Title: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Ron on December 15, 2011, 08:54:05 AM I just looked, and this year they're inducting the Small Faces. I know nothing of these guys, and they may deserve to be inducted, but it's amazing to me how the hall has been around for what, over 20 years now, and yet some great artists haven't been inducted yet.
Chubby Checker. Are you kidding me? Chubby Checker doesn't deserve to be in the hall of fame? What in the hell are they waiting for? Neil Sedaka. How the hell is it alright that they make a big effort to get Clyde McPhatter in TWICE, but can't get Neil Sedaka in once? The Chubby Checker one rises to the level of disgusting. The only explanation is that whoever's involved has a personal problem with him, his significance to Rock & Roll isn't even debatable. It's been 20 years! Sometimes they get it SO right, I think Hank Ballard was one of the first inductees. That's awesome. The Chubby Checker thing though is SO wrong. It's getting pretty bad for Neil Sedaka too, he's easily forgotten I guess. This guy was fantastic and one of the best early pop singer songwriters. Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Alex on December 16, 2011, 06:26:19 AM The Small Faces were a late 60s British rock band, biggest hit was Itchyoo Park, became simply the Faces when guitarist and singer Steve Mariott was replaced by ROD STEWART and RONNIE WOOD!
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Ron on December 16, 2011, 10:54:46 PM That's cool, I'm sure they should be inducted.... but are they, and the 600 different members of the hall more deserving than Chubby Checker?
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on December 16, 2011, 11:15:07 PM How about Roxy Music? Hell, Eno by himself should be in, at least before Steely Dan or John Mellencamp.
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Ron on December 16, 2011, 11:49:05 PM I've never heard of Roxy Music and dont' know anything about Eno or Steely Dan, and don't like John Mellencamp. I do like chubby checker, though. I just can't get my mind around 600 inductees being more worthy than the Chubster. I mean maybe 50. Hell maybe 100. Maybe lets stretch it and 200. But 600 people before Chubby Checker? He wasn't even a 1 hit wonder! He had easily one of the biggest Rock hits of all time, and on top of that he was like 15 when he started and is *THE* guy that represents the 50's dance craze stuff. The twist, the fly, the pony, slow twistin', all the stuff he did with DeeDee Sharp, the Limbo! I mean come the hell on.
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Jay on December 17, 2011, 12:15:19 AM I bet there are a ton of early 1950's Doo Wop groups that aren't in, and should be in. I know that it's the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame, but there are a lot of genre's from the 1940's and early 1950's that contributed to what we now call Rock and Roll. Take Big Jo Turner for example. He did the first version of "Shake Rattle & Roll". His version was more of a "Big Band" sound, but "Shake Rattle & Roll" has become a classic Rock and Roll song. I'm still amazed that Three Dog Night hasn't been inducted. They were technically more popular than The Beatles. *ducking diwn, waiting for the rocks to be thrown*
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Ron on December 17, 2011, 12:22:05 AM I'm with you on Three Dog Night. Definately have earned a spot. Has Big Jo Turner not been inducted? Him, and that song, were right there at the beginning, Bill Haley's band kind of bridged that gap with that song.
I know it's all subjective, but it just makes me scratch my head. Three Dog Night had hits in the 70's, so that's been 35 years or so, Chubby Checker had hits out almost 55 years ago. You'd think they'd want to induct him before he dies, there honestly may be some animosity or something towards him keeping him out. To have a guy that was such a big part of the 50's when Rock was in it's inception not be in the hall is a glaring oversight. Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Jay on December 17, 2011, 12:26:33 AM I'm not sure about Big Joe Turner, but I was just using him as an example. Actually it was just the first thing that came to mind. ;D Big Mama Thorton is another one. She recorded the original Hound Dog popularized by Elvis. She also did the original Ball and Chain, which sort of became Janis Joplin's "signature" song.
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: roll plymouth rock on December 17, 2011, 03:00:20 AM The Monkees should be in there too!
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Ron on December 17, 2011, 06:57:59 AM HOLD THE FIN HORSES!!!
The Monkees aren't in there either? What the hell? *POSSIBLY* as big of an oversight as Chubby's downright opression. Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Chocolate Shake Man on December 17, 2011, 08:16:38 AM That's cool, I'm sure they should be inducted.... but are they, and the 600 different members of the hall more deserving than Chubby Checker? I would say yes in the case of The Small Faces. But that's subjective. To be honest, I'm not sure why you would bring up another band. Why not just ask, Why isn't Chubby Checker in the Hall of Fame? That question makes more sense and is ultimately more productive than Shouldn't Chubby Checker be in the Hall of Fame before The Small Faces? Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: GuyO on December 17, 2011, 08:40:31 AM Smokey Robinson and The Miracles.
Smokey is in there already as a solo artist. The other members who were essential to their success, co-arranging and writing with Smokey, deserve being inducted. They are Warren Moore, Bobby Rogers, Claudette Robinson and the late Ronnie White and Marv Tarplin. And what about David Marks and Bruce Johnston? I mean, when Metallica were inducted it was the current four and three previous members (Burton, Newsted and Mustaine)? The Temptations included the classic five plus Dennis Edwards. Chubby Checker though is a really early guy who was really big. Even kids know who he is and he hasn't had a hit in 50 years. Nobody alive hasn't heard the twist. It's just a major oversight, imho. At least some of the other guys we can say "well they've only been around 30 years" or whatever.
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: hypehat on December 18, 2011, 08:30:03 AM Who gives a flying one? It's a elitist, redundant organisation that values the idea of 'rock' (which, depending on who you ask, is dead in the water) rather than actual forward thinking musical thought and dialogue. It's an excuse for the industry to go out of an evening. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: vintagemusic on December 18, 2011, 10:01:10 PM Well people want to be in the Hall of Fame just like they want
to win a grammy. Some of the lists of people who won grammys over the losers, curls your toes when you read about the genius's who lost or didin't get nominated versus some of the terrible people who won. The Hall is cut from the same cloth apparently, a popularity contest or whatever it is. I can just imagine, oh gee, we don't have many grunge acts, lets put about ten of those in, hey lets put some rap artists in there to remain current. I realize to some extent it's subjective. However it's supposed to be I assume, A combination of. sales, popularity, being a pioneer of new sounds or styles, and just a truly great artist or band. In some cases that kind of criteria seems to have vanished, and deserving people are left out, while truly mediocre one dimensional people get in. Makes no sense, runs contrary to the whole idea, that the Hall is the place for the greatest of the great,. After some of the early obvious choices get in, in the first few years, it becomes some kind of bidding war or attempt to keep money rolling in by appealing to a certain demographic or something. There should be a defined criteria of some kind. Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: runnersdialzero on December 20, 2011, 11:03:23 PM I don't understand why folks even care about something that continues to be a laughing-stock shitshow year after year. Johnny Rotten and Ozzy Osbourne nailed it in their response letters.
Title: Re: Artists the Rock & Roll hall of fame dissed Post by: Jason on December 21, 2011, 01:10:24 PM I liken the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Jann Wenner's "Now Playing" playlist on his iPod.
