Title: 2012 Celebration Concerts. Smiley Smilers Suggestions Thread (non setlist)
Post by: Pretty Funky on January 02, 2012, 03:17:29 PM
As has been mentioned, the powers that be read this site. Lots of thoughts to-date on how to make this year a success so a thread to group them may be in order.

My wish-list.

Few, if any Hawaiian shirts.
No cheerleaders.
No weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllll intros.
Brian not to wear a watch.
Lots of Stamo's. (Just joshing!)
Either Dave or Bruce not wearing hats. Three is too many and Mike has the history.

others?

Mike Love to get a dedicated 15 minute slot to do some long awaited stand-up comedy.

Someone (bonus points if not Mike Love) awkwardly shoehorning in references to (Delete as applicable):

a) Reagan
b) the Arab Spring
c) Jeff's waistline
d) Stamos' inherent failings as a Beach Boy, American, and human being.
e) The Beach Boys touring harder than any band ever
f) Brian's teleprompter
g) The dialogue involved in D being written on F.

Al Jardine finally getting his guitar at a suitable volume.

In place of cheerleaders, strippers.

In place of Stamos, strippers.

In place of Brian's keyboards, decks.

Mike and Al must grow long beards for the occasion and Brian needs to wear a robe. Oh and Bruce needs to grow a mustache.

But most importantly there needs to be a big build up for Brian's first appearance with Mike at the piano pounding out a heart wrenching rendition of 'Brian's Back' with Al, Bruce, David and John Stamos on backup and a montage of The Beach Boys on Full House appearing in the background. The room then goes dark and fireworks set off, Brian is lowered onto the stage by being attached to a rope but not before gliding across the arena and the audience goes crazy. Brian takes a microphone and sits down at the piano and they sing an extended coda for 14 minutes uttering Brian is back which eventually changes to the 'Shortenin' Bread riff. Mike starts to cry and goes in for a hug and Brian looks at his watch. The surviving members of The Grateful dead come on stage and they and the Beach Boys dive right into 'Okie From Muskogee'. :)

The band must wear the striped shirts and khaki pants.

Bruce, no short shorts and leave your mic alone.
Mike, no Stamos mother jokes or Dennis 'save it...he's not here' line.
Brian, no lighters.

But serious. I like the idea of some kind of input by the nights audience to pick a few songs.

I really hope some out of touch Capitol promoter doesn't read these and actually ask John Stamos to tour with the band...or any other of these ridiculous (awesome  ::)) ideas...

Ok, ok, I know mine are a little silly. But I am deadly serious about the decks.

True that. And if they played at Red Rocks, I might die.

My biggest request:
No cheerleaders!  The BB were stripped of their dignity enough in the 90's by the use of cheerleaders.

Other requests:

Bring in Matt Jardine, Billy Hinsche, and Ed Carter, and maybe Christian Love too.

Let each Beach Boy speak and say a little something at least once per show. Mike is a great emcee, but we would love to hear the others say stuff too.

$100 tickets?  100-song setlist!!!!

Bring back some of the early instrumentals.

At least one song from every album, even KTSA (which hasn't had a song performed since 1996 I think, when they did a one-off performance of School Day)

Very good. I had the idea to start a "reunion concert - no go's"-thread but I'll just mention it here.

So, as said, these are no go's, something that definitely shouldn't happen.

- dedicating "Do you wanna dance" to Dennis. I know they had a hit with it but it's not very tastefull imo to dedicate this average song which isn't even a Beach Boys original. That guy wrote so many great songs, so do one of those or take something else out of the Beach Boys catalogue. DYWD was never played as nice as the studio recording sounds by any incarnation of the BBs (solo included)

- hawaiian shirts. Just please, please, please don't make it such a freak show. The clothes Mike, Al and Bruce were wearing at the Reagan event in february was fine.

- too much talking in between songs. Of course they need to get their breath but all these really dumb and Vegas lounge act style monologues that we've heard in the past like "we won't do any of these old car songs", Mike going down during "Wheeeeeeeeeen" and a sound effect being played like his back is cratching afterwards,

- mentioning which song is played next and on which album it appeard (if any). This is Bruce's specialty and it is just terribly annoying. People know all of the songs anyway so you don't have to interrupt the intros to the songs.

- shorts. No shorts !!!

- Stamos. 'nuff said

- too many cover songs. There's enough Beach Boys material, so it's not necessary to play "Why do fools fall in love?" "Summertime blues" if it wasn't a hit by the BBs (I expect of course they play Sloop John b. etc)

- not mentioning and playing stuff from Smile. They just had a hit album with Smile and they should mention it plus of course playing at least one more song from it than just GV and H&V.

- too much fun-in-the-sun material. I dearly love the pre-Today! era but they shoudln't focus on it entirely. Throw in some "Carolione, no" or "Time to get alone"-like material. After one or two of those songs you could still another of those 3 billion surf songs to lighten the mood.

- not playing anything from the new album. I think this is a given. New album is about to be released, so play something from it - and that doesn't mean Do It Again

Again, please don't let this turn out to be a freak show as so many Beach Boys celebrations were. This is the last time and it should be tasteful. At least once in their later carreer it should be done right and with care, not just looking at the $-signs

Bruce on keyboards with Bob Harris looking on

Jeez....So many 70 year olds that need to be told how to dress! :lol

Another request.

The band is going to be handling so many of the backing vocals but could we have one song, any song, sung only by Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce and David with David on guitar. (Jeff may need to be added for guitar and falsetto.)

A decent "soundcheck" before the show, so they don't spend the first several songs getting in tune

Oh yes. That's something that needs to be in the show. At least one acapella tune (Their hearts were full of spring) would be nice too.

I hope they are professional enough to do this and give their fans a great show. Right now each oneof the boys has to work his freaking as$ off. Everything else would be disappointing at least. I hope they realize how important this is (to us fans, maybe they themselves don't give a damn)

Should be fun ticking these off during the year and we can take some credit for the tours success. ;D

Very good suggestions! Not much to add...

Brian: no jokes of any kind, play the same song as the rest of the band
Al: no messing around with guitar amp levels, do not mention Big Sur
Bruce: not allowed to clap, not allowed to walk around the stage
David: play on all songs
Mike: do not be yourself

I stand by all my suggestions upthread.

Except, no Carl and Dennis holograms, as that would be in bad taste. They should get the Tupac Hologram instead.

Sorry, I'm in the other side.

So...

Brian, tell any joke, you want.
Al, wear your hair as you like.
Bruce, clap in your shorts!
David, play on it all.
Mike, be your awesome gregarious self!

And, just for kiddies, Stamos!  ;)

Brian: You do the "chicken" dance this time. Hell, do a lot of dancing!
Al: You take most of the lead vocals during the obvious 15 minute Beatles medley.
Bruce: Drop those shorts to your ankles and perform your own take on experimental dance.
David: Share some beverages with the crowd by throwing heavy glass bottles of whiskey (or cheap wine) into the audience.
Mike: Fast a lot on this tour; consist on nothing but beer and ice cream. Learn the banjo. Become a Mormon.

That is how it should be, hands down!
I would still go to their concert if the entire thing was Ding Dang/ Shortenin Bread, AS LONG AS BRIAN PLAYS THE MOOG

I didn't read through all of the ideas that have been shared yet, but I did have a couple of thoughts as to what I'd like to see.

01.  Personally, as a nod to last Autumn's release, I'd love for the guys to include songs like "Cabinessence", "Wonderful", "Our Prayer" and (most of all) "Surf's Up" as a regular part of their set.  The early setlist returns from opening night (while awfully encouraging) didn't include these songs, and I think that it would be a gesture really welcomed by the crowd (as an aside, the vibrations I'm picking up are telling me that June 29th, in some place called Darien Lake, NY would be just a great time to perform "Surf's Up" - not quite sure what to make of it, but fellas, if somehow you're reading this, it might be a good idea).  ;D

02.  I think it would be really cool for the band to play a few shows in Hawaii.  As an upstate New York land-lubber, I'm sold on the magical image of the place, and to me, just as California is the epicenter of the fun and sun side of the Beach Boys, Hawaii suggests the spiritual essence of the ocean, and of the group.  Also, it occurs to me that, while admittedly unsubtle, there are worse ways of celebrating fifty years together as a group than by ending your tour playing in the 50th state.

03.  I think we all want this, but I'm really rooting for a blu ray concert release at the end of all this.  If not all taken from one terrific show, I'd like to see the performances come from different venues and cities that say 'Beach Boys' (Los Angeles, hopefully Hawaii).  Failing that, places / performances of note (NYC, hopefully Europe, opening night, closing night of the tour, etc.) would be welcome.
