Title: How many times have you bought Pet Sounds? (Or other BB albums?)
Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on December 03, 2011, 11:20:24 PM
Evolving from a question in teh Noel Gallagher thread, how many times have people bought one beach boys album? I say Pet Sounds, as that is where the Question originated from  and it seems the most likely.

Me?:
2x Original Mono LP (Sold one to a friend)
1x Cassette
1x Original CD
1x Sessions Box
1X 1999 Stereo LP
1x Reel To Reel

That makes 7.

I also have 8 Best Of The Beach Boys LP's and a Reel To Reel of it.

I can't measure up to you guys in terms of sheer numbers. That said, I must be the only person anywhere who has trodden on Pet Sounds while it was playing. To put your minds at rest, the record player was standing on the floor at the time and it was an accident. This was in 1972. I bought a replacement (on CD) 32 years later. So I've had two copies of Pet Sounds. :=)

Oops! Forgot the Pet Sounds Sessions box set (as yet untrodden on).

I've only bought Pet Sounds - three times: mono CD, mono/stereo CD, PSS CD - hopefully will get it on vinyl when and if I get a vinyl-player.

The only others are The Christmas Album a couple of times in different configurations and Stars and Stripes twice (don't ask).

EDIT: And also Live at Knebworth twice.

Pet Sounds is 4 - original CD, Pet Sounds sessions box, 2006 Vinyl, 1972 pressing with CATP.

For some of the others, it's a case of having bought the CDs then searching for them on vinyl. So I own three copies of CATP (have it on single vinyl and cd as well as 1972) and two copies of Today, Surf's Up, 20/20, Holland, Love You, BW88, BWPS....

I first bought 'Pet Sounds' new, aged about 14 on a budget EMI pressing in about 1980 for £2.99. Traded it then a year or so later for a decent original 1966 mono pressing. My friend got the Japanese CD (unavailable anywhere else) in about 1988 to my great jealousy. I got the UK CD in 1990, when it appeared (it was very keenly anticipated here).

Sold the vinyl.

Got the box set in 1996. And sadly I can say I've not heard the mono mix since, in fact I feel the need to re-aquant myself with it again. I LOVE that stereo mix, it's so fitting and stunningly beautiful.

You have to be a certain age to really 'get' Pet Sounds. I was about 22 before it really hit me during a short lived relationship with a beautiful, but out-of-my-league lady.

Most of the albums I've just had on original vinyl (I had a mock-stereo UK 'Smiley Smile') and then straight to the twofers, which were revelatory when they came out in 1990.

Nawwww, this one needs an explanation!

*Sigh* Unfortunately it's not a good one, just a matter of swapping the 2008 reissue for the 2002 reissue whilst in search of the original 1996 digipak. The only difference is the packaging and it's slight at that. I'm scum.

Naw. If I had any money, I'd have bought it, too. For someone with no money, it's only the essentials :( I haven't even bothered to listen to it, really. The guys' last vocal performances together, but backing fucking Toby Keith. Bawww.

I've bought every single regular U.S. release of Pet Sounds in ALL formats (stereo/mono) and a couple of vinyl/CD versions from the UK.

Now what?  Is there a boobie prize?  (0)(0)

Let's see....
1 original mono vinyl
1 Duophonic vinyl
1 vinyl w/Carl & the Passions
1 1980s Capitol re-issue vinyl (green label) - my first copy of Pet Sounds
1 1999 vinyl
2 1990 CD (one mine, one my husband's)
2 PS box sets (again, one for each of us...we got these before our relationship began!)
1 mono/stereo CD
1 DCC gold CD
1 DVD-A
1 fuzzy green remaster

And one copy of just the cover of the original mono issue, framed and hanging in our living room

BTW, we visited the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago, when they had a Beach Boys exhibit.  One of the items was a large tape box containing the east coast master of Pet Sounds.  Even though it was behind glass, I swear it gave off a vibe.  That was such a great exhibit; photography is not allowed in the HoF, so I took copious notes of all of the items on display.

bgas, I did always wonder about your collection. How do you store it? How many items? And so forth, I don't mean to seem crude  :)

Well....  Next to my computer desk, I have a bookshelf that has my cassettes and reel tapes , where I can pretty much see what I have( in case there's something for sale I want to check) My 45's I pretty much have in 45 cases on a shelf behind me , across the room, tho my non-USA 45s are in the other room( about 300) with:  The LPs are, for the most part, on a set of shelves I built long ago; tho there are duplicates and some that don't fit in boxes near the shelves.  In this room I also have the 4 & 8 track tapes , playtapes, programs, sheet music, memorabilia. CDs, whathaveyou...
 But ya know, this has me thinking I really should re-arrange so that everything is in my main room here near me, where I could enjoy them more easily; but that's going to be ALOT( hey mikie) of work.
Think I'll work on that. Thanxx for the inspiration!

As far as how many items...  I'm guessing:
 about 1300 LPs ;
150 8-Tracks;
30-40 4-tracks;
60-70 Reels;
35-40 Playtapes;
maybe 250 cassettes;
maybe 1000 45s;
all of the above include label/pressing variations and such, and some duplications.
As far as 45 's I probably have a small collection. I know some people that collect label variations and non US that must have multiple thousnds of 45s;

In order of acquisition;
1 Pet Sounds/Smiley Smile vinyl twofer
3 (and counting) The Fabulous Beach Boys (Pet Sounds rebadged on Music For Pleasure! label, it's everywhere)
1 Pet Sounds CD (1st run)
1 rerelease CD with the mono/stereo line-up
1 PS Sesh Box
1 1966 US Mono vinyl
1 stereo/mono vinyl
Another PS rerelease CD with the mono/stereo line-up
The Fuzz CD - I wasn't gonna do it, but Mr AGD or one of his peers wrote a timely blog about repeat purchases that "spoke to me" and my wallet hand

I would argue that ownership of the GV box constitutes another copy (comon',8 of 13 tracks)

12 Copies.  And I hardly listen to it!  :P

Although when I do, I go mono mix - I think there's a greater sense of urgency to the proceedings

As for the other BB product, all on vinyl ('cept SC and SIP), SU on Stateside, Warner and Caribou vinyl, all on original twofer, all on 24 bit (thank god for that end of bin discount cd joint)

POB on Caribou vinyl original, Loco duluxo release CD and blue vinyl

Hi Newbie here - My Pet Sounds obsession started when I bought my first copy of the album in 1966 and it's still going strong.

I've got the following Pet Sounds LPs

PS UK Mono
PS UK Stereo

PS US Mono
PS US Duophonic
PS US Stereo

PS South African
PS New Zealand
PS Yugoslavian
PS Turkish
PS German
PS Taiwanese (Red Vinyl)
PS Taiwanese (Orange Vinyl)
PS Dutch (Beach Boys Story Vol 3)

PS Japanese Red Vinyl
PS Japanese Promo
PS Japanese Mono
PS Japanese Stereo

PS & Smiley Smile (Double LP)
PS & Carl & the Passions (Double LP)
PS & Carl & the Passions Promo (Double LP)

PS Later Capitol Reissue
PS Warners Brown Cover Reissue
PS Fame Reissue
PS World Record Club version

PS Capitol Vaults
PS 40th Anniversary (Mono & Stereo)
PS 180+ Analogue Pressing
PS EMI 100 Collection
PS Simply Vinyl

PS UK stereo with signed cover (all except Bruce!)
PS Brother Ltd Edition Framed Gold LP & Cover

I've also got far too many CDs, Tapes, Cassettes, Minidiscs, Bootlegs, Sessions, setlists, DVDs, books, tee shirts etc etc etc.  The most unique thing I have is a handmade light box with the Pet Sounds cover on the front - it's like a lead window but is made with some form of acrylic paintwork.

I've not counted the duplicates of which there aren't too many except I do have 2 Jugoslavian copies for some reason.  My favorite LP is all of them but I love the alternative lyrics included in one of the Taiwanese versions.

When I tell people about this small collection sometimes they ask me if the 'foreign' versions are in English or native tongue and it's interesting to see how long I can have them on! It's probably when I say the NZ version is sung in New Zealand English and the SA version is sung in Africaans that they catch on.

Best Pet Sounds Memory - It's tough cos it's either seeing Brian and his band at the Hollywood Bowl in 2000 where my wife and I also met Tony Asher or the last night at the RFH in 2002 which really was a stunning night and probably was the band's best ever performance (imo!).

Nice list, T2458 !

Pet Sounds: "only", 22 LP's, 3 cd's + Pet Sounds Box and 1 8-track

when T2458 mentioned "South African", I suddenly remembered that instead of just one I have 3 different pressing (including an 80ies reissue)

thus: "only" 24 LP's etc etc...   :)
