I have a hard time imagining this being good, but stranger things have happened.

I want to like this idea, but I'm afraid no good will come of it.

i thought Across The Universe was awful, but some folks really seemed to like it.

I don't see how a Beach Boys musical could be any worse.

Three things could have made Across The Universe good.

1) The plot was a big fucking baby-boomer mess. The Vietnam sh*t in particularly really killed it. Such an obvious way to go and just seeing that in the trailer turned a lot of people off. A storyline that wasn't revolving around or in the sixties would have been much better.

2) Godawful vocals and sound mixes. The singing often wasn't that great and the production sounded so muzak.

3) Different arrangements. The songs are mostly exactly the same as the real ones so it felt like mediocre karaoke. Why not a big band take on one track or a symphony laden take on another? Why not play with the time signatures a bit, etc.?

I'm gonna be optimistic about it, but I kinda see it being one of those things that make people who already think the Beach Boys are corny think that way even more. Musicals are quite corny to begin with, but they don't all suck; hopefully this one will be good.

I actually didn't mind Across the Universe that much - that said, I'll be much more critical of a Beach Boys themed project, so color me skeptical on this one.  I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

3 BB's movies in the works, you have to admit that's pretty awesome

I watched about 30 min of Across the Universe and couldn't take it anymore. It stands in a three-way tie for worst movie I've ever seen with Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star and Cube 2: Hypercube. The only reason I can find for optimism about this project is its' potential to turn new people on to the catalog. When Across the Universe came out my then high school aged cousin loved it and asked me to make some '60s music mixes for her, so even if people like us think it is awful, someone out there will probably enjoy it and discover some great new music as a result.

Unless something incredible happens to sway me, I can't see paying movie theater money to see this. I probably will have to see it eventually though, just out of curiosity. I'm going to start to prepare myself for the hour and half of my life I won't ever get back.

Cube 2: Hypercube was incredible

Cube 2: Hypercube was incredible

The original Cube was great for a "get all your friends together to watch a terrible movie" night, but Cube 2 was so bad that it wasn't even any fun to mock it.

It's this, right ?

We had a thread when it was announced. You got John Stamos involved so you really think this will be a movie of deep quality ?

Alone this quote makes me cringe:

Stamos also has a solid model for how successful a project like this can be: The film version of the Abba musical Mamma Mia! was Universal Pictures" biggest earner of 2008, both domestically and internationally. "Everybody has been sort of trying to figure out how to redo Mamma Mia! and also appeal to a male audience," he says. "It made a billion dollars, but that was the smaller demographic for [Abba]. With the Beach Boys, you"ve got girls in bikinis, you"ve got cars, so we expect to get a good male demo with this."

Don"t expect the film to echo Broadway"s Good Vibrations, a jukebox musical that closed after two months. "I walked out halfway through," Stamos says. "It"ll be nothing like that — I promise you. It"ll be the opposite of that. Trust me."

I disagree with this, I thought the arrangements were too different. They way they did "I Want to Hold Your Head" took all the energy out of it. and the phrasing was slightly off.

Haha I hated Across the Universe too! Ironically the year it came out, a lot of the singers in that movie showed up at the Fest for Beatles fans. I liked them singing in person a heck of a lot better.

After reading the Rolling Stone article, it's clear this is just Across the Universe: Beach Boys edition. For f***'s sake, did they really have to center it in the sixties with "the Vietnam war looming"?  ::)

I am a music theatre actor, and I think the only time I've seen a musical that gets it right with using a band's music in the context of a script, is Jersey Boys. I think the Beach Boys as a band have a much better story, and more characters that in real life almost play out like something written for fiction. They should really think about doing a musical, and why not movie musical, using the Beach Boys music, but set up like Jersey Boys where you tell their story instead of trying to come up with some crap plot that no one cares about, and then try to insert Good Vibrations.

I hope this movie doesn't get made so I don't have to shell out 15 bucks to see it in theaters.
