Title: The Magic Numbers
Post by: b.dfzo on December 27, 2005, 07:16:20 PM
Has anyone heard of them?  They are a quartet of two pairs of brother and sister, which makes their singing blend sound awesome, IMO.  If you read Spin, the ads for their debut album are ubiquitous with every issue, it seems.  The lead singer is very much in the vein of Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian or even our own Carl Wilson...am I alone in this observation?  Really good tunes, either way.  But, then, any band that puts tambourine and handclaps in all of their songs deserves a mention here!

And Brian Wilson apparently loves em!
And I do, too.

Oh yeah, I forgot, The Magic Numbers opened for Brian in the UK, didn't they?

Just this week from the Sun in England:

Many musicians cite you as a major influence, but which new bands are you a fan of?

BW: The Magic Numbers are a great group. They are the best band of the last 10 years. It makes me feel great that they are influenced by me.

I also like Green Day and Oasis.

I don’t listen to much music these days though.

here's the whole deal:

Maybe he does!  That alone would confirm that he does, indeed, have mental problems.

That is a joke, BTW.

I was listening to the radio the other day and a song was playing that sounded very Pet Sounds -esque, and I was like, "Wow, I gotta find out who this is!" and then the DJ said it was the Magic Numbers and I remembered that interview and was disappointed for some reason.

You should have known - as always, Brian was right!

Check it out! Fantastic cd: full of hooks, great harmonies, unexpected rhythm changes.
I love it!

I don't know what seems wrong with that. Green Day have some BBs-influences shown on "American Idiot" and they toured with Brian last year for some shows.

Green Day's Beach Boy influence is a few degrees away, even from their biggest influences.  I would more comfortably say Cheap Trick or The Ramones, since both of those bands were into The Beach Boys.  I can't say that for sure about Green Day.

Their look reminds me of a certain hairy band that used to be Boys and sang songs about the Beach et al...

Magic Numbers haven't lit my fire at all.

A band called HAL had an album ( on rough  trade) out at the same time bu MN's hogged all that "Brilliant harmonies" press space and the Hal record wasn't 1/2 as successful and yet it was the album of the year imo.

I agree about Hal, their album was very good. I saw Magic numbers live supporting Saint Etienne in Brighton, but their 'on record' sound didn't add much to the brew and I find them a bit too fey for my liking, if there is such a thing.

I heard a few of their tracks on their website and I wasn't impressed. I love all the bands they claim to be influenced by, but I don't really hear it coming through with them. I'll check out this Hal band, though. Haven't heard of them.

Heres the video for the single "Play the Hits"  which was produced by Edwyn Collins btw.
http://www.virgin.net/music/musicvideos/hal_playthehits_hi.html

A bit fo a 4 seasons influence on this track I reckon.

Their most Beach Boysish track is called "My Eyes are sore"  They opened with it when I saw them live and it was superb.
