Title: Most Prized Possesion...
Post by: Slow In Brain on November 18, 2011, 04:37:23 PM
...apart from the Smile Box.

All these posts about best things and worst things got me thinking about the prized things.

Mine is a signed copy of the Little Saint Nick 45, the cousins on one side and Al Jardines signature on the flip.

A great friend who was a dj. Forgot all about the term "test pressing"-sounds good to hear again. OK Eric, you're gonna like this one alot- A huge SU poster signed on the back by Myke-To Sherry, Mike Love. Sherry was my date for about 4 years.

My mom supposedly has one of her high school yearbooks signed by Dennis!

She went to Inglewood High but had lots of friends over at Hawthorne!

Next time I'm up for a visit, I'll make her dig it out and snap a picture!

Roadie I was talking to took it backstage and had it signed. I did not specify Myke, but that's how it came back. I had a poster that they all signed back in 68 or 69-the cat got stuck in the attic and made the poster his catbox and did a huge plop on it. It cleaned up ok but I can't seem to find it anywhere. ::)

Not to be picky( for accuracy instead) Is your copy the white label Promo, with the song titles printed on the label, or the blank white label test pressing, Nothing printed on the labels( as were 99% of all test pressings) ?

My god, that's all amazing!

I don't have anything 'special', but I lost the ticket of the first time I saw BW (and what pretty much cemented my fandom) and I'm very sad about that.

I have Today, Summer Days, and Pet Sounds signed by Brian. Of those, I cherish Summer Days the most, because Brian's handwritting is much more legible on that one. Accompanying autograph - a photo of me and the man himself. I reckon the photo is THE most prized possession. Its a highlight of my life and a moment I won't even forget.

That Lucky Old Sun tour program, signed by Brian, Darian, Scott, Jeff, Paul, Brett and Probyn.

Some of my old Breakaway with Brian Wilson newsletters, and the signed photo of BW and the poodle he sent to everyone in the fan club in 96 or 97.

And some of the e-mail I exchanged with Van Dyke over the years.

For me, it is also the memories.    I don't have anything physical that is especial, really, but plenty of cool memories:

Dining with the Jardines, Boyd, Linett, and Campo at the Ivy.
Swinging by Brian's house by myself...

Memories like that are possessions I will cherish.  Perhaps I digress from the point of the thread.

Memory/Thrill: Going up to Bellagio in the late 70's, meeting Brian out by the pool,  he shook my hand and I gave him a birthday card.
Playing an honest to goodness Smile 10"reel in a publisher's office and hearing the hitherto unheard (at least for non-insiders) version
                       of Wonderful (early 80's).
Former prized possesions: Surfin' Down The Swanee River Pic Sleeves,  fully autographed CATP, Kenny & The Cadets single, Bob & Sheri single, Large Capitol Records Beach Boys cardboard retail display piece (from ca. early '64).

Honorable mention for Possesion/Memory/Thrill:  Two KYA ticket stubs from The Beatles at Candlestick, Aug. '66, 2nd row, behind third base dugout. I still have 'em.

I'd love to see pics of all these priceless items. You guys got some cool sh!t...

I don't have much in the way of rarities but when Brian played Jones Beach with Paul Simon, he came out and signed autographs after his set. I stood in line twice and got him to sign the Fairy Tale sleeve, and then a Pet Sounds scan with one noticeable change:

that ranks up there with my greatest Brian memories, as well as the first show of his tour in Ann Arbor '99, Pet Sounds live in New Hampshire, getting a front row seat to SMiLE at the last minute in Melbourne, FL and the Roxy show in '02 where they played the best setlist EVER:

1) An original SMiLE booklet -- which I was able to show to Frank Homes in person, who verified its authenticity.  Remember that Mikie?   :)
2) An original Hawthorne High School "El Molino" yearbook from 1960 - Brian and Al's senior year.  It belonged to Dennis' friend Louie Marotta (who's referenced in the song "Chug-A-Lug" -- "Louie's lookin' out the rear window"), and was sold to me by his family after he passed away.  And best of all, it's autographed by a 15 year-old Dennis!
3) Acetates of "Rabbit's Foot", "Slip on Through" alternate mix (it says on the label "Murry & Carl's 3rd Mix"), "San Miguel" in-process dub, "Please Let Me Wonder" with an alternate vocal fade, "The Lord's Prayer" first take with no overdubs (with label written in Brian's handwriting), "Cabin Essence", and several more.
4) An entire box of cassette tapes and CD-R's sent to me over the years by the late great Rev. Bob Hanes, all annotated in his handwriting.  I miss him.

Lee

Ok, what the heck is the story behind that Brian and Marilyn block?

As for me, the only things I have are a flyer for a 1971-ish concert, a ticket for an August 1992 concert, and some promo Brian cd singles from his first solo album. One of them is a promotional interview cd.   The flyer doesn't have the year on it, so I don't know much about it. I've been meaning to quiz Andrew G Doe or somebody on it. I also have a cd single of "Forever" credited to "John Stamos, featuring The Beach Boys".  >:(  ::)

Well i have many items signed mainly by Brian/Mike/Bruce and David  , but my 2 favourite items have to be the 'Hawthorne' CD Sleeve signed by Brian/Mike/Bruce/David/Ricky and Glen Campbell , AND Possibly the best memory and artifacts is going to California in 2002 and doing the Carl Wilson Foundation Walk and getting onto the famous Bus Tour ( thats a long story in itself ) which included going to Brians house in Mulholland and being served ( $50 for Charity ) 'Wilsons Best Lemonade' in a gorgeous hard plastic tumbler ( with CWF  printed on it ) signed by Brian , and a group photo of the tour participants outside Brians house again signed by Brian......

I'm very new to Beach Boys collecting but I can boast two signed BWPS and PS sleeves from Brian's RFH concerts this year. To have met the man himself to get them was utterly amazing and I still can't believe I have such a treasure from the genius that started the Beach Boys decades before I was even born! I also have great memories from the gig and of Mike's pointing/interacting with me at the Epsom gig in July. I am very happy that I attended both these concerts.

*checks date, stares blankly, drinks more coffee*

August 27th 1966, Marilyn & Brian were still living on Laurel Way. They moved to 10452 in April next year.  :)

This unique piece of history:

Videotaping this beautiful Brian moment, with hardly anyone else around:

and my program from Carnegie Hall, September 24, 1971 (still looking for it, but its here somewhere...)

There has to be a market for these… :D

Limited, but I think the vendor could pretty much name their own price. Mind, you'd need a sturdy floor.

Exactly… I'll make 'em if you supply some dates.

We could do a SMiLE Sessions commemoration breeze block in 2021.

O, better, backdated BWPS RFH Breezeblocks, dated 2004.

We could market them as being genuine souvenirs from the walls of the RFH; we can even point them out to buyers in Phil's backstage footage – "Look there's yours, just before Darian gouged it out of the wall and Brian engraved it…"

Hot cakes, hot cakes…

Thinking about this 'most treasured' thing, I realise that what I truly treasure most isn't something palpable, but rather the act of being one of a small but tightly-knit band of like minded souls who are, the odd troll, space cadet and general grouch excepted, fine people to know, even when the insults are flying like underwear at a Tom Jones gig. That some seriously good primary research has resulted is just a bonus, and even the crazies here generally know their BB 101. It's cool. It's a good place to be.

If we could just resurrect the original Ego, well, that would be prefect.

Ok, what the heck is the story behind that Brian and Marilyn block?

RE-PRINTED FROM PREVIOUS POST:

That stick-signed cement slab, dated 8/27/66, came from Brian and Marilyn's pool at 1448, when the owner at the time (2000) came out of her house and wrote down my license plate number (I was taking photos and she presumed either a Beach Boys fan or a stakeout, or both). We chatted for a bit, and I told her I was on my honeymoon visiting friends in the LA area. She was from Iran and had purchased the house from lawyers, not from Bri-Mar directly, and she was renovating the pool area and had the autographed slab removed and it sat at the side of the house where she led me to look at it. She asked for 1K, and I told her that I was happy to have seen it, but really didn't want it that badly. Long story short, I came back the next day with $500.00 cash and made an offer, and then threw out my back (and my honeymoon) trying to get it into my car trunk with one of her workers.

So now it sits in my living room, with a little piano light on top of it, in homage to 1448 (alas, the wife has moved on...). One could easily imagine Brian and the Posse getting high in the heated pool and SMiLE dreamin'...it overlooks the Valley and the twinkling lights of LA at night, and you could imagine them feeling above the fray and in their own world...What was unexpected, however, was how really accessible it was, right on the cul-de-sac, directly on the street, you could have walked right to the door in 1966 and stepped into the sandbox. One could imagine (see Lewis Shiner's GLIMPSES for a dramatization) that this was a happy home for a time for the young couple and Banana and Louie, full of creativity and promise. Seemed oddly normal and (upscale, yes, but not yet Bel-Air) suburban, not that hard to imagine the leap from growing up in Hawthorne. The more secluded and gated Edgar Rice Burroughs mansion on Bellagio seems to have eventually brought out the Kane in Brian, much more of a solipsistic lair, one imagines...

...I could mindscreen Van driving up, or Jules bringing over Thomas Pynchon, or David Anderle talking Brother and big dreams, or Mark Volman driving over on Sunset from Laurel Canyon to play spoons, etc. You can see where the slab comes from in the somewhat awkward home movie/promo films shot at the pool.

4) An entire box of cassette tapes and CD-R's sent to me over the years by the late great Rev. Bob Hanes, all annotated in his handwriting.  I miss him.

Lee

That has got to be one HUGE box! Mine is crate-sized.
And, yeah, it's hard to imagine someone that is missed as much. OR did as much for so many of us.

I like to think of AGD as the Uncle Toby of our family.

Really it is the memories and connections with the band and others in the communicty.

Right now, what stands out, is greg larson's handwritten return address from an old letter.  I put it in the SMiLE Sessions book on the page where he is remembered.  There it will stay.

Other "treasures" are things like the old BBFUN newsletters and fanclub memorabilia.  On occasions when I pull these things out and dust them  off I have to smile.
