Title: SMiLE on 8-Track

Yes, a buddy of mine has actually recorded SMiLE off to 8-track.  I'm afraid to listen to it, since my player ate the last one cartridge I tried - but yeah!

Who's up for making the cassette and minidisc versions?

Someone should go for the ultimate obscure music format and make it a digital compact cassette.

I remember years ago when I was in high school, the only copy of Pacific Ocean Blue I was able to find was an 8-track tape, years and years after they were no longer in use. I had picked up a receiver with an 8-track deck built in. I enjoyed listening to it, until the player ate the tape!

Does anybody remember 2 track cartridges?  They were around at the same time as 8 tracks (as well as 4 track tapes and tape players) but were a smaller format with a much smaller cartridge and narrower tape.  They also had about half the number of tracks.  The tapes were more like EP's than LP's.  I think the only reason they created them was for portable players.  But since cassettes were around at the same time, it didn't make much sense for a looped cartridge player with similar-sized tape that could only hold half as many tracks as a cassette or 8 track, so the format didn't stick around as long as either.  I had a family member who had one that only had one tape (the Marvelettes) that they got in a trade, but never could find any other tapes in that format.  Not a good trade.

That 8 track looks cool.  I didn't even know they made 8 track recorders.

Oh, thanks for that.  I do remember the one tape being called Playtape, but this was long before the EBay era, and they weren't sold anywhere anymore.  I think the player and tape we had were both thrown out.   The tapes didn't have much artwork on them like the 8 and 4 tracks, which had full cover art in miniature.

That was his inspiration!  I sent your image to him, and that started the ball rolling.

Not sure, but I can check with him.

Sure. Both formats would require complete shipping containers for just the one set, though.

Don't give them ideas guys… I'm already committed to shelling out for a new turntable to play this year's output.  S'been expensive so far in 2011 -  great bang for your buck but I'm running out of buck!

Edit: How are the tracks split across the tape?

Be afraid... I hear it is being transferred to clay tablets as we speak.

It's not a straight run of TSS, so the tracklisting goes thusly:

Program 1: Our Prayer, Gee, Heroes And Villains, Do You Like Worms, I'm In Great Shape

Program 2: Barnyard, My Only Sunshine, Cabin Essence, Wonderful, Look

Program 3: CIFOTM, Surf's Up, Holidays

Program 4: Vega-Tables, Love to Say DaDa, Good Vibrations

Sounds Good, very 8-Track to have it out of order, but Fire has gone! I never really liked it anyway. However, Windchimes Should have stayed. Ah well, its all good fun.

Hip-pocket records!

Wire-recorder reels!

More back-of-the-box cereal flexis!

Edison cylinders!

Say-it-Play-It tape cartridges!

Hip Clips! (That's partially already happened, with the 1-minute GV cutdown...)

Reel-to-reel tapes!

35mm mag stock!!!

And all versions must come with a real surfboard, of course. No, wait, that is way too workmanlike, with a real Woodie car, an exact replica from the Surfin' Safari album sleeve!

I would buy an exact replica of the car on the cover of Surfin' Safari if it were reasonably priced, even if it came bundled with Smile 8-track tapes.

I want Brian's mustang from the LP back cover of Pet Sounds.

I won't be happy until I get TSS on those heavy brightly-colored plastic records that are only playable on the Fisher-Price record player.

And it would have to come with a stuffed life-sized replica of Banana or Louie (your choice).  Or the goat from the Pet Sounds cover.

Maybe you'd be happy with one of the Racing Champion cars?

I've already started a parody of the Edison cylinder Smile sessions!  Then I found a 1971 Kenner cylinder toy jukebox that might work as well.

The card says HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the front, atop a picture of a train.
You open the card. The chorus to "Cabinessence" plays.
It says on the left: "Who ran the iron horse? Your dad. Into your mom. Happy birthday."
On the right side, there's a picture of Van Dyke in the '70s, with the biggest mustache they could find. He's smiling.
Mike Love is meditating on the back of the card with his early '70s appearance.
