Title: 2012 Tour fantasy setlist
Post by: Iron Horse-Apples on December 18, 2011, 07:33:33 AM
OK guys, it's always great to hear the hits, but what surprises would you like to hear?

Personally I would like to hear all the era's of the Beach Boys career represented in some way.

Here's a few of mine, in no particular order

Vega-Tables
Cool Cool Water
Chug-a-lug
You Still Believe In Me
A Thing Or Two
Wake The World
Solar Systems
Goin' On

I'll expect the usual hits from Mike, Cottonfields from Al, possibly Disney Girls from Bruce, maybe one of the surf instrumentals for David, and some Pet Sounds tracks plus GV and H&V for Brian. I don't think this will deviate too much from the general repertoires we have heard before. I am going to be there on 4/27 (this is 10 minutes from my house), and I'll be excited but with realistic expectations.

I'm guessing that the setlist will be tailored to the venue: meat & potatoes for places like the NO show, extended GH with a frosting of catalog for the majority, and semi-deep catalog for the UK shows. The foundation will likely be Sounds Of Summer. Solo material ? maybe, but one or two.

Plus a few 'new' tracks, natch.

I would say that there is a good chance that they will do some Smile material. After all, it currently is their latest album.

This would be nice well rounded set (a mix of wishful thinking and realistic expectations)  Trust me, I wasn't happy about adding "Disney Girls" but Bruce has to have his song in the set.

California Girls
Do It Again
I Can Hear Music
Surfer Girl
Cotton Fields
Be True to Your School
In My Room
Don't Worry Baby
(Car Song Set)
Little Deuce Coupe
409
Shut Down
I Get Around
(Pet Sounds Set)
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Sloop John B
God Only Knows
Caroline No
(Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar set)
Here She Comes
Sail On Sailor
Hold On Dear Brother

Disney Girls
Help Me Rhonda
Do You Wanna Dance?
Dance, Dance, Dance
(SMiLE set)
Heroes and Villians
Vega-tables
Cool, Cool, Water
Surf's Up
Good Vibrations
(ENCORE)
Surfin' USA
Barbara Ann
Fun, Fun, Fun

Some personal favorites I doubt they'll play:

I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
You Still Believe In Me
Slip On Through
All This Is That
Lookin At Tomorrow
All I Want To Do

I think in terms of the UK shows the setlist will likely be similar to Mike and Bruce's 2008 tour.

As for a personal wish list i'd like to hear All I Wanna Do (with todays technology it's possible to get close to that sound), Stoked (with David on lead guitar), a rejigged version of Keepin' the Summer Alive (maybe with Al on lead) and Add Some Music (not hard to imagine seeing as Brian plays it a lot and the band played it in the 90's). Now it's just a case of keeping my eyes peeled for dates :3d

Andrew, what's the chances of them doing the RFH?

I hope they play Kokomo in the first 10 minutes or that  :angry woman who is always in the seat in front of me and incessantly screams "do kokomo!!1!11!!!" at all the BB and BW shows won't shut up until they do it!

Andrew, do you anticipate a release of a solid version of California Feeling, either on tour or lp or both?  \\

Am I alone in wanting the version with Carl's vocals to be fuly realized with all of the voices coming together ??

"Sounds of Summer" will probably be the foundation for most of the shows.  The Beach Boys legacy is based on the records they made from 1961-1966 and that will be what the audiences will be expecting to hear.  As much as many of us appreciate the post 66' catalog those songs are basically unfamiliar to Joe Public with a few exceptions.  They have enough material from "Surfin Safari" through "Pet Sounds" incorporating "Good Vibrations" and possibly some of the more familiar "SMiLE" tunes to form the basis of a set that will please most.

That would leave them room to slip in 4-5 deeper cuts into the set along with 2-3 songs off the new LP which in essence will probably fill up your standard set including encore which in my opinion should follow the format of BW's encores.

Edit: Some further generalizations:

* There will likely be at least one acapella track in the set whether it be "And Your Dream Comes True", "You're Welcome" or "Our Prayer".

* Each Beach Boy will likely get at least one spotlight lead vocal performance which shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.

* I wouldn't be surprised if Dennis and Carl each get a tribute song as well as both "God Only Knows" and "Forever" are familiar/beloved material where they can obviously seamlessly slip them into the set.

* "Kokomo" will be part of the setlist each night.  Like it or not it's as familiar to Joe Public as the early catalog and has the added bonus that it's a great audience singalong.

Agreed.  But I wouldn't be surprised if Brian went off stage for this one.

I'm not so sure about that. I think it is a possibility that Brian might be the one to do the "Carl" part on the song.

Here are my things I hope make the setlist:

But here are my choices (staying within reason) for songs I'd like to see on this tour:

  • "Please Let Me Wonder" (Brian)
  • "This Whole World'" (Brian)
  • "Vega-Tables" (Al)
  • "Good Timin'" (Brian)
  • "Sail on Sailor'" (Blondie/Brian?)

Well I'll be the first to want to see that but I highly doubt Brian would be able to reach those notes today.  He's already delegated "Wouldn't It Be Nice"  to Jeff Foskett to sing...I'm not sure the "Carl" part on "Kokomo" is any better for him.

I'm not expecting a lot of deep tracks, but there are two I'd love to see -- one which Mike's band has already knocked out of the park, last time I saw them in Sydney.

One is "You Still Believe In Me" -- the ultimate reunion song.

The other?  "Vegetables".  Could go down well in a mainstream set as a comic-relief break, and it'd be a nice tip of their hat to the die-hards!

Cheers,
Jon Blum

Matt Jardine does a killer version of ICHM in Al's Endless Summer Band shows. He comes closest to Carl in emotion than anyone I've seen perform this song. Put Matt in the reunion band, and let him and Jeff handle Carl's parts! Jeff and Matt both have the highest respect for Carl.

We can't get Carl back :'( , but at least they can do right by him.

You mean that song that is 80% a solo Brian performance?

David Marks to sing Forever !

I second that -- perfect choice. David already does some of Denny's songs in his solo shows. The other possibility would be Carl B. Wilson, but that would probably only be for L.A. show/s.

In my opinion Brian has already perfected the ideal blend of hits/deep catalog in his shows, especially when he's just doing "the repertoire" rather than promoting a new work.  I really hope that gets carried over as the model for the 50th tour.  I can't imagine any segment of the audience would be unhappy with that type of show.

As far as fantasy goes, this (http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/5-11-02a.html) setlist is totally insane.

Brian's band *did* do that kind of show - in 2002. He's steadily gone for more hits and fewer deep cuts, unfortunately.
I'd love to see something halfway between that set and the sets that Mike & Bruce & David did in the UK in 2008 - like this one I saw http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/4-12-08.html .
I'd be very surprised if we don't get a fifty song set, actually. Fifty songs for fifty years in a fifty-date tour.

Absolutely, with Brian singing the high harmony like he did on the original.

And there was a clip online a while ago of Brian playing and singing a snippet of Long Promised Road. I think THAT should be the Carl tribute song, with Brian singing it.

Quote

Well, what happened is that Brian started to do two distinct kinds of shows, starting in 04 or so. He would do the album shows -- things like the Smile, Pet Sounds 40th, TLOS and Gershwin shows -- and summer hits tours. In the first kind of show, he would cram a lot of hits in the first set because (at least for Smile, TLOS and Gershwin) you're slamming the audience with 40 minutes of unfamiliar music in the second set.

Things were always a little different for the PS shows because Pet Sounds actually contains WIBN, GOK, Sloop (and Caroline), all of which are known in a broader context. So there were more rarities in the first half for nearly all PS shows.

I think the summer hits tours were kind of an unfortunate development. In 07 or 08 they tried a stripped down band, for example. I think this was when the BW org thought they had a chance to actually compete for some of the Mike and Bruce engagements -- but I think it ultimately fizzled because Brian (and the band) was not that interested in actually doing the shows. Darian refused to do them, which was why you saw Gary Griffin subbing on keys.

The exception to all of this was the fall 2009 tour in the U.S., which had no album to promote, but was with Darian. It was a "hits" show in some ways -- the setlist was definitely not 2002-level quirky -- but it was still more expansive than the abbreviated summer dates. For whatever reason, it was Brian's high point as a live performer -- we will indeed be lucky if he's that engaged nexy year.

Yup -- the song that is about breaking up over and over again but still ending up together.

And which, musically, has a coda in which Brian Wilson sings the melody, then is echoed by Mike, then the whole band comes together for a huge burst of full-color harmonies.

Tell me that isn't the reconciliation right there in the music...

I'll third, fourth, and fifth that -- but we know Brian finds that song really sad, so it might be tough.  Another option for a Dennis tribute, bit left field... would be for David to do "Pacific Ocean Blues".  With Mike on the mow-m'm'mow bass part.  The song's got a good claim to band content -- Mike's lyrics -- plus it's a track from a recent hit album; it hits all their favorite environmental themes; and it's danceable enough to maybe be okay for promoters who want a high-energy hits-oriented set...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

I think it'd be great to mix/medley-ize some tunes with the same riffs and such...in a non-cheesy way, if possible..

like Be True To Your School and Some of Your Love...hell, throw in "Mike Come Back to LA" in the chorus for a giggle.

Or Goin' On then into All Dressed Up For School.

I've got some others up my sleeve for later posting.

This is a good question, and obviously the new album must figure into the equation. It would be nice to hear some new songs from that work,.. I think the Beach Boys could get enthused about some new music. It  would be great to hear sets from Smile and Pet Sounds. That would take care of roughly 60 minutes. It would be nice to hear some tunes from the Sixties and Seventies. perhaps an hour set. Perhaps an emphasis could be on  the Wilson and Love compositions. Some of Dennis and Carl's tunes could be done by Brian or other members. My dream song to hear live would be Rio Grande.

Other mixings I'd enjoy:
Lana/Desert Drive/Salt Lake City
Heart and Soul/Sweetie/Love Ya
Help Me Rhonda (with harmonica line from Ronda)
Summer Means New Love/After the Game (a solo for Dave)
Darlin/Thinkin' Bout My Baby (invite The Honeys on stage for this one)
Deirdre/We're Together Again
I Just Got My Pay/Marcella
Big Sur (mix the original version with the Holland version)
Cool Cool Water/Californa (using the "water, water, get yourself in the cool clear water")
Back Home (make a medley out of all 3 versions)
Trombone Dixie/Had to Phone Ya (start with TD as an instrumental for a minute then go into HTPY)

maybe it's a coooky idea...just something to throw out there to get the rarities on the setlist

Figuring there would be an intermission in the show, I would like to see them close out the first set with a full-fledged Dennis and Carl tribute, with the boys sharing thoughts on them in it. Brian would speak before the last one. The songs would be:

Baby Blue (Bruce sings Carl's part, Brian sings Dennis' part)

Long Promised Road (Al sings verses, Mike sings the "Hit hard" chorus, Brian sings the "Long Promised Road" section

Forever (as others have suggested, David sings the lead, with Brian on the high harmony like in the original)

Other songs that I'd love to hear:

We'll Run Away

All I Wanna Do

I'll Bet He's Nice (David, Brian, Bruce)

Wake the World (Brian and Al)

Marcella (Al, with Mike)

I  think you're completely ignoring the band's vocal capabilities. Mike singing the chorus to LPR? Modern day Brian singing one of his greatest falsettos cut to tape?

Baby Blue (Bruce sings Carl's part, Brian sings Dennis' part)

I'd love to hear Baby Blue, but I seriously doubt that Bruce could handle that lead...he is a great singer, but his voice just doesn't match that vocal.  If Christian Love were involved, I think he'd do great on that.  And instead of Brian on Dennis' part, I'd put Alan there.

Maybe I am giving the guys too much credit, but I was trying to get them all involved vocally in the tribute to their "brothers, friends and cousins" instead of giving the parts to Christian Love, Matt Jardine or Jeffrey Foskett. I put Brian down for the falsetto on "Forever" based on the posters on this board who say Brian can still sing falsetto when he feels like it.

Oh, come on now.  I could come up with MUCH worse.   :p   Sherry?  Duke Of Earl?  At least all the songs I listed are Beach Boys songs.  And sticking with the catalogue, I think my list would be more of a nightmare if we included Wipe Out, Still Cruisin', and a heaping helping of Summer In Paradise  :lol

That setlist reads like a normal BB's or Brian setlist. Which isn't far off what we will get, I guess.

It's curious to think what we would realistically get from the 'solo' efforts, if anything? Brian and Mike (and Al, if they're doing it) would probably want a song of their own in there, compounded by the fact you have most of Brian's band there. Love & Mercy? Cool Head, Warm Heart?

Brian said on the bloo when asked if they'd do L&M that people would have to wait till 2013 since this tour is a celebration of BB's music, so I doubt any solo efforts will be included. Then again Brian's word isn't necessarily law, so let's just see how things go.

My Top Ten List for the Beach Boys' 50th Anniversary Tour

Beach Boys 50th Celebration Concert Tour - My Top Ten List

By Phil Miglioratti

None of the Beach Boys have asked me, but if they did, here are a few suggestions for the upcoming tour celebrating their 50 year anniversary as a band:

1) Open with "Meant For You"

It is a perfect way to set the stage (pun intended) to send out the core message of the Beach Boys: peace and love. They can play "California Girls" later in the show.

2) Followed by "Friends"

A reunion for the fans but more importantly may this tour be a measure of reconciliation for the group that started with brothers, a cousin, a neighbor and a friend. All the lawsuits, power struggles, tarmac fist fights, stolen royalties and more than we fans will never know of, may each be forgiven. Maybe not forgotten but no longer standing in the way of giving the world joy of a live concert by a band of friends.

3) Then rock on with "Do It Again"
This was the perfect tune to re-record. The lyrics beg for a reunion. The texture of the song straddles the surf & street era and the progressive stage of the Beach Boys career.

4) Reprise the band intro from the Beach Boys' Concert album.
"And now, from Hawthorne, California, to entertain you tonight, with a gala concert and a recording session, the fabulous Beach Boys!" Fred Vail, back then a teenager brash enough to promote a concert and bold to couple it to a recording that became the first live concert album of a rock group to hit #1 on the charts, is the perfect choice to bring them onstage.

5) Honor David Marks
Give him a guitar solo on "Break Away" so we can hear what the original 6 would have sounded like had he not been dismissed from the band. The guitar solo inserted for the single version of this song sounded forced and unrelated to the feeling and flow of this great Brian Wilson song. Maybe David can fill that break with a Beach Boys inspired sound. Murry Wilson may have been greedy (when he engineered David's departure) and David may have been immature in his too-quick reaction to Murry's taunts but it is not too late to make the song a more complete Beach Boy tunes.

6) Keep the break in "Little Girl I Once Knew"
No general managers worrying someone may change from their station when you go into that glorious break - Give us the full song, silence and all! Every second of it! Just like Brian imagined it.

7) "'Cassius' Love vs 'Sonny' Wilson"
Few listeners realize this album-filler, though not an example of a Beach Boys classic, is a grand example of Brian Wilson's understanding of humor and how it can augment the rock ethos. And now, almost a lifetime later, our naivete when first listening to "Our Favorite Recording Sessions,'' and "I'm Bugged at My Old Man" has given way to the realization of how revealing the Love vs Wilson banter was and how painfully accurate was the "I'm Bugged" story-line. I'm not suggesting they perform this cut onstage .. I'm hoping Mike, who has identified his humor as sarcastic, will stay away from anything that sounds sarcastic or causes Brian to feel fear or hurt. I'm not picking sides, just hoping everyone stays with the positivity that Mike preaches in his interviews.

8) Dennis and Carl, please
Bring more than their memory by reminding us of how "Do You Wanna Dance" was a great Dennis lead and how Carl's voice on "God Only Knows" is considered one of the best in rock and roll history. Let their recorded voice take the lead while they are shown bigger than life on a video screen and as the band plays and sings live. They did it for Elvis; why not the most energizing rock band of our time?

9) The Alan Jardine Album
Most of the night will be Brian Wilson - Mike Love tunes (Amen!) but how about a set of songs on which Al sang lead or pushed to the forefront? "Help Me Rhonda" (a #1 hit), "Sloop John B" (Brian took his good idea and turned it into greatness), "The Times They Are A-Changin" (...yet, here are the Beach Boys on world tour!), "Cotton Fields" (Alan's version, please), "Then I Kissed Her" (his lead helped Brian out Spector, Spector), and "Susie Cincinnati" or "Come Go With Me" or Heroes & Villains, or ...

10) "Love & Mercy"
What would it be like to end the concert with the Beach Boys semi-circled behind Brian at the piano singing "Love & Mercy" as the closing hymn, I mean song. A fitting benediction to what will be an amazing live experience and what was an unparalleled career bringing joy to millions across the globe and generations.

P.S. I need your help identifying the 50 heroes & villains who shared the lives and shaped the careers of the Beach Boys - Cast your vote and share your comment http://prayforsurfblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/50th-anniversary-50-beach-boys-heroes.html

And of course, it's not the same falsetto he could crank out without thinking back in 1970. Best call for that today would be Jeff, Matt or Christian.

My #1 wish for this celebration is very simple - that no-one is in any way embarrassed of discomfited. These guys are all (David excepted) pushing or past 70.

Agreed on Jeff and Matt, but best call for falsetto is Christian??  I thought Randall Kirsch was doing the falsettos for the Mike and Bruce band these days. And another guy that's long gone that use to do a pretty good falsetto (except for the Queen Mary gig in 1981) and I thought I'd bring him up now because nobody mentioned him here at all lately - Adrian Baker. Think the "Happy Birthday Brian Wilson" record.

Randell's falsetto impresses me as "effortless and unstrained" and closest to Brian's on the early work, especially the doowop stuff.  I think Brian's voice was amazing on Gershwin.  I imagine Brian will have a full plate of leads.  After all, his and Mike's voices are the signature voices.  The voice is a delicate instrument, subject to irritation from bad air in an airplane, or poor indoor air quality in a venue.  I would suspect that the falsetto voice would suffer the most quickly.  Tricky.

Christian's voice seems to have that "serene" quality that Carl's had. I'm not familiar with his work with his own band and non-BB music.

Some other ideas:

I'd love to hear Brian and Mike doing "It's just a matter of time" with just a piano.
I think it'd be ok if they do Surf City as it's one of Brian's four no. 1 hits. But except for that they should keep the covers to a minimum

All in all I guess we'll hear the "Sounds of summer" and "The warmth of the sun" CD's. Maybe not everything from the latter. In fact I'd be very excited to hear 409 with David playing the solo

I'll be interested to see how they divide Brian and Al's leads as Al usually covered Brian's leads during BB concerts. When they toured in '06, they split a number of leads WIBN, Sloop etc.  and it sounded really good! One of the highlights for me was them on the tag of I Just Wasnt Made for These Times and together on the first chorus of Sloop.  I would like to see Sloop, You're So Good To Me, Breakaway , You Still Believe with Al and Brian switching off on verses which would take some pressure off Brian as well. They did WIBN in a lower key which they would have to do here as well. I can understand why people want to hear original keys and obviously Dont Worry Baby and Warmth of the Sun you'd have to have others sing them but I'd rather hear a song like WIBN dropped in key so Brian and Al can sing it as opposed to Jeff Foskett singing it. It's  BB reunion., the BB should do as many vocals as possible.

BTW,
I really can't decide what I'd like better as an opening. The way Mike & Bruce used the original "Surfin'" recording and then going live into it or "California girls", which - although used many, many times - still is a heck of an opening song ! Maybe they'll do "Do it again" though

It would be great an acoustic opennig set, with all five members sitting around one or two microphones:

Maybe for something like:

Our Prayer
Lahaina Aloha
All I Wanna Do
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring
'Til I Die
All This Is That

Then the normal electric set with 40-45 songs.

And keeping this format for ALL the reunion shows in whatever venue they play!!

I think you might be pleasantly surprised. When Mike & Bruce (& David) have toured the UK in the last few years, they've done very long sets - more than fifty songs - with stuff like 'Til I Die, Everyone's In Love With You, All This Is That, Disney Girls, Sail On Sailor, Heroes & Villains with Bicycle Rider chorus, Good Timin', Forever, Let Him Run Wild, Here Today and more in.
Given that they've got most of Brian's band with them, too, and the need to showcase everyone, I'm betting on the following, based on stuff that's common to both band's sets or which will be politically advisable:
Exactly fifty songs.
Til I Die, Sail On Sailor and Heroes & Villains included (both bands have done these, and H&V gives Al a lead)
Wonderful and Vegetables from Smile (Mike likes Wonderful, and it was a hit single for Brian in the UK and he opened 2002 shows with it, and the BBs used it in the box set tour. Vegetables because it's easy to rehearse and gives Al a lead).
Disney Girls
Lady Lynda/"Little Lady"
All This Is That (a Mike & Al co-write, after all)
California
You Still Believe In Me (Mike's band and Brian's know this one, Al could sing lead)
Here Today (gives Mike a chance to sing on a Pet Sounds song)
Honkin' Down The Highway (Brian and Al just did a remake of it, it's a nod to the hardcore fans but still sounds like it'd fit in with the fun in the sun stuff).
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring
Forever (as a tribute to Dennis, Dave Marks on lead)

And then all the usual hits.

Mike, Bruce & Dave actually did something similar in the 2008 tour - an acoustic set near the start of the second half, with Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, In My Room, Cool Head Warm Heart, Everyone's In Love With You, All This Is That and Til I Die. So you might get your wish...

I don't think there is any reason to expect or include songs from their respective solo efforts. That would be out of place here, I think.

Harmony-wise, I think Mike, Al and Bruce will sing their usual parts, Brian will sing Carl's and Jeff will sing Brian's original. There will be duplications and fullness because of the number of singers there. Besides, Bruce has historically sung Brian's harmony part (BTW, watching concert videos I'm increasingly in awe of Bruce's proficiency as a backup singer... always in tune, always blended, great rhythmic sense...).

As for the leads, it would make sense if they avoided songs that would have to be lead-sung by band members, even if it means dropping Darlin' or Don't Worry Baby.

I would love an intimate Party-like short set within the concert, just to highlight the boy's harmonies.

It is very important that they keep whatever setlist they choose in all the reunion shows. I wouldn' t understand if they played 50 songs in UK at selected venues, and then turned in a "Meat & Potatoes" kind of show in other countries, being all "Reunion" shows.

I'd be irked at that too...but I have a feeling they'll give the UK fans better treatment over the US fans.  They might not change the entire setlist but I wouldn't be surprised if they added a few more deeper cuts specifically for them--maybe even a fuller SMiLE set.  Mike and Bruce seem to enjoy giving the UK fans more attention since they're "more respected" there, and I'm getting tired of the preferential treatment.

Not at a reunion concert where just about everyone in attendance wants to hear the songs that made them famous; the hits. It is possible they could do something similar to the 1993 tour, but I highly doubt it.

If they do something remotely similar to the song selection on Live at the Roxy, I'll be satisfied.

It is very important that they keep whatever setlist they choose in all the reunion shows. I wouldn' t understand if they played 50 songs in UK at selected venues, and then turned in a "Meat & Potatoes" kind of show in other countries, being all "Reunion" shows.

Mike and Bruce seem to enjoy giving the UK fans more attention since they're "more respected" there

Brian as well.
I guess it depends on what kind of venue they'll play. They are gonna do some of the deeper cuts at venues with good accoustics.

I'm expecting a typical show but I hope that some other songs are included like:

Friends
Wake The World
All I Wanna Do
Surf's Up
Time To Get Alone
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
Til I Die
Marcella
All This Is That
