Title: "Best Friends" By The Beach Boys
Post by: FatherOfTheMan Sr101 on March 03, 2012, 12:03:34 PM
We talked about Friends being almost perfect, try listening to this playlist:

I call the "album" "Best Friends" and I think this would have made their last capitol album AS GOOD AS Pet Sounds.

Opinions?

I think Friends, the way it is, is as good as Pet Sounds.

That being said: nice playlist. I would've kept out The Nearest Faraway Place and kept TM as the last song.

As you've taken out the best song on the album, Be Here In The Mornin', and added in the worst song from 20/20, the Nearest Faraway Place, i'd have to disagree that this version of Friends is anything like the Best. Sorry.

Friends as it should've been released in 1968:

SIDE ONE:
Meant For You
Friends
I Went To Sleep
Little Bird
When A Man Needs A Woman
Diamond Head

SIDE TWO:
Wake The World
Busy Doin Nothing
Break Away (demo if available?)
We're Together Again
Time To Get Alone

Be with me and TNFP were recorded to late.

Why do people not like Be Here in the Morning? That's a great song! One of my favorite Beach Boys songs.

Album doesn't begin with "Meant For You"?

Blasphemy! *throws acid in your eyes*

Ditto. It's definately my favourite on the album, and certainly in my top 20-30 BB songs. Only weird people don't like Be Here In The Mornin' - scientific fact.

How dare you! Think before you post! That might be offensive to people who know people who have had acid thrown in their eyes.

Is this a joke reaction? If not, touchy in the extreme. If so, apologises.

well, I don't think it's funny to begin with, but my sense of humor might differ from others...

Well i didn't find it funny either, but i just intensely dislike people who get offended at the drop of a hat...

I know people who have been offended so joking about being offended is offensive.

Be here in the morning is a great song but if you're comparing Friends to Pet sounds you need to come back to reality.

I think there are several BB records just as good as Pet Sounds and Friends is certainly one of them.

Is Pet Sounds the best BB record? Yes. Is it my personal favourite? No. Sure a lot of people here feel the same...

No, I agree.  Friends is a fine album but it doesn't come close to matching Pet Sounds.  It's not even one of my favorite Beach Boys albums but it certainly has some nice songs on it, Busy Doin' Nothin' is one of my favorites.

5. Diamond Head
6. Anna Lee The Healer

Side B

1. Be Still

In my ideal album playlists, I merged Wild Honey with Smiley Smile and I scattered the tracks of 20/20 over Friends and a late '69 album I call 'Good Humor' which is why ILJOTSY, TTGA and IWTS have made the cut in my version of Friends ;) it was actually pretty difficult to get all of the four waltzes in there without it sounding too samey, but I think I managed with this sequencing.

Friends (Alternate)

Meant for You
Friends
Anna Lee the Healer
I'd Love Just Once to See You
Diamond Head
I Went to Sleep
Busy Doin' Nothin'

Wake the World
When a Man Needs a Woman
Be Here in the Mornin'
Passing By
Time to Get Alone
Little Bird
Can't Wait too Long

This is off topic (kinda), but I was in a somewhat local indie store today, and the owner put on Meant For You and Little Bird off the Friends album. As they were playing, a group of three people started chatting at the counter about how much of an asshole Mike Love is.  :lol

Maybe too long for a single  album circa 1968, though maybe not (Friends was/is pretty brief).

Meant for You
Friends
Be Here In The Mornin'
Wake the World
Cool Cool Water
We're Together Again
Time to Get Alone
Diamond Head
Do It Again

With A Little Help From My Friends
Old Folks At Home/Old Man River
When a Man Needs a Woman
Little Bird
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Passing By
Can't Wait too Long
I Went To Sleep
Transcendental Meditation

Friends is already very clearly inspired by Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour. With A Little Help seems unnecessary because it just retreads the same ground already covered on the title track.

Passing By seems like a pretty clear nod to Flying.

Anna Lee, The Healer is solidly in the vein of stupid Paul McCartney "character" songs like Lovely Rita.

Songs like Be Here in The Morning and When a Man Needs a Woman share the sort of hokey optimism of When I'm 64 or Getting Better.

I've just never been able to shake the feeling that Friends was the most Sgt. Peppers/Beatles inspired Brian ever did.

To me, Friends is one of those BB albums, such as Holland, All Summer Long or Wild Honey, which has a consistent feel throughout, rather than just being a collection of songs (see Surf's Up, 20/20), and messing with the tracklisting only messes with the flow. I think the album is nigh on perfect from Meant For You up until Diamond Head (what a great song title that is!); had the album ended with We're Together Again than it would've brought the 'friends' theme of the opening tracks full circle and made for an even more well-rounded album, although as it is TM doesn't bother me as much as it does some people (personally i think it's another of Brian's 'jokes' - ending such a peaceful album with such a noisy track is similar to the way he followed the blissful Wind Chimes fade with the blaring Gettin' Hungry).

I think if the band would have released the '67 Hawaii concert instead of Wild Honey, some of those tracks could have gotten fit onto Friends.

Be Still is one song that I've never really been sold on. It's not great writing, the melody isn't particularly memorable, and the lyrics lack sufficient focus or meaningful direction. Some fans see it is being a pretty little throw away, but I don't really think it's all that pretty honestly.

The pairing of Be Here In The Mornin' and When A Man Needs A Woman feels a little monotonous, and both songs suffer when you're forced to listen to them one after the other.

I don't really think Friends is perfect. It's close. But it's not quite there.

What you're missing re Be Still is the absolutely beautiful singing by Dennis. When he sings 'now is the time, life begins' - heavenly!

Remove Trancendental Meditation, replace with I Went To Sleep.

My 14 year old son thinks SURFS UP is a lot better than PET SOUNDS, but I haven't exposed him to FRIENDS as of yet.

(and yes, he's musically astute - for his age, that is - musical family, and all that)
