Title: The Great Love Song. Post by: hypehat on March 07, 2012, 07:15:33 PM What is it?
Inspired by recent talk, and my own longstanding love for it as a quality piece of music, I nominate I Only Have Eyes For You, by The Flamingos. Your mileage may vary ;D Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: Eireannach on March 07, 2012, 07:33:51 PM Earth Angel by The Penguins has to be up there.

Post by: hypehat on March 08, 2012, 07:14:51 AM I don't know whether it's just the fact I started the thread with a a 50's doowop song, but the overwhelming majority of songs you guys posted are 50's/60's doo-wop or similar (i liked your song Alholio!). I wonder why that is?

I wonder why that is? That's because because Doo Wop is magic. Awesome voices, authentic emotions, words from the street. That's what makes a great "love song" [I still find that term difficult, though...].(http://www.soul-patrol.com/soul/graphics/sc_cover.jpg) Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: hypehat on March 08, 2012, 07:32:34 AM Well, in terms of what you're saying, yeah lots of pop songs are love songs, ranging from wanting to bone people to your first kiss, getting married, breaking up, and so on. But lots of pop songs aren't 'I Only Have Eyes For You', which achieves something that, oh IDK, 'Leader of the Pack' doesn't. Both are pop songs about love, but I'd call one a Love Song. There's something in the emotions therein. Maybe that's why everybody's picking doo wop, it's very emotional and straightforward with it.

There's something in the emotions therein. Good definition for the "real kind" of "love song". Maybe that's why everybody's picking doo wop, it's very emotional and straightforward with it. ... and in a sense, it's very innocent about it. I guess that's what I like about Doo Wop - apart from the mere musical beauty. Two aspects one could also apply to much of the Beach Boys catalogue, obviously. Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: meltedwhiskeyinmyhand on March 08, 2012, 08:49:55 AM My 2 current favorites
James Carr - Dark End of the Street (The Flying Burrito Brothers version is awesome as well) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzcdNwIkmYA Clarence Carter - Slip Away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2GYo9QDoRU Title: Re: The Great Love Song. BTW I thought this was very fitting: Hank Williams Jr - (I Don't Have) Anymore Love Songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLIKyc90kA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLIKyc90kA) Don't worry baby is one of my favorite love songs. GOK too. Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: hypehat on March 08, 2012, 04:36:16 PM I nearly picked God Only Knows, but it seemed an obvious choice around here ;D
The greatest Hank Williams broken hearted song will always be 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry'. That song is devastating. I Can't Help Falling In Love With You by Elvis is another all-time one. It's like a hymn. And the lyrics are perfect. You could not improve them. Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: Ron on March 08, 2012, 05:31:50 PM Dream Lover - Bobby Darin Preach it brother. It's nearly perfect; also I think it really says a lot about Bobby Darin and where he was in his life when he wrote it. A year later, he met Sandra Dee... famously, even though they divorced, and he even later remarried, she took care to always look after him, even visiting him in the hospital... after his death she never remarried, until her passing 30 years later. Yeah. I still believe in stuff like that. (http://www.bobbydarin.com/BD&SD&DoddCGrove.jpg) Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: feelflows on March 09, 2012, 10:06:54 PM "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Otis Redding's version of course, but Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' unreleased version also packs a special punch, for obvious reasons.

Bobby Darin never seems to get the accolades that he deserves, he could sing brilliantly in so many different styles and always sounded wonderful. Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: Paulos on March 12, 2012, 03:13:18 AM Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers, cally me sappy but I have always loved this song, the only bad thing is the numerous awful ocver versions that have followed.
Title: Re: The Great Love Song. Post by: hypehat on March 12, 2012, 12:54:38 PM Have you heard this one? The best.

Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers, cally me sappy but I have always loved this song, the only bad thing is the numerous awful ocver versions that have followed. Oh yes. Hell, yes. And if loving this tune to death means being sappy, than colour me sappy. The melody itself is outta-this-world, and Bobby Hatfield's vocals are among the most impressive crooning vocals ever put to tape. Outstanding recording.@hypehat: ;D Title: Re: The Great Love Song. That song is devastating. I Can't Help Falling In Love With You by Elvis is another all-time one. It's like a hymn. And the lyrics are perfect. You could not improve them. "I'm so lonesome I could cry" is one of my faorite songs ever and there aren't many versions that did the song justice beside the original. I'm always waiting for the definite version. But probably that always will be Hanks' I wouldn't consider it a love song, though. Of course you could interpret it that way but I think it's not about a social loneliness (love) but of a emotional (reclusion). Does that make sense ? I like Elvis' studio recording of Can't Help... but I think the very best rendition he ever gave is on his "In person" album. There's so much emotion and soul. For some reason the studio cut hasn't this imo Quote Insert Quote Elvis - Love Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyxg8TYV7ZQ Oh yeah. Forgot about that. Leiber & Stoller wrote it as a parody of country music and they more than once stated how astonished they were with what Elvis made with that song. On Presley's 60s soundtracks are a lot of beautiful love ballads to be found. One of the best (written by the great Don Robertson) is "They remind me too much of you". Hope this works for you guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EAfQ4SKQyc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EAfQ4SKQyc) This is also a not very well known classic (It Hurts Me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TshL-YfSuIM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TshL-YfSuIM) And also Presley's rendition of the old country song "Have I told you lately that I love you?" is genius. And I won't even mention "Are you lonesome tonight" or "Love me tender". Thanks guys, I might gonna listen to my Presley love songs CD tonight |
