Title: Al's Mental World? Post by: harrisonjon on February 12, 2012, 12:09:36 PM Without wishing to be harsh on someone who is probably a nice guy, is he even more out of touch with perspective than one would expect of a man of nearly 70? He seems to be an old guy in a bubble.
Mike and Bruce, for all their faults, seem to be far more grounded in the real world, by comparison. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: The Shift on February 12, 2012, 12:19:44 PM Eh?

Looking jovial and sounding young. Different personalities, I guess. And yes, the question sounds harsh, specially within the current (today's) circumstances. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: SamMcK on February 12, 2012, 01:44:32 PM I don't really understand this thread. If anything Al is WAY to mentally stable considering the band and people he's known through the years.

I love looking up obscure pictures of the Boys to prove some ridiculous point. :police:Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Margarita on February 12, 2012, 02:16:17 PM Al exists to provide balance. He's the polar opposite of Brian in every way. His midwestern milquetoastness kept the Wilson-ness of the band from imploding upon itself many times over.
In other news, I think "Al's Mental World" would be a fantastic name for a shop... Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Mr. Cohen on February 12, 2012, 02:50:42 PM I thought Al sounded goofy and out of touch when he said we - the people - need the Beach Boys to perform music and bring hope during this time of deep economic trouble. Yes, because what I really need at this time is the Beach Boys t try and make heaps of cash off of my nostalgia. I bet it's warming the hearts of rioters in Greece right now. If the BBs cared about us getting through this rough economic time, the proceeds from this tour would be going to charity. I mean, all the BBs (except Dave) are rich as all hell, or should be if we assume they haven't blown it all.
I guess Mike's hats don't pay for themselves. Look, I don't give if the BBs are greedy or whatever. Just don't be hypocrites! Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Look, I don't give if the BBs are greedy or whatever. Just don't be hypocrites! The Beach Boys gift to the people is their music. I would say there three rich as hell people in the band. Al's not one of them. And compared to Bono, none of them are rich as hell. Let him do a charity tour. A little heart warming gesture chould come from Germany. As countrys go, they're sitting pretty. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Mr. Cohen on February 12, 2012, 03:59:21 PM Quote Al's not one of them. I'm sure Al did quite well for himself, sticking with the BBs for so long and never developing any serious addictions. He owns his own kick ass recording studio in Big Sur, for pete's sake! Somehow, it doesn't seem like he's hurting. I thought it was comical how long he waited to release his album as he waited for the right record deal. How many copies did think he was going to sell, and how much money did he even expect to make? Just give the damn stuff away. It seems like the older generation of musicians are out to horde every last red cent they can find for themselves. Neil Young just gave an interview recently praising record labels, saying that they "nurture" artists... what planet do these old rock stars come from? I feel like they come from a more privileged time and could care less how messed up things are today. It's not their problem. Real artists today know that indie or a small label is the only way to go if you actually want to express yourself artistically. Personally, I don't buy that people like Rihanna or are "artists". They may be singers or musicians, but not artists. Yes, I know that Brian has always been signed to big record companies. But it's obvious, as he became more enlightened, that he began rebelling against that. Smiley Smile, pitching a Jasper Daily record to execs, Love You, all the bizarre '70s material... that guy has been actively punking the major labels or just doing whatever he feels like since about '66. Of course, nowadays, he's old and easily pushed around, and will do some things that I don't believe truly reflect who he is as a person. Didn't one of Marilyn's friends or sisters say that in a recent documentary or interview? I totally believe it. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Way back when he was with Friends and Family, he invited me to ride in his limo from the hotel to the venue. Once at the venue he got me back stage passes. I ran into him several times that weekend, and each time he took a few minutes to chat with me. He was more than nice!!
Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Mikie on February 13, 2012, 12:08:59 PM Yep. Talked with Al for quite awhile when he was at the Record Day event in Berkeley last year. He was more than gracious on that day - told stories, sang a few songs for the small crowd, shook hands and signed autographs.
Also saw Al play a concert near his house in Big Sur previous to that and he sang great and was completely sane. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Mr. Wilson on February 13, 2012, 02:58:13 PM I think the best thing about this thread is all the kind words for Al and that the thread wasnt originally called .Al"s Mental Ward...Things get crazy around here.!
Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: GuyOnTheBeach on February 13, 2012, 03:02:25 PM I'm sure more than a few of us on here have Al on Facebook, how many other people in a band as big as The Beach Boys will have a personal Facebook profile which they accept members of the public on?, that in it's self speaks volumes to me about what kind of a person he is.
Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: southbay on February 13, 2012, 04:39:40 PM I have had the fortune to meet Al on numerous occasions over the years. In the early days I was more interested in meeting Carl and Brian for obvious reasons. Over the years, however, I began to seek out Al backstage (and Carl, as well) simply because he was always friendly and willing to talk. This was particularly true once he found out how devoted a fan one was. The more you knew about the band and its history (for instance, a mention of loop de loop or Susie Cincinnati) always goes a looong way with Al. He takes time for the "real" fans, which is not always the case
Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: The Shift on February 13, 2012, 04:42:47 PM I wonder if the title of the thread is an error, and it's meant to tread "AL's DENTAL world"? Even that's a long-shot.

What's everyone's favourite 'Al moment'? Mine is the bit at 1.24 in the That Same Song video (with the gospel choir) when he smiles to the camera. He strangely reminds me of my Uncle Geoff at this point (despite looking nothing like him). The fact that he's stood next to Mike Love in a turban only makes him seem even more likeable in comparison... Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Ron on February 19, 2012, 10:59:43 AM My personal favorite Al moment, is when on that one Live CD, he sings "You Still Believe In Me" better than Brian sang it on the original record.
That's pretty fucking hard to do. Title: Re: Al's Mental World? Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on February 19, 2012, 12:59:34 PM My WORST Al moment however must be in the European footage on the Endless Harmony CD when he's being embaressingly pompous next to a cannon.
