I'm going to run out of Spiritualized albums soon. - Spiritualized - Pure Phase 1994 - See above. Good god, I don't think I actually own any music from this year. Oh wait. I do. The Grays album. We'll have that. 1993 - Jellyfish - Spilt Milk. 1992 - The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray (I ACTUALLY FORGOT ABOUT THIS AND I'M GOING TO LISTEN TO IT RIGHT NOW COS IT'S GREAT) 1991 - Primal Scream - Screamadelica's alright, I suppose. 1990 - Sod it, Jellyfish - Bellybutton. Most of the nineties really goshdarn sucked. Sure, there are a lot of repeating bands, but if the music's good, the music's good. Oh and Sam, come on, fugettaboutit, the 90's were incredible in terms of music! Title: Re: Your favourite album a year for each year you are alive list Post by: hypehat on March 08, 2012, 10:33:43 AM I'll bite,
The first music I was cognisant of was A Christmas Gift To You from Phil Spector, I think? I remember my mum telling me it was 'the wall of sound' and I had some vision of a wall in the middle of a christmassy scene. Like THAT makes sense ::) Although apparently as a very young child I hated music :lol My memory of my early years is a little vague, sorry. so 1990 - 1995 or so - The Phil Spector xmas album 1996 - Started vibing a little bit to what my dad was listening to and The Beatles. If Firestarter by The Prodigy came out then, I remember freaking the eff out to it on TOTP when it hit no. 1. 1997 - Discovered radio, I think. And I know I definitely bought The Spice Girls album (I was 6!). Remember hating Oasis a lot for some reason. I think I was very into pop. When I was clearing out my house not so long ago, I just remember finding a lot of NOW! albums. And not remembering any of the songs on them :lol 1998 - Probably the same as above. I think my dad was secretly despairing. I was not a cool kid ;D Reading the Wiki entry on pop in 1998, a few things are popping up in the old cortex. I can't remember anything specific. Apart from Aqua's Barbie Girl. Which was EVERYWHERE. I remember seeing Godzilla at the cinema and loving the soundtrack to that. I think I also remember hating The Verve and the Manics on TOTP. Sometime during these 'lost years' I do remember watching the Monkees. 1999 - Fatboy Slim, my dad listened to the Shania Twain album constantly, so that, S Club 7 (look, it was school ok?) and tonnes of pop on the radio and TOTP. That's all us kids care about, really? I used to watch TOTP every friday, I miss that program. I remember being shocked when someone told me they lipsynced :lol 2000 - Once more, pop. I think my dad started to try and educate me about his music tastes as well - remember him lending me a Parliament album and being very confused ;D I think i hated rock music - I remember seeing Pyramid Song by Radiohead on TOTP and hating it immensely. I think I was mostly listening to the crappy commercial dance music on the charts. 2001 - Again, more of the same. I still don't think I owned an album that wasn't a compilation. I remember George Harrison dying without really knowing who he was or why my mum was upset about it. And EMINEM, OH sh*t. Bloody rinsed the Eminem show all the time, think it was my brothers. 2002- Here, we have the first big album I remember loving - A fucking Ministry of Sound compilation :lol On the plus side, late in the year I was slowly getting into the more rockier stuff on TOTP - I remember loving Grace by Supergrass a lot. I think I also accidentally tuned into John Peel a couple of times in the last year or so, but it confused me a little. I liked him a lot as a DJ. 2003 - Seven Nation Army (both album and song) by The White Stripes changed the game for me. I remember buying the album at the airport and falling asleep listening to it over and over on a flight to greece. at, ooh, twelve years old I suddenly became very interested in rock music, listened to the beatles albums my mum foisted on me and started buying the NME - the first one I bought had Dave Grohl on the cover. I started to listen to Steve Lamacq on Radio 1, but still not John Peel really - he was on a bit late and he still played stuff I didn't understand. Big mistake.... 2004 - Luckily, I'd got into indie at the time it was having a real upswing in terms of popularity. Or so the NME had me believe. Franz Ferdinand did A LOT for me. I must have played that album to death. Razorlight. Maximo Park. Think Bloc Party were the year after. Scissor Sisters. All the indie records you can imagine from that year, I had. Also, saw my first gig - The Zutons supported by The Futureheads. Man, I loved the Futureheads - I saw them again for my birthday a couple of months later in some tiny venue. 2005 - The second gamechanger. I heard Pet Sounds, Sgt. Peppers and BWPS (the latter for my birthday that year), and saw Brian live. Which I fucking loved. I still bought whatever the NME told me to, though. Sufjan Steven's Illinoise was probably what I listened to most. 2006 - I think, and I don't know how - must have heard it on the radio - I got into Spiritualized this year, and saw them at a tiny venue which was so emotionally powerful I think I cried. So, Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating In Space. Also, the debut Arctic Monkeys album pretty much dominated the entirety of my life that year and the next. Someone mocks me for listening to Cat Power cos she's a girl and I start thinking I need to get the hell out of Dodge 2007 - More pop, I think. I was a slave to the NME as usual for a 16 year old. Nothing really strikes me from this year - think my discovery of drinking and sex the previous year took precedent over listening to the radio for the most part ;D I was probably listening to tonnes of Spiritualized, and Oasis, The Clash, Joy Division... canon rock with my friends which we listened to whilst getting into trouble. And the Ramones. 2008 - I remember buying a new Spiritualized album (which seems like only yesterday!),and getting into the Flaming Lips and Richard Hawley. I think over these years I'm discovering classic sh*t like The VU and The Stooges, but nothing too relevatory. I think my Beach Boys obsession takes to new heights - I become that guy. I also stop reading the NME after one Noel Gallagher cover too many. 2009 - I go to university in South London and so listen to a lot of shitty R&B, dubstep, and whatever going out all the time. I learn to like jazz a bit, country, and pick up more amazing old records and not much new stuff. Don't remember what stands out.... 2010 - you think I'd remember. I crate dig a lot. Get a record player, continue my forays in the older music. Think I played NEU! a lot. I just hoovered up tonnes of music, and obviously Beach Boys. 2011 - Again, the variety approach to listening to music - My favourite find was Todd Rundgren or Gram Parsons, I think. Whoa, massive post. I find it hard to boil it down/make sense of it, my memory is pretty poor. ;D Title: Re: Your favourite album a year for each year you are alive list Post by: Puggal on March 13, 2012, 10:37:12 PM Unfortunately, most of the music I enjoy was released well before I was born.
