Few minor points:
Chris Farmer was on bass, not guitar, at least at the shows I saw (2001, 2002, 2004).
Randell was on guitar for the first couple of years he was in the band - he switched to bass when Farmer and Kowalski left (if you listen to boots of the 2004 tour, it was Randell who was Mike's chosen 'king of the surf guitar' at the time).
You've got Cowsill and Totten joining in 2000 but Bardowell and Meros not leaving til 2001. I'm pretty sure that was a straight two-in-two-out swap, in 2001

who was the guy who played bass with them at the Central Park show? Luther Coffee or something? Joe Chemay, who played bass with them during Live at Knebworth?

and does Glen Campbell belong on this list?

a few years ago, my girlfriend at the time asked me how many people had played with the Beach Boys, and it took me like four hours to explain it. we talked about it all during dinner and on the car ride to and from the restaurant and then when we got back to my apartment. every 20 minutes or so she would say "stop! I don't care anymore!" but I was on a roll.

When did Jeff Foskett join BB 1981.? I saw BB  3 times in 1981 + once on TV..Long Beach Ca.. That would  be between Jan+ Aug 81.Foskett wasnt there. 1st time i saw Jeff Foskett with BB would be summer 1982 + at that show Carl Wilson was back..Late summer 82 Hollywood bowl..That was in the days at Bowl they had a large moat in front of stage between the audience + no big screens.. Its been since filled in and seats  + screens added.Im not saying Foskett didnt join band but it must have been after August 1981..

Sal Marquez (flute) - 1971
Roger Newman (horn) - 1971
Glenn Ferris (horn) - 1971
Mike Price (horn) - 1971

This was the horn section for the Central Park show in 1971 (recorded on video)

Sal Marquez plays trumpet though, and sometimes a flugelhorn.

when i saw the group at morehead university ( in kentucky) in feb 1987, stamos was introduced to the crowd and played the 2nd drum kit at the end of the show and the encore. taped it. his being on stage didn't/doesn't bother me.

A few more points:

I think I have a bootleg with Ron Altbach playing in 1978. I could be mistaken (or the boot could be mislabelled) though.
Phil Bardowell played guitar, not keyboards
Cowsill's credit should be keys/drums/perc , as he used to play additional percussion on some songs while Kowalski was still in the band (I remember him playing kettledrum on You Still Believe In Me, for example)
Was Christian really in the band for a year before Farmer and Kowalski left? I thought he joined at the same time they went.

I saw BB band.. 2000 .2002.2004.2008..By the time i saw them in 2002 and beyond..All together 5 times in that time period.Bardowell was not in band. He opened a show in 02. With his band.. And did a SOLO version of a CW song.. On piano that was so soulful and direct,, That moved the whole audience..!But when he did a meet + greet afterword.. I noticed he was buzzed..I suspect without any evidence that..ML didnt like that..PB was an ASSET to the BB band and let go for no apparent reason that was ever described to the rest of us..Actually its NONE of our business..BUT.. The dude does have talent..Now im gonna get attacked ..!I find his vocals more pleasing than CL vocals.Mike"s son..OK.Im in minority ..So let the attacks begin.BUT. One mans meat is another man"s poison.!

I can confirm.. Ron Altbach was in BB... WAVES..Or..Celebration in 1978..I was there...Ron Altbach was a part of BB band in some form in 78..What i dont understand is why he went away. after that..?He was one of ML writing partners like Adrian Baker..People come + people go..$$$..Maybe.I still miss Bob Lizik + Jim Hines.. Lizik caressed his bass like a jazz musician..Why would you let somebody like that go.His grin was all over the stage..$$..I dont know

Ernie Small (unknown) - 1968

I should add that, if I remember correctly, Joel Peskin came back to the band in the late 1990s. And, wasn't Matt Jardine playing percussion in 1983?

From my understanding Phil left on his own...he wanted to do some solo stuff, and also is very involved in the music ministry at the church he's a part of...

I've always wanted to have a comprehensive list like this.  Back in the days when I was updating the setlist archive regularly (I still plan to update...someday), I thought of attempting it, but it seemed like such a daunting task.  I'm surprised that no book has done that yet...

I have Charles Lloyd in the band during their stint at New York's Radio City Music Hall March 1-4, 1979 and Ed Carter appearing with the group on The Merv Griffin show, January 6, 1982.

In 1978 I saw him playing jazz in a bar/restaurant on Santa Monica pier. He was very approachable and seemed to appreciate that I knew who he was. He ended up playing standup bass on a Earle Mankey produced session of mine at Art Laboe's Original Sound recording studio. Very nice guy!

Robert Kenyatta is a percussionist, not a woodwind player (Brad Elliott mistakenly identified him as the latter in his book).
Tony Leo was their drum tech & played some important percussion parts for them when Bobby F. or Mike K. sat in for Dennis on the drum kit.  I'm unaware of him playing any keyboards for them.

no, no, no. even just judging her taste in music, no. I'm sure I've gone on multiple times about how her relationship with music infuriates me to no end. and one of the worst fights we ever got in was when we saw the Beach Boys play in Atlantic City a few years ago and I wanted to get closer to the stage and she said it was already too loud from 500 feet away on the boardwalk.

Aegir, when this thread started, I immediately thought of the the alumnus section of the BeachBoysBand site. Didn't bother going there 'cause I thought everything AGD listed was already there. Not the case - but anyway......I've never heard of these guys. Maybe somebody could fill in the blanks. If I Googled them, I could probably get an indication of who they are. I recogize Ed Teduri from one of the album credits:

RICKY  CASTRATA
MARK  ISHAM
JEFF KAPLIN
JOE  POLLARD
JOHN  RENNER
JOE SAMPLE (Know who he is but didn't know he played on the road with the BB).

Also Eric Aniversario lists Adrian Baker and Jeff Foskett in this September 11, 1982 show:

I assume Adrian left soon after because he is not present at the Jamaica concert in November.

Christian Love (guitar) - November 2006 - 2011
Jeff played at the Westbury Music Fair In March of 1982, so I don't think that your post of Adrian Baker playing all the way into September of 1982 is correct.

This is a photo from the Ohio State Fair in Columbus August 19, 1982. Adrian Baker on keyboards (left) and Jeff Foskett on guitar (right).

(http://i.imgur.com/hyePT.jpg) (http://imgur.com/hyePT)

Also Eric Aniversario lists Adrian Baker and Jeff Foskett in this September 11, 1982 show:

http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/9-11-82.html

I assume Adrian left soon after because he is not present at the Jamaica concert in November.
I guess I stand corrected then. My apologies.

Stanley T. Sichell played guitar in late 1990.

Stanley joined the band onstage during the encores for the Chicago/Beach Boys tour of 1989. In August 1990 he relenquished his crew position to concentrate on playing/singing with the band. Sometime between March and May 1991 he was apparently dropped by the band.

During some shows in early March 1991 (including The Spectrum, Philadelphia PA on the 4th), Daryl Dragon replaced Mike Meros on keyboards.

Adrian Baker didn't join in May 1981.  He was invited to guest at a gig at Westbury Music Fair in early June 1981 and then joined the band for their tour that started on June 20 1981. Jeff Foskett's first gig was South Africa-(Dec 24 1981) after playing with Mike's band that year.  Also Dennis Dragon wasn't just a drummer in 71-72. He filled in on many tours starting in 1968.

Phil Shenale and Sterling Smith both played 78-79. Ron Altbach was not in the band in 73 or 74. He joined in 75.

Ian, a fan's review of the 11/13/74 Shippenburg show mentioned Altbach's presence.  Ron has told me his first gig was the day before, November 12, at  the Convention Center in Niagara Falls NY. :)

I need to revise this - I belive at the MSG show, Daryl played ALONGSIDE Meros, prior to taking over for him for a few shows.

I was gonna ask you about that Craig! Either way, that would have been something to see. I didn't know Daryl joined the Beach Boys on stage since he left in 1972 and then joined Al's band in 1999. Maybe Daryl was on piano or organ and Meros played the keyboards, but either one could have been playing multiple keyboards.

... but anyway......I've never heard of these guys. Maybe somebody could fill in the blanks ...

... ERNIE SMALL ...

I recall hearing that The Ernie Small Band backed up the BBs in 1968.  Perhaps he was the leader of the horn section they used back then which consisted four or five guys on stage, each sitting behind one of those little bandstand boxes like they had on the Lawrence Welk show.  From the concert I saw that summer, my recollection is that the guys in the horn section were seated behind the BBs but not as far back as Dennis on the drum kit, and they would stand up whenever it was time for them to play.  This was during the white suit era, and while some have stated that the white suits and bandanas looked uncool, at the time they were a big improvement over the striped shirts.  But having the a horn section sitting behind those bandstand boxes (I'm probably using the wrong term here) seemed totally uncool to me for a rock band, like something an old geezer like Murry (who was younger then than I am now) would have suggested and for some reason the guys went along with.  Brian was in the audience at the concert I attended (in San Diego) and I had the impression he was there to see how the guys and their current backing musicians sounded.  (And Ian, if you're reading this, I will get back to you very soon with more details!)

I'm kind of confused. Did Adrian Baker come and go between 1981 and 1982? An audience recording of the March 1982 Westbury Music Fair confirms that Jeff was there, but Adrian wasn't.

Jay, by far the best performance of Adrian Baker's career with the Beach Boys was on July 5, 1981 in Long Beach, California.

If that was the best he could do, perhaps he should have sought out another profession.  ;D Although, being Mike Love's touring groupie probably paid well.  >:D  ;)

Adrian was gone by late '81, but came back by June of '82 (yes, he and Jeff were BOTH there at that point, Jeff singing most of the falsetto parts).  Adrian was playing guitar & a lot of electric piano while Bruce was on the baby grand...for the shows Brian played, Adrian was moved to mostly, or exclusively, guitar while Brian & Bruce handled the pianos.

Many thanks for all the corrections and additions - I took the basics from Eric's splendid setlist archive and, as wonderful as it is, there are inevitably a few gaps.

AGD, thank you for reminding me of Eric's setlist archive.  Yes, WOW, it truly is excellent, and it's been a while since I visited.

Thanks!  It's been a while since I've updated, although I've been meaning to for 2 years now.  I'm looking for a way to automate submissions.  Meaning that contributors could fill out an online form, submit it, have it automatically formatted, and have the formatted file waiting for me to approve it with a few clicks.  If anyone with some programming savvy could help out with this, it would be greatly appreciated!

I might be able to do something like that -- is your server set up to use any particular programming language (e.g. ASP pages, server-side JaveScript, Perl, Python, etc)?

Cheers,

You must be mistaken either about Foskett or about the date. Foskett only met Mike Love in 1979. He toured in Mike's Endless Summer band in 79 and 80, then joined the touring BBs when Carl quit, in 1981.

RICKY  CASTRATA

Do they mean Richie Cannata? This might be a joke name for him.

JOE  POLLARD

Joe briefly played drums for The Grass Roots in early 1972. I think this was before he was with The Beach Boys

JOHN  RENNER

Renner played sax with The Beach Boys in 1991.

EDDIE TUDURI

Eddie was with the Beach Boys sometime in the early 70s, it says on his website. He's also played drums with Chilliwack, Rick Nelson and others.

According to Ian and Jon's book, Joe Pollard provided extra percussion during early to mid '73. Ed Tuduri played percussion and drums from late '73 to early '74.

The last few years we've lost too many good people much too soon: Les, Derek Bill, Coach Bob Haines, Greg Larson... brings it home, and hard - this thing's not going to last forever, so maybe we should all just try to get along while it does ?
