I think it was an illusion created by the beard. Brian was f*ckin' handsome like this, I'll say. The later Landy era with the thin/clean shave/short hair/vacant expression just didn't work nearly as well as the thin/bearded/long hair/vacant expression look of the late 70s. The former was unsettling, the latter just felt like Brian looking fairly healthy for the first time since... ever? Maybe a week or so in 62 or 63?
