Title: Beach Boys restaurant to open in Vegas
Post by: Justin on December 02, 2011, 09:41:27 AM
Don't think I saw it posted anywhere...

http://www.vegasinc.com/news/2011/dec/02/beach-boys-restaurant-open-vegas/

The Beach Boys are joining a growing wave of musicians opening restaurants in Las Vegas.

The iconic California band is pairing with Caesars Entertainment and the Monsoon Group to open the Beach Boys Good Vibration Restaurant at Bally’s. The establishment is expected to debut in summer 2012, the year of the Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary.

Operations Manager Nick Raymond said Las Vegas will be the restaurant’s first location, but investors hope to expand it worldwide.

“People say, ‘Wow, the Beach Boys, that’s 50 years ago,’” Raymond said. “But we’re bringing in a new cutting edge. It’s more like surf fusion. It’s not like we’re going to play ‘Good Vibrations’ every five minutes. It’s going to be about what’s happening in Huntington Beach, Hawaii, Australia, South Africa. It’s about cars, surf, women, the lifestyle.”

Raymond said the casual-dining restaurant will feature a diverse menu and bar with affordable prices.

If it opens as planned, the restaurant will be the latest in a string of musician-owned eateries. Jimmy Buffett started the trend with Margaritaville in the Flamingo. B.B. King, Sammy Hagar, Toby Keith and Vince Neil soon followed. Most recently, Kiss announced plans for a themed coffeehouse, and Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ and Beer opened Thursday at Excalibur.

I hear the menu's not that sensational:

Quote

A big buttered popcorn and an extra large coke
A few chili dogs and man I'm goin' broke

...and the customers ain't very well-heeled either.

Proposed Menu items:

"The Brian Wilson":  Two birthday cakes.
"The Jardine":  A Low-acid and sugar free treat to keep the dentist away.

"The Tower":  A big stack of pancakes with a little pointy ornament on top that resembles the Capitol tower.

"The Radiant Radish":  A Radish.

This was covered back in the summer http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10796.msg201792.html#msg201792 (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10796.msg201792.html#msg201792)

But it's fun to see an update!

I'll name a sandwich and try to guess which band member's name will be attached to it, like they do at the Stage Deli:

Ham, American cheese, on white bread...

A can of Reddi-Whip on every table

Cyclamates, juicy steaks, sweet things too

"The Bugged at My Old Man dieter's special": breadcrumbs and a little glass of water

Desert is a copy of Penthouse, served with a milkshake and a carton of cigarettes. Bathrobes are acceptable dining wear.

Too bad I won't be done with culinary school by the time it's open it would be awesome to work there. Or maybe it'd be hell.

Were there not plans for a chain of Brian Wilson restaurants at one time, just in the past few years?  I vaguely recall plans to open a Brian Wilson restaurant in the Orange County or LA area, with a few locations to follow after that.  It don't remember what the name was supposed to be, though.  I assume it never happened.

Right, I was gonna mention that.  Brian Wilson's Surfin' Beach Party Restaurant. it was to be at the totally dire "GardenWalk" development in Anaheim, across from Disneyland.  It was supposed to be the flagship location for a proposed chain but the whole thing seems to have fallen through.  Not to play into tired stereotypes, but it's just such a Mike Love idea, it was weird seeing it attached to Brian.

Some of their breakfast selections look promising "Time To Get A Scone" (with extra butter) sounds pretty good.

Weren't there  some Mike Love restauarants proposed at one time? I seem to remember something, but can't remember ever seeing anything about them actually opening.

With all of the failures of celebrity-driven restaurant chains, I'm not surprised the Mike or Brian themed restaurants never happened.

The way I understand it is a group of people or a single entrepreneur promises huge returns on investments from celebrities in return for not much more than use of their name, image, and a few public appearances at wing eating contests or ribbon-cuttings. The investors sing the praises of their plan (We'll hang surfboards, Pendleton shirts, and guitars on the walls, and your music will play all day!), how it can't fail because it's a "radical new concept" in theme restaurants, and the places 9 times out of 10 have mediocre bar food and the schtick wears thin in a year, then the place folds and the investment is lost. But the initial entrepreneurs make some money from naive celebrities, they then lay low after the doors close, then find another celebrity to woo with promises of making big returns for doing nothing.

Club Kokomo? Maybe Mike was hanging around Sammy Hagar too long...Sammy's Cabo Wabo stuff got old in a hurry. :)

Really?  I couldn't find anything like that( maybe I need to go back to search school)
I saw lots of references to opening "Mike Love's Club Kokomo" soon, in Orange CA, and even a notice that John Stamos had played the opening night, but nothing I'd call solid evidence.  Got links?

I so totally will! On opening night of course. The wife and I love to check out different restaurants and this one spikes up our curiosity level several notches (or nachos).

Around 20 years ago there were a couple of official Beach Boys restaurants in Southern California.  My recollection is that they were called The Beach Boys Cafe.  I think the first one was in Hermosa Beach.  The second was right on the beach in San Diego, but it closed before I got around to checking it out.

You mean "before I round round, get around, I got around, to checking it out" ?

I really like Cheeseburger in Paradise because of its beachyness, and I don't even like Jimmy Buffet's music that much, so I welcome a Beach Boys restaurant. But they got it wrong in the press release, it's not "cars, surf, women", it's "cars, surf, girls[".
