Title: What Artist/Group Have You Found Yourself listening to The Most Lately? :)
Post by: Newguy562 on February 18, 2012, 05:01:28 PM
I've currently been listening to The Rolling Stones everything from England's Newest Hit Makers -  The Voodoo Lounge :)
Sometimes I forget how truly amazing they are..The way their sound evolved/changed & the way it sounds so different every decade. (60's,70's,80's,90's) It's Astonishing :) right now I can say my favorite Rolling Stones era is everything post satanic majesties request.(It'll change tomorrow)...
What have you found yourself listening to a lot lately ? that made you even more of a fan than you already were

Watched the Harry Nilsson doc and now I am playing catch up, though I did own "Nilsson Schmilsson" prior. Anyway -- amazing artist.  And frustrating.  Buddy of VDP and Brian in the cocaine days.

Van Morrison. Had Astral Weeks for a while and I love it but only recently have I expanded my collection. Moondance took me a few spins to get into but now I adore every second of music that oozes from the disc. I also have Tupelo Honey and Hard Nose the Highway which are both great. Looking forward to hearing It's Too Late to Stop Now - I hear great things.

Billy Joel!

"An Innocent Man" is my favorite album of his, I've loved it ever since I was a kid.  Lately though I've been getting into some of his later stuff, like "a Matter of trust", or his version of "To Make you Feel My Love", or "Shameless".

I always liked his bridges, Billy Joel has the best bridges ever.   Really creative, moody stuff in almost every song.  Just the bridge to "Uptown Girl" puts him head and shoulders above most other musicians.

Mostly Mardi Gras music as of late
The Wild Magnolias, James Booker, and Fess.  The latest album by Anders Osborne, American Pacthwork is phucking brilliant. You guys ought to read up on him, great musicain with a really interesting story.

I've also busted out my old grateful dead boots and have been revisiting shows from 1977. Mind>blown.

I have to agree. This is the kind of thing that I think people might say is a guilty pleasure, but f*** the idea of guilty pleasures. Generally speaking, people who sell kajillions of albums do so for a reason, and one of the main reasons is catchy, enjoyable music. Billy Joel made that. I won't say I'm a huge fan, but there are some of his songs that I flat-out love. (Uptown Girl is one, btw.) The most innovative guy ever? A genius? Nope. Really, really good at making pop music that a huge number of people wanted to hear? Yep.

Uh Oh! Sounds like you're starting to come around to my way of thinking.  Watch out, soon enough people will be kicking you out of the little boy's club.

Have you heard 'lullabye' ?  Songwriting doesn't get much better than that, the guy's great!  "An Innocent Man" is fantastic though, the entire album is very good.  Even stuff like "Easy Money" is really good... like I mentioned though, his bridges always blow me away.

Not the greatest of all time, but very consistantly great.  Very solid songwriter, and of course an excellent pianist.

Um, Sticky Fingers and Tattoo You are the only records after Exile that you should even be bothering with. Utliize the extra time saved by avoiding the later stuff to bask in the awesomeness of a track like "I Just Want To See His Face"

Watched the Harry Nilsson doc and now I am playing catch up, though I did own "Nilsson Schmilsson" prior. Anyway -- amazing artist.  And frustrating.  Buddy of VDP and Brian in the cocaine days.

He's got a truly amazing and underrated catalog. You'll be very surprised. The documentary kind of made it look like he never regained the brilliance of Nilsson Schmilsson but he has plenty of albums that are nearly as good in my mind. I really dig Knnillssonn in particular and "I Never Thought I'd Get This Lonely" might be my favorite track of his.

Billy Joel!

I unabashedly love The Stranger and feel it's too perfect to ignore. I feel that he's an artist that never really went where he should have given his great talents, except for that one album where the stars aligned perfectly.

Lots of Lee "Scratch" Perry for me lately! :smokin

He has such a wealth of great material, one of the best producers of all time. And hell, if you smoke enough of the good times cigarettes, you'll probably forget you listened to that boxed set of his and can listen to it all over again.  :lol

Cotton Mather, specifically the just re-released Kontiki. I have loved this albums since it was released the first time (when providence left it for me as the band stumbled through the college-town music store in which I worked that summer), and rarely to never saw it in a store since. I also love their bandleader Robert Harrison's current band, Future Clouds and Radar. But this album by this band, if you're a mid-60s Beatles and Dylan fan (with some Squeeze, Guided By Voices, etc. thrown in), you might want to give them a shot.

That will get you the idea, though there are another eight or so great songs. I love it. Always have. Probably always will. So glad it has been reissued and I hope people buy it.

After a brief sojourn, I'm back on my Neil Young obsession. I desperate want to buy the Archives first volume but it is way out of my price range.

The Free Design! Too bad their '70s albums are pretty forgettable (though I've not yet listened to There Is A Song yet)... their '60s stuff is really quite good. It sometimes gets just a little too easy-listening for me at times but overall I like how they write songs about everyday stuff like, uh, flying kites or how bubbles are super cool. Derp.

I've seriously been considering getting more into Neil Young, I love his score to the Jim Jarmusch film "Dead Man" as does my dad, so I've been thinking about listening to more, but I'm not sure where to start, yet.

Can't go wrong with Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, imo

Everybody Knows is a great one. I might start with After the Goldrush, then go to Everybody Knows, and then go to Harvest. If you are still with him at that point, you should try Tonight's The Night, Comes a Time, Rust Never Sleeps and American Stars n' Bars. Those right there are, in my opinion, the best albums. Tonight's The Night is probably my second favorite after Goldrush but it is definitely an acquired taste and you really have to know Neil Young at that point to accept that he's having an emotional meltdown and that it's all ok.

You're welcome. Just don't expect the same thing twice with good ol' Neil! Sometimes you'll get it but mostly you'll be disappointed.

Listening to all the Nick Lowe one man can stand...luckily my lady is also obsessed. He's just such a great, classic songwriter and his last four albums have been his best yet! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8SgNCF9g5o... Check it out.

Is his latest any good? I read a review and it sounds right up my alley (only issue is I am extremely sceptical of Daniel Lanois), but I haven't got round to it yet

My review is somewhat superficial because all my attention lately has gone into listening to other Neil Young eras like Hawks & Doves, or the new Treasure live album from the mid-80s. But Le Noise to me sounds like his best since Prairie Wind and it's got a nice new concept being a solo electric album. It sounds like it has quite a bit of life in it.

His production put out a film where he plays the album - like a music video for the whole album. I enjoy the production on it and it's a good way to enjoy the album:
