He doesn't dimmish Kokomo yet he gives some (obvious) perspective. There are songs that sold less but are more important. I don't hate Mike Love, but in the 60s (and beyond) he seemed to place greater value on dollars while Brian placed greater value on art. This isn't to say that Mike didn't appreciate the artistic merits of what Brian (and he) was doing, or that Brian didn't care about money. But it does seem that Mike was more money focused and Brian more art focused. FWIW, I don't have a real problem with the basic idea of commercializing/monetizing music. I dislike dumbing it down and dumbing it down does seem to have a high correlation to commercializing/monetizing it, but it doesn't have to be the case, as The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and others, have proven. mps |
