Title: First Time Beach Boys Lineup at Grammys
Post by: Jon Stebbins on February 08, 2012, 01:27:22 PM
One thing that should be noted (because obsessed fans like me care about these things) is that when the Beach Boys perform at the Grammys it will be the first time this particular lineup has performed together. They "appeared" together at the 2006 Capitol Rooftop reunion, but obviously they did not perform. Just to be clear...Dave has played in lineups with Brian and Mike (with Dennis and Carl)...he's played with Mike and Al (with Dennis and Carl)...he's played with Mike, Carl, Dennis, Al and Bruce (without Brian)...he's played with Mike, Bruce, Al and Carl (without Brian)...and with Mike and Bruce (without Brian, Al, Dennis and Carl)...but he's never played with the combination of Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce...until the Grammys.

Awesome, David has finally come full circle with the BBs.

I touched on this 2-3 years ago when talk on the boards first turned to the 50th and some kind of reunion. The mix of these 5 voices for the first time should be interesting.

I also look forward to hearing the mix on the new album. Sure, the Beach Boys sound highlights falsetto but as it is a stretch for the guys now, I have no problem hearing a some work without it.

I also think it is great that Dave benefits, in what ever way, from the 50th.

Interesting times.

It's a great time for the band to be coming together again. Both Brian's outfit & the touring Mike & Bruce show performances have great musical chops that lay homage to the band's artistic peak; combining those elements with the integrity added by Dave & Al's presence makes for – potentially – some of the greatest BBs' gigs in their career.  We'll miss Dennis & Carl, for ever, but this combo could do something extra special.

I'm worried about Mike Love and whether his voice is up to it as the lead singer.  That's why I would like to see Al handle lead at least for this performance.

Didn't somebody post that Glen Campbell is going to be performing at the Grammys? It would be awesome if he were on stage with the Beach Boys as well...

He'll sound better than Brian will, most likely.

Plus,   Stamos is going to be there.  So it's like ALL the living Beach Boys will be involved!

Shoot, might as well add Macca out there, as well, standing right next to Brian. The twins reunited.

I just wish Dave didn't have to perform in a lineup with Maroon 5...

I know! It'll probably kill him!  Dave prefers to play with musicians nobody's ever heard of at your local swap meet, or down at his local bar on Saturdays, but heaven forbid he stand on the same stage as a multi-time, multi-platinum grammy winner.  That's got to SUCKKKKKKKK.

The only way to save this performance is if it ends with Mike Love getting kicked in the groin.  Otherwise I won't be satisfied.

Don't forget Ringo's a presenter too, so could also throw his hat into the ring - both BBs and Beatles could reunite on the world stage simultaneously, both bands being just a couple of members short...

Love and peace, man, love and peace... But no autographs, okay?

David could be stage right of Mike -- that looks like the barest hint of an elbow in the far side of the photo.

By the way, where is the press getting the notion that these guys (with the exception of David) haven't performed together in 20 years? I was at the Fan Fair show in 1996, and Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce, and Carl were all there.

Fantastic!

And notice Brian is seated at a piano, not a keyboard.....

Oh Lord

Also, as expected, we see the Foskett and Nelson amongst others.

Will this be the stage setting?
Brian center with a piano, Al and Bruce without any instrument, and a medium row drum kit for Stamos?

Is that Stamos. Can you tell? Big hair?

More importantly, notice the timpani drums that Nelson seems to be playing. This could narrow down the potential songs a bit.

"Wouldn't It Be Nice"?

It can't be Worms.

Can it?

I'm going for "Wouldn't It Be Nice". Most well known BB song featuring kettle drums, off the top of my head. What do we think?

Awesome they gave Brian a real piano.

The flute suggests 'Good Vibrations' or less likely, 'Sloop John B'.

or ...

A 'SMiLE' medley would restore my faith in humanity, Maroon 5 or not.

The only song I can think of that would require both the tympani Nelson's playing and the flute Paul's playing is, oddly, I'm Waiting For The Day. Now, I'm certain it won't be that, but maybe some kind of Pet Sounds medley?

I'm now betting on a SMiLE suite ... since a lot of the songs were interchangeable snippets, it would work.  And the group are probably expecting a Grammy nomination for SMiLE next year ... it would make sense.

I'm not familiar with the Grammys. Isn't it a greatest hits sort of thing aimed at a younger crowd? Would a SMiLE suite go down?

I'd love it if they did, but I can't see it.

Probably not, but look at it this way: he's friends with these guys going way back now and it's long been a Beach Boys policy to get their friends in the backing band, and I CAN see the er, logic in having a handsome hearthrob guy jumping in on the drums ala Dennis. As misguided as it might be.

However, if Mike introduces him as "You all know this man as Uncle Jesse" or something like that, I will surely gag!

Pretty sure lavine (maroon 5) could sing wouldnt it be nice very eadily. Cmon guys this is better than hootie and ricky martin

Plus this could have happened in 1999 with The Spice Girls coming up as the "Be True To Your School" cheerleaders and Ricky Martin sputtering out"God Only Knows" with the actual Jamiroquai doing interpretative dance!

The Maroon 5 guy NOT singing his own crappy songs might be just fine.

Between the time photos 1 and 2 were taken, Bruce changed his shirt and lost 40 pounds.

More photos from Al's Facebook -- includes Dave and the youngun's.

And this is the biggest they get, I'm afraid.

Permit me to piss on your campfire. Seems Stamos will be there.

Sh*t, sh*t and thrice sh*t.  >:(
take Stamos element away, he sounded very excited about what he was hearing.

Okay... so... at the end of the audio clip, when that manager guy briefly opens the door to the Beach Boys rehearsing, I definitely hear Good Vibrations.  :thewilsons

Anyone else?

But it also seems he will have a very minor part in this - not being at all the rehearsals and stuff (judging from the audio clip). If he's in the far back thumping along on some drum set and not mentioned by Mike I'm fine with this, I guess.

If Stamos is going to be there, best case scenario is that he's just there to introduce them onstage. Given his admiration for their music I wouldn't actually have a problem with him doing that but please keep him away from a Gibson and a microphone!

Cool photos! Although, in the picture where Brian is "deep in thoughts" - he's clearly taking a nap between rehearsals.  :lol

I'm reading that differently - Maroon 5 do "SG" on their own, FTP do "WIBN" on their own and they join the BB for "GV", as per this:

I'm really excited for all this Grammy thing. Who would have thought, even months ago, that this this celebration, with this level of worldwide exposure would happen? The BBs seem to be the biggest Grammy news these days, that these guys, at 70, and given the curve of their recording career, are receiving this level of attention is a blessing for us all.

If someone had of posted in 2002 that in 10 years 5 Beach Boys with a total of 250 years singing the bands music between them, will sit around a piano rehearsing for an awards show they have never won, with (cough) modern day artists as surport, but also recording a new album and heading out on a 50 gig tour? They would have been laughed off this board.

That number of years (250) will unlikely ever to be topped. :old

I'm worried about Mike Love and whether his voice is up to it as the lead singer.  That's why I would like to see Al handle lead at least for this performance.

Mike is more than up to that job.  Brian has done a lot of live work, carries his own show, and his voice is pretty good as well. Al always sounds good.

No worries there.  People just want to see their favorite band, live, and still enthused about the Music - the real star!  ;)

But if that same someone would have also posted that those of us on this board would be b*tching and complaining about every element of the "comeback"? THAT would have been believeable.

Do you think that excitement and attention is centered around the Beach Boys or their "special guests"? :-D

Guys, maroon 5 isn't a modern band, they've been around for a decade and their heyday was at least 6 years ago.

Since debuting in 2002, the band has sold over 10 million albums in the United States and nearly 15 million worldwide. Maroon 5's biggest hit was "Moves Like Jagger" featuring Christina Aguilera, selling over 7 million copies worldwide since December 2011, therefore establishing itself among the best-selling singles of all time
