No songs stick out but I remember Friends didn't impress me at age 12 when I first heard it. Yet every single time I played it I liked it more. Now it's a classic to my ears. Smiley has grown on me to quite a bit over the last five odd years. I suppose I like the instrumentals a lot more than I did as a kid. I can't imagine Surfin' USA or Pet Sounds without them now.

When I first heard "Livin' With A Heartache", I HATED it with a passion. Why would The Beach Boys record a country song in 1980? I thought of it as "Long Tall Texan" part two. But then I heard the version from the Philadelphia 1980 show, I started to really like it. Strangely enough, "Livin' With A Heartache" sounds to me like the most Beach Boys sounding song on the "Keepin' The Summer Alive" album, even though Carl is the only actual Beach Boy on the studio version. But the harmonies sound like vintage Beach Boys(at least to me).

One song i just can't get into is cotton fields.. It doesn't feel like a beach boys song at all and knowing that Al Jardine was the one behind it makes me sick to my stomach :/. the song friends is pretty awkward,boring and cheesy. lol

I used to dislike Smiley Smile and Wild Honey (the album). Now I love them both.

When I was 12 the drums at the start of Do It Again creeped me out so I always skipped it, now I adore that drum sound and the song is pretty special too!

When I first began to listen to Pet Sounds, I didn't know any other beach boys songs, and my dad (and my friend) kept telling me to listen to Good Vibrations, 'as it's their best song ever!'

So, being me, I refused to go onto YouTube, but I went to my local record fair that Sunday, managed to find one (50p I'll have you know!) and eventually returned home to play it, expecting to be blown away. Dropped the needle, and... 'What the hell is this?' It just didn't appeal to me at all. Now, it's a completely different situation. And looking at it now, the strange thing was that I only knew Pet Sounds, so it show how it truly doesn't fit in with the album. 

Oh, and I had listened to the Purple Chick SMiLE before I heard Smiley Smile, But I knew the singles, and the other SMiLE songs were quite distant on my mind (honestly, back then, you could play me the Smiley Wind Chimes, and I might have said it was the SMiLE version). It honestly was very anti-climatic to me - Now i see how different it is, and respect it for that, but I couldn't tell that at the time, and so didn't really enjoy it.

For some time ago I never realised why many BB fans liked Love You, I couldnt stand Mona, Johnny Carson, and many more. Now its my favourite post-Smile album, or maybe i prefer Smiley Smile more....

I still hate most of 15 Big Ones and everything post-Love You, any reason why I shouldn't????  I guess Keepin The Summer Alive is a good song.

I hated Let Us Go On This Way for a few days after I heard it, then had some sort of epiphany and became obsessed with that song  ;D

How could you insult Al Jardine, the composer of classics like Susie Cincinatti and Loop De Loop. ;D But seriously, Al's cottonfields was a great song that stayed close to Al's folk roots. Al needs to do a solo album of folk music because Al is great at folk music.

actually i realize now that slop john b is amazing and i actually grew loving to the sound of it. :)
al jardine style was so different then brian's and i'm sure most of us are more brian fans.

i'm not a huge fan of folk music..the only reason i became a bb fan was because of brian's sweet melodies and how he composed so much in 2/3/4 minute songs :) even dennis was a better composer than al.

I'm sorry, EVEN Dennis? He's like, second only to Brian!

Ditto to "Add Some Music." Never cared for the corny lyrics, plus it kinda fell into a category of music for me that was in between a slow ballad and a slightly uptempo song. But it's grown on me.

Thus rendering the other guys totally worthless and not worth the time. Ah, I truly love this way of thinking and am glad it's so common.

the other beach boys helped with the vocals and had a few gems on their own (be with me,forever) but brian wilson was the full behind them..if it wasn't for him none of us would even be beach boys fans. lol

For me it has to be the album Smiley Smile.......
After listening to Pet Sounds album and some of the Classic era hits of 1962-66, In my very early days of becoming a Beach Boys fan which of course hooked me. I was very shocked and puzzled when I first heard Smiley Smile (Which was the 2nd BB Album I'd heard) I was thrown as too why it seemed to my ears a massive step backwards from Pet Sounds & Good Vibrations. For an hour or so after my first listen I almost toyed with the idea of dropping the Beach Boys from my ears. But thank God I'd took the time out to first read the Booklet within the cd case and got some background knowlege about the tracks and about the recordings of Smile. I played Smiley Smile again and listened deeper, then again, and again. And fell in love with that album and started buying as many of the twofers as I could, And the rest is history.... ;D

The first time i heard smiley smile i was so distraught,confused and disappointed :[ i thought it was going 2 be a strong follow up to pet sounds. that was the 2nd album i listened to from the beach boys. After that i did give up on them then i heard a song called "please let me wonder" and i checked out everything and became a fan.

Summer Of Love!

I'm not just making a joke!

When I first stumbled upon it I was red with embarrassment. But lately, I've made it a habit of looking at the video when in the mood for an easy target to laugh at, but then I just end up playing it over and over and the whole song gets stuck in my head for days on end. I think I actually love the song at this point!

I don't think I've ever hated any BB or BB-related solo song...MAYBE disliked.  There were some albums/songs that took a while to get used to, though:

Friends (the album) took a few listens, but by the 8th or 9th listen, it became my favorite album, and has been for the past 20 years or so!

It  took me about 12 years to finally understand the appeal of "Steamboat", but now it's one of my favorite tracks on Holland.

It took me a while to like "Catch A Wave", because I had heard "Sidewalk Surfin" so many times before EVER hearing CAW.

And in the past 2 years or so, I've grown to appreciate Surf's Up (The Album) more than I ever have in the past.

WOW! i think i need maybe 25 years before i consider that album ok..not good not great but halfway decent. lol

Dennis had the songwriting skills to pick up the slack once Brian retired as leader/main songwriter of the group.

Newguy, you seriously need to listen to Pacific Ocean Blue, if listening to Denny's songs on the early 70's efforts still hasn't convinced you.... If you already have listened to it, well, listen to it again!  ;D

Some of my favorite songs of all time is "you & I" , "be with me" & "forever". Dennis did definately have a few gems.

The person posting as Newguy likes Dennis and knows that people get riled up when he denies Denny's contributions. That's why he does it.

Yeah, I can relate to that - after disowning the BB's for some years over it, I all of a sudden have "Still Cruisin'" rolling through my sorry head.  I ain't playin' the video tho'!

That's not true. Dennis does have amazing songs i'm just comparing him to his older brother that's all even though it's not fair. lol

When I first heard Add some music I thought "this is incredibly mediocre". It's currently my favorite song of all time (but I'll find new favorite song in a couple of days).

Liking Still Cruisin is UNFORGIVABLE!!!!

y'what? And I'm the person who likes Summer In Paradise - I own the U.S and U.K versions!

Still trying to find my SIP copy at a cheap price because i already own Still Cruisin. ;D
