Title: Can we make enough noise to affect setlists on the 2012 tour?
Post by: b00ts on December 18, 2011, 12:40:32 PM
I know, this is a big business venture and BRI does what it wants, etc, etc.

However, don't underestimate the power of our community here. We are the ones who buy the box sets, we are the ones who spread the word-of-mouth, we are the ones who were listening to Sunflower and Surfs Up when those albums weren't even in print just over a decade ago.

To that end, does anyone here think that we at smileysmile.net can make enough noise to get even a couple of our fan favorite tracks played on the tour? Imagine...

- This Whole World
- Honkin' Down The Highway
- Aren't You Glad
- The Night Was So Young
- Country Air
- Meant For You
- It's About Time
- Friends
- Slip On Through

After all, we know that people from The Beach Boys' organization read this board.. I am not talking about another petition, I think one is enough* but maybe somehow we can all get behind a group of five or six songs and show 'em that we all want to hear 'em!

* http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/blondieandricky/signatures/page/2 - for including Blondie and Ricky. If you haven't signed it yet and you value their time with the BB's, take a second to sign it. It couldn't hurt!

It's not far-fetched to believe that the "powers that be" might check in here and who knows..maybe pick up a few tips from the mega fans.  It's sort of an open secret that there are eyes looking at the Rolling Stones board that I visit.  On the last 2 tours....two of our favorite tracks were finally performed for the first time....coincidence?  Maybe.  But it's a strong possibility.

To make things easier if they DO check, we should somehow boil our list down to 10 tracks that we all would love to see.  Maybe like The Smiley Smile's official suggestion box.

But anyway, "Slip On Through" would be amazing.

Paul McCartney also took advice from his fans, adding "Mrs. Vanderbilt" to his setlist and others that we never thought we'd hear. If he can do it and the Stones can do it, The Beach Boys can do it.

I do feel, however, that Brian is a bit weird when it comes to performing Dennis' material - it seems like perhaps the manner in which Dennis died (suddenly and far too soon) makes it tough for him to revisit Dennis' material.

Be Here in the Morning! or Wake the World!

I don't care if the rest of the set is the Surf Medley, the Car Medley, and Mike going "whennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" for 45 minutes, just play some stuff from Friends!

Maybe a doodle link where people can add their own alternatives, to see which ten (four? síx?) are the most popular?

California Saga
Sail On Sailor
It's OK
Good Timin

I'd be happy to hear

Did they ever do this one live?  I love it, but it seems like a longshot.  From Sunflower, I'd imagine This Whole World, Add Some Music or maybe Forever (as a Dennis tribute) would be more likely.  I would love to see them do This Whole World, where they pack in more ideas in two minutes than most bands do on entire album!

Yes, but I don't have time until after Christmas, so if anyone wants to do it earlier, please do.

That is the perfect description of This Whole World. What a singularly fantastic tune.

I tried making some noise, but the only thing I affected was my neighbours sleep.

I can't say if they ever did it live but my guess is no?  And yes it's definitely a long shot...in the scope of a 50th Anniversary show...every precious spot in the set list is crucial and must be made with meticulous care...not a song to waste.  With that scope, I'm afraid "Slip On Through" won't make the cut.

There's more than a few I'd love to see them tackle, but, if I had to pick one, "All I Wanna Do" would be my pick.  That would be sensational.

With 50 shows scheduled I'm sure the sets will have some variation as to non-hits and album cuts. I just hope Brian makes all the shows. :)

I personally think "All I Wanna Do" might be a little tough for ol' Mike.

But here are my choices (staying within reason) for songs I'd like to see on this tour:

  • "Please Let Me Wonder" (Brian)
  • "This Whole World'" (Brian)
  • "Vega-Tables" (Al)
  • "Good Timin'" (Brian)
  • "Sail on Sailor'" (Blondie/Brian?)

There's a live "Slip on Through" on Get the Boot.

Well there might be a reason why it is the perfect description:

It was made by one Andrew G. Doe originally!

Ooooh, interesting. But it'd only make sense with Dennis or Carl doing the lead... So I don't see this one happening, unfortunately.

I'd love to hear "This Whole World" performed again, not to mention my very favorite BB song, "WILD HONEY"!

here's my top "ten"...

That's Not Me (one of my favorites with a shared Mike/Brian lead)
Please Let Me Wonder (ditto. Kiss Me Baby would also be nice)
Meant For You/Friends (an underrated slice of Beach Boy brilliance)
Wonderful/Look/CIFOTM/Surf's Up (one of the greatest stretches of music ever created. Mike has said repeatedly how much he loves 'Wonderful')
Johnny Carson (how GREAT would this be?)
Cabin Essence (just sing your lines and SMiLE, Mike  ;) )
Your Summer Dream (not well-known, but one of my favorite "summer" tunes. and isn't this tour all of our summer dream come true?!!)
We're Together Again (another gem that needs to see the light of day, and a fitting reunion song if ever there was one)
Aren't You Glad (another great Mike/Brian vocal trade-off, and another underrated favorite of mine)
All I Wanna Do (gorgeous and rarely heard. easily one of the finest Wilson/Love collaborations)

Somewhere in the set--a mini-SMiLE set:
Our Prayer
H&V
Child is Father of the Man
Surf's Up

If they did 'Our Prayer', I would sh*t my pants and the pants of the person next to me. It so wouldn't happen, though..... would it?

Not unless they severely lowered the key and/or used Foskett for the high part.

On this subject... I have seen Brian live a few times and it seems that most of the songs are played in the key in which they were written. I can imagine Brian being bullish about ths because he likes to hew closely to the records. Does anyone know of examples where they transposed songs?

These kids are ages past their prime, but doubting they could pull off "Our Prayer", especially knowing they're going to have others helping with vocals? Come awn, naow.

listen, I'm a worse singer than Brian and if there were five of me and Jeff Foskett and we practiced a lot, we could pull off Our Prayer. come on guys. the Mike & Bruce band does Their Hearts Were Full of Spring perfectly with, just Mike, Bruce, Randell and Scott.

The show should be a two hour ambient version of Mt Vernon and Fairway! That would make one fan very happy :)

I believe they used to drop WIBN down to C (on the Roxy show, for one), but now Jeff takes that lead.
