Title: Worm Sync Discovery
Post by: SloopJohnB52 on February 08, 2012, 12:40:03 AM
While working on my DYLW SMiLE mix, I discovered that the "Roll Plymouth Rock" vocal segment syncs up almost perfectly with the opening drums.  (See sample below)  Has anyone noticed this before?  It seems to suggest that at some point the vocals were meant to be mixed in with the drums, perhaps separating the two verses.

No, I think they belong where they were.

It shouldn't be that surprising that the two segments are at the same tempo, but the chords and melodies don't match up at all.

It does work, and contributes to the many faces of SMiLE as a modular album.  However, even with all Brian's chucked out of his brain, I don't think he would have let this one slide in 2004, if it were true.

I may be tone deaf, but I think the two chords in both segments are the same, and the rhythm of the vocals seems to match up with that of the drums.

It may have been the original intent, but was ultimately rejected because he felt it didn't sound quite right.

Me too.  I HATE having a wormhole in my kitchen!

The chord progressions are not the same. One is I IV7 (the 7 is in the melody), the other is I V.

Thanks for clearing this up!

Not sure if it was intended but I think it sounds good. Barnyard vocals also sound good over this same part.
