Title: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: b.dfzo on March 22, 2006, 07:30:30 PM I love this version. Is that Daryl D. on the bass? http://youtube.com/watch?v=8nUIbh-z8dI&search=Brian%20Wilson

Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Aegir on March 22, 2006, 08:07:19 PM I actually started laughing the first time I saw this.
Mike's "I have my jacket on but I'm not really wearing it so I look cool and laid back" thing doesn't help either. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Daniel S. on March 22, 2006, 08:48:53 PM That was so fodaing cool! No one can deny that the Beach Boys look their coolest in the early 70's. It hurts that within 4 years they went right back to dork city and started cranking out the oldies.
It's too bad the Beach Boys don't have....uh, what's the word?...oh yeah, INTEGRITY. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Daniel S. on March 22, 2006, 08:51:53 PM Ever since I saw a snippet of this clip on the Endless Harmony doc, I've wanted to see the whole performance. I thought they did a bang up job. Someone needs to put out a dvd with ALL of the Beach Boys tv appearances.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Rerun on March 23, 2006, 04:36:04 AM Man, that was amazing. I never knew that they performed that song live. God bless the Internet.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: harveyw on March 23, 2006, 05:20:56 AM Does a video recording of the band performing Vegetables & Falling In Love/Lady on the David Frost show circa 70-71 exist anywhere? I have an audio, but have long wondered if any video is extant. Anyone seen it?

Hey gang,I know Carl was playing his Epiphone 12.But was was Al playing? Was that a Gibson ES-355? Great video. Is Mike the "Marlboro Man"?? LOL Brian Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Mitchell on March 23, 2006, 05:31:00 AM Groovy, man.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 23, 2006, 05:45:06 AM Here's another cool video from a little later on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNe5j_HW9D4&search=brian%20wilson I don't think I've ever seen the band look cooler. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Mitchell on March 23, 2006, 06:05:48 AM Mike's outfit is pretty funky in that one.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 23, 2006, 06:11:07 AM I like Al's toque phase. Blondie's sweater-vest is pretty outrageous too. And I'm not convinced that Carl's pants match his shirt.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: b.dfzo on March 23, 2006, 06:23:12 AM Now, to go way off the timeline, for a bit of comparitive analysis, here is "In My Room" with live vocals. Check out the matching suits. And the string arrangement!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ71ZUueNMQ&search=%20The%20Beach%20Boys And here is a totally live "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ_TZIeTxFY&search=%20The%20Beach%20Boys Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Mitchell on March 23, 2006, 06:33:03 AM I love that rendition of When I Grow Up.
EDIT: Al looks the coolest, with his t-shirt underneath the striped shirt. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: c-man on March 23, 2006, 06:37:10 AM On the "Cool, Cool Water" clip, the band is rounded out by Ed Carter on bass, Daryl Dragon on piano and Moog, Dennis Dragon on percussion, plus their horn section is there.
An informed source tells me this is probably not early 1971, but rather late 1970. They did this song live well into early 1972, when Blondie & Ricky were in the band. EDIT: Al looks the coolest, with his t-shirt underneath the striped shirt. That's the Ready Steady Go show in London in 1964. I've had this on video for many years - absolutely wonderful rockin' performance of a great song. They also do I Get Around. In the interval between songs the presenter, Keith Fordyce, jokingly refers to Dennis as 'Ringo' and the group look a little disconcerted by it! Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Mitchell on March 23, 2006, 06:53:07 AM I think someone posted the I Get Around clip from youtube a while ago.

I thought When I Grow Up came out on the Today! album in 1965. I think the Brits had more taste and were a lot more hip in mid 60's. The Beach Boys don't look like dorks in the English appearances. Makes you realize the opportunities missed as a result of the Beach Boys image and marketing not handled appropriately. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 23, 2006, 09:04:32 AM Quote I thought When I Grow Up came out on the Today! album in 1965. It did. Sneak preview. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Mitchell on March 23, 2006, 09:13:07 AM It was a single in 1964. It went to Number 1 in Canada (how's that for good taste?). Today! is kind of a hodge-podge like that.
When I Grow Up/She Knows Me Too Well (Capitol 5245/17 August 1964) US: 9; UK: 27 Dance, Dance, Dance/The Warmth Of The Sun (Capitol 5306/26 October 1964) US: 8; UK: 24 Do You Wanna Dance/Please Let Me Wonder (Capitol 5372/8 February 1965) US: 12 Today! came out on Mar 8, 1965, so 5 of the tracks were already on singles. http://youtube.com/watch?v=U9tRB_diS8s&search=beach%20boys If this is the public perception of a Beach Boys fan.. why are people like us grouped in with people like them? Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Daniel S. on March 23, 2006, 10:51:37 PM I'd do them.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Aegir on March 23, 2006, 11:25:28 PM I'd do them too, but there'd be no love behind it, and then I'd feel real bad the next morning.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Bicyclerider on March 24, 2006, 02:25:25 PM The Mess of Help video - live vocals over a backing track, right? Didn't see a banjo or fiddle but could hear them - and the track faded, a sure sign it wasn't live. Or were the vocals prerecorded too?
The Cool Cool Water clip looked all live to me. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: b.dfzo on March 24, 2006, 02:31:59 PM I like the Cool Cool Water clip for the fact that it's all live. And it's more listenable than the album track, since it sounds shoddily cobbled in comparison to the YouTube clip.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Rerun on March 24, 2006, 05:49:50 PM I'd do them. As long as you leave the one on the left for me. Don't spoil the goods. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Daniel S. on March 24, 2006, 06:31:24 PM No problem. But I go first! >:D
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 24, 2006, 06:44:42 PM Quote The Mess of Help video - live vocals over a backing track, right? It sounds like maybe some of the backing vocals are prerecorded too, but Carl's lead seems to be live at least. Too bad that it's mostly a mime, but either way, it's such a cool look at the band. I love Al's Fender XII and toque. Blondie's Gibson bass is pretty rad too, and Carl's non-bigsby tailpiece Tele is interesting as well. Fun to see Daryl too. Good times all around, I guess. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Jon Stebbins on March 25, 2006, 08:53:17 AM I think Alan Boyd told me that the master for the Forever-Lady-Vegetables episode of David Frost doesn't exist anymore...it got destroyed somehow. Too bad, I have the audio, and some stills. Maybe some tech from the show made a copy way back when, and its in a closet somewhere.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: NimrodsSon on March 25, 2006, 09:49:50 AM It's interesting, on that Mess of Help video, it looks like Dennis is playing (well, pretending to play) a Baldwin organ of some sort, but it's definitely not the same Baldwin of Brian's used c.1967-1971.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 25, 2006, 09:57:02 AM I think it and the piano must have been supplied by the show they were shooting for. I guess Old Grey Whistle Test?
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Jon Stebbins on March 25, 2006, 12:38:22 PM Yes its definitely Old Grey Whistle Test...I have this video with the intro by the host.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 25, 2006, 12:47:59 PM Did they just do the one number? And didn't OGWT usually feature live, ie not mimed, performances? Surely that lineup could have handled it? Maybe I'm just idealistic.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Aegir on March 25, 2006, 12:53:57 PM I don't see what's so incomphrensible that Dennis is actually playing the organ.. seems like he's only playing one or two chords, anyone can do that.
Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 25, 2006, 01:22:44 PM Quote I don't see what's so incomphrensible that Dennis is actually playing the organ.. seems like he's only playing one or two chords, anyone can do that. It's incomprehensible because they're miming the track, it's prerecorded, thus the organ isn't even on. I think we all know that Dennis was plenty capable of playing keyboards. Title: Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 Post by: Jon Stebbins on March 25, 2006, 05:29:44 PM Aeijtzsche...As far as I know that was the only song they did during that OGWT appearance. And yeah outiside of Carl's microphone being "live" I can't imagine why they mimed to the track...although I have seen OGWT performances by other artists that had the pre-recorded track w/live vocal set up. Speaking of that particular lineup...There is a tape in existence of an entire BB's set recorded live at Winterland in '73 on the house audio/video system. I know who has a copy, and I have no idea whether it will ever be seen publically. But I'd imagine there are similar discoveries out there that we'll enjoy in the future.
