Title: Spark In The Dark - Funky Pretty
Post by: SloopJohnB on December 24, 2011, 01:44:11 AM
Here's an excerpt of Jon Stebbins' new book. Page 131, talking about "Funky Pretty": "...the song, originally titled 'Spark In The Dark'..."

AGD's been telling us for years that "Spark In The Dark" is not "Funky Pretty":

Also something called 'Spark In The Dark', also from '72

Not, as is frequently assumed, a nascent "Funky Pretty". It's Brian noodling around on a piano for several minutes - starts off sounding like "Loop De Loop", has a bit of a wander and ends up sounding alarmingly like "Chain Reaction Of Love". No vocals.

CATP Sessions:
Spark In The Dark
January 21st. Does Not Circulate. The title of this would link it to Funky Pretty, apparently this is a demo that would morph into "Chain Reaction of Love" later.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the Holland track, Brian noodling on the piano and throwing out known riffs ("Loop") and future riffs ("CROL")
"Spark In the Dark" is NOT "Funky Pretty". It's about 12-14 minutes of Brian noodling on the piano - I forget now how it starts out ("Loop De Loop" rings a bell) but it ends up sounding awfully like "Chain Reaction Of Love".

So who to believe? I'm a huge fan of "Funky Pretty", it would be nice if this issue was finally settled.

It has been awhile, but my memory jives with AGD's description, except I remember long portions of organ noodling as well as piano.  I remember, when I had freer access to the track, listening to it over and over again looking for some latch to connect it to FP, to no avail.

Dear Santa:

Please give us a CD's worth of Funky Pretty trax for Christmas; including but not limited to demos, Brian singing the lead throughout, instrumental and acappella, and the multi trax. Please Santa. Do this and I promise to be good for a whole year.
