile" guy.  Probably simply because it's a double!  But that also means they can go down some different paths.  Dense, murky, cocky, vulnerable, druggy and full of life.  Yeah -- the Stones!  Although there were good things to follow, this was the last brilliant burst.  And pretty much the end of Keith Richards as the driving force of the band, and the last time I believed Mick Jagger as a singer.

"Let It Bleed," "Exile on Main Street," "Sticky Fingers," and "Beggars Banquet."  I would consider them worthy of  consideration as the best four Stones' albums.  Though I suppose it depends on what era of Stones' one prefers.

when i first checked out exile i only liked half of it :) ..and hated the rest now i love all of it..the story behind it shines light on it....i can definitely say it's not for everybody but i can work with it :)
it has a very muddy sound to it...as far as it being the stones best album i'll have to disagree with that. what is your favorite song from it?

Taking on an LP as a whole is where I love Exile so much -- it has a vibe and a sustained one.  "Loving Cup," "Happy," "Rocks Off," "Torn and Frayed," "Let it Loose" could all be my favorite.  And sometimes "Ventilator Blues" or "Rip This Joint" (or others) sound perfect.  Hell, there's a time for "Turd on the Run!"

I guess my second would be "Beggars Banquet" -- it too holds up as a whole whereas "Sticky Fingers" and "Let It Bleed" might have a few lulls for me.  Also, "Beggars Banquet" was such a dark and powerful announcement of what the Stones now were post-psychedelia.  Seemed out of nowhere.

I guess acoustic isn't my deal and that one is largely acoustic.  But come to think of it, it has more good songs than "Sticky Fingers," so I'd change the ranking between those two.

yes as a whole the album has a certain dirty/muddy/dungeon feel to it :) you can hear it and tell the stones were going through a rough time.
let it bleed has to be number one for me in this list there's not one song on that album that is bad...the worst is "country honk" and that's a gorgeous cut.

the best thing about the stones is they have so many eras it's a pleasure/hassle picking which ones are your favorites :)

Rank these four records from your 'most favorite' to 'least favorite'. Beggars Banquet,Let it Bleed,Sticky Fingers & Exile on Main Street? :)
I'd have to go with:

Their Satanic Majesties Request
Aftermath
Between the Buttons
Flowers

They still had good songs afterward, but it just wasn't the same after Brian Jones died.

Easy.
Sticky Fingers
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Exile On Main Street (i wouldn't put this one in the top four, its too sketchy, replace it with aftermath)

Have to ask: do you prefer the US Aftermath or the UK?

US Aftermath has "Paint It Black".

To me, Aftermath is classic Stones, as is Let It Bleed.  With Sticky Fingers they began to lose their way......

:) my favorite album by them is let it bleed..but i always had a special place in my heart for goats head soup..it's so under-rated and over-looked i mean silver train has to be one of the greatest songs ever made by a group :)

I just think it's a really really really great album song-wise! Sure it might sound a bit muddy and might have come after Exile and before they're "comeback" (Some Girls) but song per song: Dancing With Mr. D, Angie, Heartbreaker, Coming Down Again, 100 Years Ago, Winter, Silver Train, Hide Your Love: it's a better record than either Sticky Finger, Let It Bleed or Exile! Well Hide Your Love is more of a jam, but I think it's better than it's spiritual kin found on Exile. I think the songs I listed are on par of better than those found on any other album The Stones ever put out.

I agree with your top 3 but Tattoo You is one of their weakest, but hey I rate Undercover and Voodoo Lounge so what do I know.

It just doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Sterile production, weak songs,  by numbers performances. It sounds like an album of outtakes, which it is.
