Title: "Jeff Klein of the Beach Boys"
Post by: OGoldin on March 16, 2012, 03:21:22 PM
Reading the Dave Marks interview reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask.

Last summer the family and I passed through this tourist destination:  http://www.1880town.com/1880town.html  -- a bunch of old buildings in the middle of nowhere, not very well maintained,  but still, together.  Posted in the front: playing ragtime in the tavern -- Jeff Klein of the Beach Boys!

Who the hell was that, I wondered.  I was going to chat with him, but we were walking the dog through the town, and the tavern was the one building they didn't want a dog in.

I see they are still advertising Klein as having played with the boys back in high school  http://www.1880town.com/live-entertainment.html  but are not saying online that he was actually in the band . . . .

Anyone know about him?  He might have some stories to tell . . . .

I searched a little bit and couldn't find anything. Nothing on the website for former Hawthorne Cougars either.... Hmmmmmm.

No-one called Jeff Klein has ever played with any configuration of The Beach Boys. At best he might have been in one of the many incarnations of Carl & The Passions.

There was a band called Beach Boys before our Beach Boys. Maybe he was part of that ?

Hey check it out, everybody. It's the first time ever AGD does not have a definitive answer for something.

There was at least one Hawaiian musical group with Beach Boys in their name.

I once walked into a club in St. Louis where I was playing and saw myself advertised as on the poster as "Adam Marsland of the Beach Boys."  Which was pretty fricking embarrassing, especially when a few folks from the board showed up and saw it.  Suffice to say I had nothing to do with it.  Someone at the club just got lazy with a line in my bio and tried to get a few extra rubes through the door.  Maybe same thing going on here?

It is a Freudian catharsis for our Andrew. From now on, he'll be an extremely relaxed guy. Like in:

"hey Don, I really don't know exactly any more when Brian's comeback album was released, nor do I care a foda. Have some reefer?"

This is the guy.  http://www.myspace.com/jeffkleinpianomusic

He's your basic hotel pianist.  He is effective at setting a mood and he's not too flashy, but nothing at all interesting.

We are  heading back out to South Dakota the summer -- to go back to a yurt in the Black Hills for a few days.  Maybe I'll pass through there again and invite him to visit Smiley Smile.

I have one of their albums somewhere... A well-meant gift from my wonderful sister!

I had a brief conversation with a guy who was working in a CVS store in Sarasota, FL maybe 10 years ago.  We got to talking about music and I mentioned something about the Beach Boys ... he said, "I wrote one of their songs".  I was kind of taken aback and asked him which one.  "Getcha Back", he said.  He mentioned somehow knowing Carl Wilson and that he sold the song to the group without any credit.

Stranger things have happened I guess, but I just sort of shrugged and said, "oh weird".

Anyone want to sign my petition to include Jeff in the reunion?

I'm pretty sure Bruce Springsteen wrote Getcha Back, actually.
